  1. I honestly don't think every game series needs to be constant innovations. I mean, I like Dragon Quest (though I will say the skill system from VIII, and the whole organization of game flow IX was innovative while keeping the core of the game the same.) I think Persona 4 was really good because it basically just took Persona 3's mechanics and polished the hell out of them.

But while Squeenix has games of both types, DQ games that harken back to the older style of rpgs, and FF which constantly does innovate (some of which I consider good, some of which I consider bad, but that is how it goes), Nintendo really, for the most part has... Mario, Zelda, Metroid. Other than the transition from 2d to 3d, there has been not a lot of innovation in any of these series. And even though I enjoy Animal Crossing, they have made the same game so many times. So. Many. Times.

Nintendo almost entirely trades on the "you can always come back to us, we'll still be the same" feeling, and while their games can be fun... they lack the excitement that a new idea has.
  2. Anyways, I think Nintendo's biggest problem is they have fallen into a mire of the same-ol-same-ol. They don't really do much except appeal to young kids and old people these days, which is cool. They gotta start somewhere, right? I started with Nintendo, and now I use a PC and on occasion a sony console.

I think Final Fantasy XIII for me was a little underwhelming. But everything after 9 was just...Meh. to Me. I know lots of people love the series, and I love that fact. I remember when nobody had heard of FF (until 7), now it's a household name. There is just something about FF 10+ that doesn't have the same appeal TO ME. I will still play them, but I don't get worked up about them like I once did.

Edit: Lol, Touchfuzzy, that's a good summary. And entirely true. I haven't played animal crossing, but it did look fun. Seriously though: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_Kart#List_of_Mario_Kart_games <--one good example of the "Over, and Over, and Over..." But hey! The graphics improve! Right? right?

There's certainly a strong argument to be made for Nintendo sticking to their guns time and time again, and it's proper fun to debate. What I love about them is their mass appeal. I wouldn't just say kids and old people either. I'm 22 and I have the same passion for Nintendo now that I did when I was younger. Their games just appeal to me. More than the average person? Yeah, probably. But Nintendo's where I started and I've thus far had no reason to turn my back on them. Their commitment to quality always amazes me.
  4. @Sailerius and awesomerhys - I say we just agree to disagree and move on. We're both very set in our opinions and wont sway each other either way through arguments.

I have to agree though that it would be nice to see Nintendo try something new. When was the last time they made a game that wasn't a rehash of an old property?

I mean, Animal Crossing is probably the newest of their properties, and it started on the Gamecube 13 years ago.

I think the newest IP was technically Pikmin. Still came around the same time as Animal crossing though.
  5. Ehh, I'm not trying to sway anyone. Their opinion is their's to own and that's completely fine. Just when it's justified so poorly it can be kinda frustrating.

This is 80% of Nintendo games and I won't say that they don't do this, because this is true. However, two new recent releases on the system (Bayonetta 2 and Wonderful 101) to me show me that Nintendo is branching out. While they may not be 1st party games, they're at least trying and need to do this to survive.
  7. I don't think that either of those games were made by Nintendo?
  8. Oh man! I forgot about Bayonetta! I am not trying to rag on Nintendo in any way. That would be like talking ill of my grandfather! No, I am merely saying that Nintendo has their thing, and they will most likely stick to their guns. There is a lot of risk for them to try and get out of their niche at this point, with Sony and Microsoft basically dominating the market, but NOT really having a whole lot of options that are family friendly, fun, and well polished. Add to that the fact that Nintendo is banking on the Kid-friendly aspect, and they would probably lose a lot of support if they published an M rated title every couple of months. I love Nintendo as well, though the last system of theirs I had purchased was a game cube...3 years ago (Eternal Darkness, man! I had to!)

I personally don't play a lot of consoles these days. I prefer PC for many reasons, (not the least of which is Mods...I don't see any mod communities on PS3/4 making full game overhauls...)

Neither of those games were made by Nintendo. Don't attribute Platinum Games's talent to them.
LOL, nobody's saying Nintendo made those games. But they did publish them. And without Nintendo's backing those games wouldn't even exist. I guess it must hurt you that one of the best developers in the world have two exclusives on a Nintendo console though, right? Ouch!

Why do you care so much?
  11. I believe that Nintendo innovates too little. Sure, the Wii was interesting, but the novelty goes away after a short while. Meanwhile, the Wii U is just a Wii that sounds like a police car when you say it's name (WII U, WII U, WII U, WII U), while the 3DS is just a DS with an extra D, and the DS was just a fancier Game Boy.

Microsoft innovates too much, too fast. The Kinect tries to be this huge thing but ends up falling apart when you realize it's like a Wii but without a controller.

Sony innovates with just enough small changes to make it interesting, while keeping enough the same to let people know "Hey, this is a Playstation! See, look!"

Of course, Sony could do with a better naming department. I'll be 80 and the Playstation 17 will be what all the cool kids are buying, while the XBox -64 and the Nintendo Us are duking it out with brand new Nintendo Smell-o-vision and the Microsoft Rest, where instead of YOU being the controller, some guy in Mumbai is!

You should probably take a step away from the computer, calm down, and contemplate your life, because it's pretty unhealthy to get so emotional about some stranger on the internet's opinion of some faceless, soulless corporation that you have no stake in.

Platinum Games's games are not examples of Nintendo doing new things and branching out because they didn't make them.

Nintendo's actual first party games continue to rot in stagnance.
Oh no, I'm perfectly calm. It just struck me as kind of odd that you would return to the convo at that point, when someone simply mentioned that there were Platinum developed games on a Nintendo console.

I said they weren't first party games.

But he's right. No one is saying the Wii U has nothing new, they are saying NINTENDO creates nothing new. Paying for something new to be made, is not the same as creating something new.

And its not like DXHR with Squeenix, where while yes, it was Eidos, Squeenix owns Eidos. Or like with Pokemon and Gamefreak/The Pokemon Company, where Nintendo owns the majority of the shares anyway.

I never said they were the same. Just pointing out that their statement was needless. Obviously Nintendo didn't make those games. But they have strong ties to Platinum from games like Viewtiful Joe, Okami & Okamiden, Madworld B2 and W101.

Nintendo doesn't make a lot (if not any) new intellectual properties anymore. However, I still bought a Wii U because I wanted to play a lot of the games they were making. Smash included (BTW. I believe this game is being developed through a 3rd party as well). What I was talking about before was that Nintendo was doing a good thing having Platinum develop for their system. Sorry if that confused anyone, I tried to be as clear as possible.
  17. Can we add "Destiny" to this list?  So many people are currently cherishing the game and I can't honestly see it as anything more than a steaming turd with all its really half-assed features and stupid design decisions that no user of RPG Maker would ever even make!

This. Destiny is simply awful. I've never seen such an over-budgeted, overhyped lie be lapped up this willingly. It's not an MMO like they claim it to be, and it's not even a solid FPS. The story could have been better written by a pre-schooler, the loot system is utterly broken and the PvP, while probably the best part of the game, is nothing more than a reskin of Call of Duty with added one-hit-kill superpowers.
  19. I've not played it, but the comparison I hear is that its a soulless FPS Phantasy Star Online that got rid of everything that made PSO good.
  20. They're not "added one hit kill superpowers".  They're called "Killstreaks".  They're reskinned and retooled Killstreaks.  Yeah... PvP is a CoD clone with reskinned everything.
