Double post but new thing, needs a lot of outlines, based it over the FES stuff to try and find something Im happy with. Still not there yet

and if it needs little legs too.
I think it would look good with them

Your second image - do you use those colours in the early stages as a sort of default that then gets eliminated? The reason I ask is that I find the combination of the particular shades of orange, yellow and skin tone a bit jarring.

I dropped pretty much all the colours from the sprite. Trying to get a general feel of the image, but a lot of it, looking back, I dont like.

Trying more of the Fes style, I'm getting there. Going to have to Greyscale shade and then saturate so I get the same effects with different colours.
Top image is odd because it's got to be two styles of Hat or Longer hair.
  5. Been a while since I did a graphics WIP post here! :kaoluv: Anyway, WHEW. Sometimes doin' tilesets an unholy load a work! :kaoswt: Did some forest tiles:

    alice_woods.png
I tried to make 'em so they're seamless wid each other, so that makes the corner tiles kinda weird, BUT it allows me to make diagonal parts and curves and all the fun stuff! :wub Whaddya think? Workin' wid a slightly modded NES palette
  6. I made some diagonal walls!:kaoluv: Done curved walls before, but not diagonal. Dunno why. Diagonal MUCH EASIER and looks cool anyway  Gonna use in Slaybuster, altho it isn't really crammed wid indoor areas.

It looks good! I like the color and consistency.

But I know the struggle. Making forest tiles loop seamlessly (without straight edges) is a real headache.
This is my attempt. For now it's... serviceable, but probably needs some adjustment.

  8. @karusomine looking nice! I like the kind of French comics ligne claire style presentation, really airy and fresh! :kaoluv: I'd mebbe look into makin' the trunks feel more substantial, maybe try 'n set them closer together? Oooor it cud be that the foliage looks a mite underwhelming compared to the trees, but I dunno if you can do anything wid that? :kaoswt:
  9. @alice_gristle Your style is so nice, I love the details in the diagonal walls. The purple tree trunks seem odd to me, did you try the trees with brown trunks and purple leaves? Though with a limited palette it could end up looking even odder than your current version.

@karusomine That's a good attempt! The empty spaces between trunks makes it seem like those areas aren't as dense as you probably want. What if you had a tree in the center instead of the two behind the front trees? And this is more of a personal preference, but I'd switch the pure black inside the treetops for a dark green to keep the lush forest vibes.
  10. @hiddenone awww thanks! :kaothx: Yeah the colours were just somethin' I threw together! I'm doin' this set for my game, Slaybuster, and yes, the palette is gonna be limited, but I haven't tested many variations yet. Right now I just want the design outta the way, Imma work out the best colours as I plan what each stage is gonna look like. :kaoswt:
  11. @hiddenone @alice_gristle Wow, thank you for the suggestions! I tried to apply them as much as I can, and it looks much better.

The only problem is if I have a trunk in the middle, it doesn't loop at the inner(?) corner(?) edge. Like it got cut in half (see the red arrow).
    cropped.png

This is why it's giving me headache xD But I will keep trying to find a way somehow.
  12. @karusomine What if you cheated it with some A5 tiles that you use for those spots? It's a bit more work when mapping, but would look great in the long run.
  13. @hiddenone This is perfect. Also really nice trick for mapping in general. Thanks again! ^^

  14. Tryina figure out what kind of floor tiles I want for my indoor areas...:kaoswt: Whipped up a quick mockup with four different floor styles. I'm currently most into the first one, which is just flat grey, with "contrast tiles" thrown in to kinda fool the eye into believing it's a tiled floor in poor repair or summat...

The other variations are more like what I usually do, with uniform looking flagstones, in three sizes. If I used one of these, I wud also throw in some broken tiles etc. (Also not sayin' I can't use several of these styles in the game.)

    Thoughts y'all?

    Four variations

    alice_floor4.png
  15. I like the first one! Easy on the eyes and you can add all kinds of variations to the floor.
  16. @StrawberryFlower I think so too! I kinda like the large flagstones (second pic), but even they are kinda busy and noisy. Dunno, might use them in a couple of rooms tho? :kaoswt:
  17. I agree, the first one works well. The largest tiles also is nice, would be good for a temple-ish room.
  18. Okay, spammin' my tiles like a crazy Home Depot sales dude, but one more, then Imma shut up, promise!:kaoswt: Here's walls from the fortress of the final boss:

    alice_walls.png

So, I had the bright idea of makin' the walls into these honkin' big stone slabs, and then I realised, "I've gone down the rabbit hole of makin' diagonal walls, I'm gonna look like a clown if I don't make diagonal walls for the final boss fortress too!":kaophew: At first I wuz sure I had condemned myself to A HUNDRED YEARS OF SUFFERIN' but then I'm like, wow, they din't turn out too bad?:kaoswt2: Or... AM I WRONG?

And yes, 'cuz of tile economy and stuff, proportions and perspective may be a li'l off, but, eh!
  19. Sometimes I feel like I'm livin' in this here thread  Anyway, HOW 'BOUT SLEEPING IN AN ABANDONED HUT?

    alice_night_scene.png

Done somethin' I never thought I'd be doin' - firelight effects by hand. :kaoswt: First time, so go easy on me, I only have so much clue 'bout what I'm doing! Imma make the finished product animate a bit, but not sure how much. At least the fire dancin' in the hearth.

That looks so warm in a chilling atmosphere!
Perfect choice of colour for the firelight on the objects.
