I think it's great! The melody is very addicting. This is the kind of music I like in video games. Very melodic and singable. Can go on forever (hey, it has to loop!) and not get boring. I don't really know too much about music theory either. What I learned was from noticing the trends in what I was hearing.

Hey guys, Im back to see if I can get some more opinions. I have been working (slowly) on a concept album about the aftermath of an Atomic Bomb and a how mankind will always overcome and prevail, even in the darkest of times. The first track essentially is the dropping and devastation of the bomb itself, meant to be a very epic piece to try and capture the sheer awe of this weapon. The second track takes you into the destruction left after the first track, nothing but a desolate wasteland of what was once a place people called home. The third track brings you in as we meet our main character, a survivor of the bomb. He is trying to piece together what happened and regain himself so that he can help look for more survivors. Towards the later part of the song, you get to hear him finding more survivors, bringing a new ray of hope to this dark time.
So what I want is maybe someone to give the three tracks I have done so far and let me know if the story I told above is coming through in the music or not. I want to make sure a story is being told through the music itself.

In total, the three tracks together come out to be 10 minutes and 43 seconds. I am mainly just looking for opinions. -
The story is definitely coming through the music. The first track especially, even without being told the background, that's the type of imagery I get from the piece. The small details in the first movement are great, such as starting and ending with the wind and bells. The second movement also does a great job of creating the imagery. I like that drum bit that starts toward the end. The third movement. When the ensemble comes in, that's great though. Adds some needed variation. That would really be my biggest criticism is that most of the melodies get repetitive. But, the imagery is definitely coming across.
I have a couple more.
This one is not a genre I typically write and still in uber rough draft mode. https://soundcloud.com/maireadgamemusic/theme-the-friend-i-need-but-do
And viola, some forest music https://soundcloud.com/maireadgamemusic/forest-of-meitia-tip-toes-for -
Phew! Haven't posted in here for quite some time! But that's what being involved in all of these contests and other stuff in real life makes one do, I suppose~
The motif for this little tune was brainstormed in like...2011? 2012? Can't remember, but it started out as a project in Finale, and, due to the program's habit of constantly crashing on me, was completed in FL Studio. A real shame, too, as I'm quite fond of the piano sound of the Garritan instruments in Finale. Ah well. Ah, and I didn't fully master this one. Need to work on it more to get the piano sounding more realistic...
In any case, I hope you all enjoy this one. I need to get more active in making new stuff...or actually FINISHING old stuff! XD
Piano Wizard -
@Ms Littlefish: I like both of those pieces. The titles are interesting and creative as well. "Forest of Meitia" is particularly calming. The instruments and sounds you used blend quite well together.
@Clydous: That's a really good piano composition. I like that break in the middle where things go calm. You tied the transitions going into and leading out of it very well. It was a pleasure to listen to! -
Clydous: Love it. It's so hectic and frantic, like someone's chasing me. The first part anyway. It's like a piece of classical music it is!
Ms Littlefish - I love the Friends one, it's probably my favorite of yours so far!
hyde9318 - That was a surreal experience! The first two remind me a bit of Pink Floyd a bit...
Okey dokey, here's my newest. The piano is my bane because I can't write for it very well.... but I tried with this one and I love the result.
The song came to me the other night.

Wow... that is an amazing honor to be compared to them... thank you, you just made my day.hyde9318 - That was a surreal experience! The first two remind me a bit of Pink Floyd a bit...

Thanks for the commentary, guys. Sincerely appreciated! =D
@Iron Croc: I REALLY wish you had better samples cause I know Luca's Theme would sound that much more amazing with them. I am quite fond of the chord progression starting at 0:37. The added flute from 0:50 - 1:01 seals the deal for me. It is lovely. The first 14 seconds remind me of "Let It Go" from Disney's Frozen...I will say I'm not too fond of "Let It Go" or that movie, in general, but it works well in Luca's Theme. Excellent work! -
I'm in the same boat about the samples. Iron Croc, since I know that you're using Finale, you could probably use the samples I do. It can be a little tricky to understand the set up at first, but the sounds I use are free and you can still write the file inside Finale (I've used Finale for 8 years now and don't want to learn any other notation software!).
If you're interested, what I did was download a freeware called LMMS. It's a lot like FL Studio. I export a .midi file from Finale and open it in LMMS. In there you can apply what is called an .sf2 (quite literally sound fonts) to the midi tracks. You can also apply any VSTs you have to the tracks. DSK do a lot of decent free VSTs. I get my soundfonts from sf2midi.com. You have to sift through them as a lot of them are garbage but there are a lot of great free samples on that website and there are reviews to help you save some time and pick out the good ones. I use a giant mix and match of .sf2 files. -

Been inspired by old ps1 tunnel shooters hah -
Clydous and Ms Littlfish: Hey, I do too. So no hard feelings there.
The sample was the regular FL Keys in FL Studio. I'll check out the SF2Midi website, definitely.
Why, I may even render it (the word for processing.. I know... weird) again with me playing the flute live versus a canned flute at the end.... I may do that for all my VG Songs.
I'm glad you like the theme because a LOT of emotion was poured into it. -
This is just a little something for my game's Game Over screen.

@West Mains, that's some pretty interesting stuff. I'll have to admit that that particular genre isn't my thing, but it sounds pretty darn well put together! I like the first song you showed, it reminds me of a busy city in like, the year 8000 or something. :D
-
Loving how active this thread is getting again!
@West Mains. I was really liking the pieces on your channel. I've never been a big shooter person but I do enjoy ambient sorts of music. Sometimes the sound effects get a bit abrasive but I do have very sensitive ears.
@Cyreides I love your samples! What are you using? I also listened to your world map music. It sounds so serene.
Ok, so this is my very, very first attempt at writing battle music. It was torture from start to finish. Not my forte! I'm proud of the final product but I feel like it still needs torn apart and refined, ha! https://soundcloud.com/maireadgamemusic/battle-against-a-common-enemy
I posted this a long, long time go but it is much cleaned up. A character theme. https://soundcloud.com/maireadgamemusic/irials-theme-there-is-always -
reFX Nexus and Orchestral for everything but drums, and for that I'm using various things from Vengeance Essential packs and some of the default drums that come with Fl Studio. And thank you.@Cyreides I love your samples! What are you using? I also listened to your world map music. It sounds so serene.
I tried working on battle music myself just yesterday. Did not get very far with it and did not like making it at all...Ok, so this is my very, very first attempt at writing battle music. I probably had 80 rejects of starting measures before I finally landed on what I did.
-
Wow, that's a lot. I don't put anywhere near that much time and effort into my music. I always rush things and a lot of the time it ends up compromising the quality of my work lol
-
I wish I could not put a lot of time and effort into making music...and I don't mean to brag by saying that at all. I'm just INCREDIBLY picky about making music, and it takes me a LOOOONG time before I'm actually satisfied with something enough to actually pursue its continuation. A blessing and a curse, I'm sure. D:<
-
This is something I made to have my own short little Victory Music, but I don't think it'll fit the feel of my game. Not sure what to do with it now.

@Cyreides
The beginning of the fan fare is great. I think it gets a bit too loud after that though. Really blew my hair back.
Hmm, ok. This is another theme. More of the antagonist persuasion. https://soundcloud.com/maireadgamemusic/craids-theme-smells-like-a-dog
