  1. Yeah, I think the synth parts are overpowered in places.

I agree. I've been messing with the trumpets for days. I think a lot of it has to do with the pitch. It's quite high in the range. I think I can even afford to take it down a whole octave. I also keep messing with the panning, have changed the key of song five times. It has always been the trumpet part rubbing me the wrong way. I like the energy it gives but the pitch keeps being a problem. I'll mess with the rhythm section in the chorus as well. The character is a complete head case so I want some chaos, but I think I can find a little more synergy there, still. We appear to be on the same page. I'm classically trained which is why this song is pulling me so far out of my comfort. I don't really know my way around a drum kit at all. Or a bass...or a guitar... Anyway, I hope to have another update for this song up. I'm quite fond of the melody and the character so I'm trying to get it perfect.
  2. Yeah, we have totally different backgrounds: I picked up everything I know from the streets.  And, by the streets, I mean in college I bought a guitar and spent an unhealthy amount of time practicing alone in my room.

As a fellow guitarist, I salute you my friend.
  4. Haven't posted in a while. A lot of stuff has been going on, much of which isn't too good, but ah well. Such is life.

Last completed piece of last year. Full organ. Hooray.

  5. I do like me some organ. The piece reminds me a little of "Power Hungry Fool" from Fire Emblem Path of Raidance when the rhythm picks up (though that's a harpsichord in that song). It's a very fitting piece. I really like the dissonance later. Very small CC, I think there is too much reverb. That could just be my poor, rattling ears though.

I'm still working on a few hiccups in this one (mostly dynamics and mixing). But, it's another character theme (trying to get all those out of the way). https://soundcloud.com/maireadgamemusic/rainas-theme-effortless-at

And I touched up a theme from earlier though I probably created as many new problems as what I fixed. I think the trumpet is a lot less abrasive (though probably not). https://soundcloud.com/maireadgamemusic/whynns-theme-with-fists
  6. The dynamics in that first song are producing a really, really lovely effect.  I would lower the high volumes a smidge, though, if it doesn't affect the piece's impact too much.  The second song sounds a lot better, but, yeah, the trumpets are still a little abrasive at times (primarily in that first section)--definitely not as bad as before, though.
  7. @Ms Littlefish: Indeed, organs are lovely. I have the reverb setting for that piece set for within a Cathedral background, so maybe that's why? I suppose I do not hear it, though.

The motif and melody for Raina's theme are lovely. Gorgeous, even. You have many good musical ideas. I would agree with Housekeeping, though, and reduce the higher volumes just a bit, especially with how soft and delicate the rest of the piece surrounding it sounds. Also, I'm wondering if there's anything you can do about the issue you mentioned earlier with the sudden leaps in volume from some of your samples. I'll try thinking of something for you.

Whynn's theme sounds fair. I do have to mention, however, that I was disturbed by the area of 0:28 to 0:33. Again, only CC, and not to sound rude, but for lack of a better word, that segment sounds quite weak in comparison to the rest of the song. I'm not suggesting to increase the volume there, but it just seems empty somehow? Once 0:34 resumes the melody, though, it sounds full again. I like the motif for this one, as well, and the time signature changes are noticeable and give it character.

@Housekeeping: Listened to "New Applications of Quantum Mechanics." Sounds action-packed and full of gusto. Listening in from 0:12 to 0:35, however, the samples used kind of sound off-key? This seems especially prevalent during the segments of late 0:20 to 0:23 and late 0:32 to 0:35. If that's the sound you're going for, then disregard this. It may just be my own silliness preferring the notes to begin with E & C and work their way up from there instead of #G & #C. Also some food for thought, the main theme happening during 0:36 to 0:59 sounds great, but to repeat it four times without any altercations makes it lose some of its feeling of importance. The first two times are fine, but on the next two, I would suggest maybe tossing in a few high strings or another underlying melody to emphasize that whatever's going on, it's a really big deal, and whoever's listening in should most certainly be aware of it.

It's not rude! I'm trying to get help. :28 to :33 is my least favorite part of the song so it's all for the picking. I'll go back  and mess around more. I feel as though the melody is fine but the accompany there is confused. I have a couple ideas of what is just...wrong...there and how to improve it. Whynn's Theme is hands down one of the most difficult songs I've tried writing. Most things I can churn out the rough draft in a couple hours but the draft of this song took three days alone. The time signature changes were natural when I originally started humming the idea of this song to myself and translating that to actual music has given me many challenges. I really want to clean that bridge up because I agree it is the weak spot.

I'll also touch up the volumes on Raina's Theme. I already put a "patch" up earlier but I think I can take it down a little more and not lose anything. I'm still struggling to find out what is causing that volume jump! It doesn't do it in Finale. I'm running out of ideas. It's apparent in many of my songs and this one it's just plain distracting because of how soft the piece is.
  9. Here's one that I made in September of 2012. I really need to get uploading more of these older tracks. Like ASAP. It's nice to see how far one has come or the difference that just a few months/years can make towards one's art/music/literature. XD

  10. Sounds good. It reminds me of so many awesome games on the SNES. It'd fit right in with them. Nice work. Very interesting title too.

Thanks!  Snes is probably the system I identify with the most in terms of composition; music tended to be more pop-influenced in that era instead of orchestral being the go-to sound.  I want to write music with that era in mind but still polish it up and make it modern and more complex.  I also take a perverse joy in coming up with titles, haha.
  12. That's awesome. Some of the greatest soundtracks (in my opinion) have come from the SNES and lead into the first Playstation era. I definitely think a lot of your stuff I've heard would fit right in there. Coming up with good titles is a weak point of mine. I could definitely take a lesson from you! Keep it up. I look forward to hearing more.

  15. Heyo.

I'm a bassist of 9 years, and I've just started to compose my own songs.

I have some more projects up in FL Studio, but I'm just testing the waters with one for now.

(As an aside, yes; that is my real name.)

Let me know what you think!
  16. Here's one of my favorite songs, it's a remaster of an old song I made to honor a beloved family pet who had departed at the time. It sounds like something out of an RPG, so I started brainstorming.

I know some music theory but I mostly compose and play by ear. Enjoy!  https://soundcloud.com/dlsea/looping-wing-over

It's over 10 minutes long because I looped it before I uploaded it. I love long loops because I like to write to them. :D
