  1. Well, sure. Why not?

Not sure when I started music. But I DO know when I started my Soundcloud (today, lol). Didn't know much of it before, but I'm seeing everyone hosting their stuff on it, so I registered an account today and uploaded a few things. I'll have to go over a bunch of those descriptions later and get into detail with them (I HAD more detailed descriptions on Sheezyart, but it's down for the time-being, so...yeah...).

Anywho, here are a bunch of my own tracks. Listen to them at your own leisure. I need to continue making more new stuff. Most of what's on there is years and YEARS old. I am ashamed (not of the tracks, themselves, but of my laziness in producing new content.). =(

  2. Ah, Ms Littlefish! Hello!

I must say I'm quite curious as to what program you use to make your music. Most of your tracks DO sound as though they come straight from the SNES or GBA. I'm fond of the sound, having grown up during the NES-SNES days of play...

I personally use FL Studio, which seems to have a negative reputation. Invested in Kontakt 5 last year and was not disappointed. I need to get on to releasing more stuff with it. I also use Finale (2011) and have a smashing good time.

Oh! But in regards to your "Inside a Tavern" theme, the melody was pleasant, and, indeed, Irish-sounding. I enjoyed it! =D The sudden increase in volume, admittedly, made me jump up a bit. As some C.C. for you, I'd recommend an easy-going crescendo for those moments when the volume has a leap from something soft (mezzo-piano/piano) to something louder-ish (mezzo-forte/forte). =)
  3. I know the volume jump you're talking about. It wasn't intentional but my midi files have been unpredictable when I feed them through other programs. I know how to fix it though. Thanks, I'll add in the crescendos and decrescendos as well.

I write my music in Finale 2014 and export the midis to LMMS. I have downloaded various sound font packages (sf2) and the one I used for this one was called Live Audiology. I'm torn what sound fonts to use in the final project but I think I might keep these sound fonts because they do in fact sound GBA era which jives well with the graphics of RPG Maker.

    Thanks for the input.
  4. Welp, here's my submission for this week's art challenge. A short and sweet piece of music (that loops a few times)! Think "boss theme." ;D

Originally wasn't going to post it here since it's already there, but I figured what the heck, so I did it anyway. Enjoy~!

  5. I sure wish I had sounds like that! I like the string melody but maybe if you took it up an octave it would have more energy. A lot of the instrumentation are sort of blending together so taking the strings higher (or adding a higher violin part) would help it poke out more. The piece has great energy and rhythm though. Definitely bopping my head.

Whelp. Here's another. It's the item shop music. The music and the character that is the shop keeper has morphed into a huge inside joke between my boyfriend and I. We feel that the music perfectly envisions this NPC. https://soundcloud.com/maireadgamemusic/item-shop-no-really-take
  6. Ah, I tried to use higher octaves on the other set of strings, but for whatever reason, it sounded kind of tinny and overdone. Not a pleasant sound. I actually dropped the octave twice before finding a sound I liked. I think it may be the patches, themselves.

I listened to the shop keeper one a little earlier in the day. XD I could definitely hear it playing in a large marketplace environment. Once again, for C.C., although I'm sure you're already aware of it, just the volume jumps again. From 0:24-0:26, the volume decrescendo'd to the point where I thought the song had faded to an end before I heard some more of it...which prompted me to turn up my volume...which prompted me to jump at the sudden reprise and acceleration of the main theme at 0:34. Looooouud Hahaha

Still, though, quite enjoyable. I'm going to need to look for more of my old stuff and continue working on new stuff! XD
  7. There have been periods of time where I didn't write music for a long time. The thing about "old work" is I'm constantly updating it with every idea I get to expand it or any new software I get to enhance it. Who knows when it will actually be complete, right?

I very much liked this. There was enough going on to keep it interesting, especially for an Item Shop theme~

So I guess I'll post here. Every now and again I'll post something that's not made for my game or for ReStaff.

This is Death, Reaper of Souls, a cinematic sound battle theme, with a few elements of loose jazz towards the end. I was practicing an orchestral cinematic sound here.

And when I'm not making epic RPG music, I'm making slightly more commercial-sounding stuff like my piece Golden Testament.

  9. I like a good meaty brass section. The first song supplies those to me. I like a lot of the small details in this song (like the bells) and I wish I could hear them just a little more. The rhythms are really, really good. Love the atmosphere of this piece.

I'm hearing some Final Fantasy 9 in that.

This was pretty sweet, but I wasn't a big fan of the piano part that starts around 3:45.  I think I would take more liberties with the rhythm (and maybe have the piano playing mostly with that rhythm instead of floating above it).  To me, that'd make the chaos of the piano hit a bit harder instead of feeling detached from the piece.  Or, you might just make the piano part less tonal, even messing with the twelve tone system if you're feeling academic.  Right now, it kind of feels like it's not committing to its own chaos, if that makes any sense.  I do like that little accent halfway through the part where that static noise comes back.

I made this one for the little 2-Day Do Something Challenge over at rpgmaker.net (but really I was just making this anyway).  It's for my current project and is designed to loop, so that's why it might sound like it ends in a weird spot:

  11. The piece is very relaxing. The layers melt together beautifully. I imagine a town setting with this. Or a shop theme. For some CC, I feel like he first part has (I think) just a touch too much echo. This could be the intention though. My ears do tend to rattle when I have head phones on, so it could just be me. When the bass comes in again with the bells though, that's my favorite part because the bells are giving that reverb but the bass remains quite dry.

Ok, so I'm still fudging with the midi on this (midis have been doing weird things in my programs) but overall I'm happy with the direction the piece is going. I apologize for any weird dynamic jumps. Any time I try to do anything slightly complex my files start borking.  https://soundcloud.com/maireadgamemusic/irials-theme-always-the-hard
  12. Yeah, the reverb/phasers are supposed to keep it pretty ethereal--this song is going to appear in an unconventional setting where that will make more sense.  The part with the bells was something I was toying with for a while; I'm glad it turned out good.

If you're having trouble with your program, have you tried using Anvil Studio?  It has a pretty good interface.  When I compose with MIDIs, though, I tend to use Powertab for everything other than drums; I've been playing the guitar for a long time, so Powertab's a bit more natural for me.  I like how you handle rhythm and dynamics with your instrumentation; I tend to draw more from popular music, so I probably rely to heavily on a drum kit and bass line to do the rhythm work.
  13. Thanks, I downloaded Anvil Studio. I'll see what I can do with it. I'm impressed with LMMS (for being free software!) but it's more that I'm still learning how to use many of my programs, I think. Up until recently I've only used Finale. I've updated my tracks a million times because I keep learning how to do new things in my other software. Which is good!

Oh, absolutely agreed. Just always make sure you back up your old ideas on an external. You could potentially lose years worth of work in a single crash. Only an idiot would fail to back-up their stuff!! Haha hah...hah......haahhh....*raises hand in shame*

Nah, really. Keeping track of old work to work on later is a great idea.

I remember the days where external storage was not really a thing yet and I had to email every thing to myself. Those were dark days.
  16. Housekeeping. I think the piece is great. I love the development, the chords, and the rhythms. It keeps my interest throughout the entire piece. I really like the melody. I don't tire of listening to it. I know it's a metal/electronic piece, but I think it's missing some more dynamic contrast. Even if the melodies popped out a little more, I think it would polish it up really well.

I finished a few up in the past couple days. This one is really out of my comfort zone and it' constantly being updated still. I think some new ears would help me further this piece along. https://soundcloud.com/maireadgamemusic/whynns-theme-with-fists
  17. When you refer to the melodies, are you just referring to the synth brass parts?  I think maybe the guitar is overpowering the brass in that one section where they're both playing.  Glad you liked it, though!

As for your piece, I think the brass early on is a bit much.  I'm not sure if it's the pitch or the volume (or both), but it sounds a bit piercing.  When the trumpet calms down in the mix in the second section, it sounds fine, though.  I would at least mess with lowering the pitch/volume in the sections where the brass really stands out, but I'd even consider switching up the instrumentation there; maybe having a piano taking over the lead there with some percussive chords will provide some nice variation.  The little bridge around the 18-20 second mark could be a bit cleaner--maybe a run?  I think the melodic line that starts around the 7 second mark is the best part of the song--it reminds me of something from Wild Arms.  When the chorusy part kicks in around 22 second mark, maybe you can make the rhythm section a bit more driving.  I don't mind the drum pattern there as I assume the wonkiness of it is a reflection of the character based on your description, but I'd toy with lining up the other instrumentation with it so that the rhythm's more pronounced.
