  1. Well, I'm back. Damn, it has been long ago. Around a couple of months, but I've been struggling with my net company. They are so rude.

@jajunk Wow! Both songs sound great. I like the feeling, the style of the sounds. I like the percussion, it makes a good rhythm! :D

@Iron Croc I already heard this on SoundCloud, but it still sounds awesome. I really like your jobs!

@Cyreides Well, I'm not very into this style of music, but I gave it a try, and it sounds like a lot of hard work was put on it! I like the effects you add on the song gradually, they make a good atmoshpere. Just for curiosity, is it progressive trance? I have no idea about that kind of music. But it stills sound great!

And well, there goes one of the songs that will (hopefully) appear in the project Avalon. It's called A Fateful Encounter.

    https://soundcloud.com/aarl/avalon-a-fateful-encounter-alpha-ii

I posted it on my SC months ago, but Ms Littlefish suggested adding some brasses to the theme. I would like to know what do you think about them - I like how they link with the song. Also, I'm not sure how should I pursue this song. Any idea? :3

Oh boy, this forums are full of great musicians. I'll kidnap you all and put you to work on my pieces. Haw, haw, haw. Oknope

    Seeya!

Honestly I have no idea what type of music to call it, I mean it's obviously some kind of edm but what kind I have no idea really. And thanks

EDIT: and it's finally on iTunes :3

Check out an upcoming single by my band. We're planning to drop an EP this year!

EDIT: The embed code seems to have been confused because our song is posted as a private link. Just click here.
I have to say... I'm not really a fan of Death Metal at all, but that was supurb! I love how it reminds me so heavily of Bowser's Castle.

I hope to see you more active here and on the rest of the forums! :D

Thank you! I'll have to listen to the Bowser's Castle song. We have yet to add synth because we're looking for a fitting keyboardist.

PS: No death metal, but perhaps some good old Christian metalcore? ;)
  5. And now for something completely different. I wrote a toccata for my game project, a triumphant remake of my tired and worn IGMC project.

    The Kaiser Kingdom Royal Toccata!
  6. Hey guys!

Here's some music I've composed to my cyberpunk RPG "Ixias - Stellar Complex". They're not entirely polished versions yet, but let me know what you guys think!

    Battle themes:

Shattering the Machinery of Existence https://soundcloud.com/kuunkatve/primordial-rage

As the Curtain of War Falls https://soundcloud.com/kuunkatve/as-the-curtain-of-war-falls-demo-20

    Main theme:

Floating in Interstellar Cosmic Haze https://soundcloud.com/kuunkatve/floating-in-interstellar

    Windenfyr District theme:

The Eastern City and All Its Blessings https://soundcloud.com/kuunkatve/the-eastern-city-and-all-its
  7. @Sinathor

    • "Shattering the Machinery of Existence" I definitely get Cyberpunk out of this. Drums are fantastic.  I have two notes on this one. Work on getting each part nice and clear. The strings you have part way through there absolutely get swallowed by everything else. They need to sing out above everything else when they come in because they are playing the motif that people will associate with the song. My other note, and it's a small thing really, those quarter note cymbal/bass hits at the beginning underneath the choir ahs, I don't think needs to be so long. It's not until :35 seconds that we get to the meat and potatoes of the song and that interlude could be shortened by at least one phrase to get the song going sooner.
    • "As the Curtain of War Falls" Same note about the strings. You could easily take them up an octave and they'd shine out. I love everything else though. The guitars and synthesizers really play well together. I really like the part that plays at :32.
    • "Floating in Interstellar Cosmic Haze" The details in the beginning are great and the crescendo is fantastic. I like how all these parts come in and melt together, but again, it does take an extraordinarily long time for thing to get going. As much as I like more song, when I think about game music you have to be wary of how much time someone may spend listening before mashing the command buttons. It would be a shame if someone didn't/couldn't listen all the way to the part at 4:30 and get into your awesome drums at 5:50 because the scene was over!
    • "The Eastern City and all it's Blessings" I just love your rhythms. I also adore that woody sounding synthesizer.

@ IronCroc It certainly sounds Toccata-y to me but what do I know? This piece has wonderful counterpoint and the chords are beautiful. I don't know a ton about organ but I'd be careful of some of those drone notes hitting too hard and drowning out some of your counterpoint and rhythms. Also, if possible, I'd play with dynamics and tempos more. Just giant, amazing mega-swells of soft to loud and ritardando more into that slower section and accelerate more back into eighth (sixteenth?) notes. It fits the theme, it goes through many motions, good job!

Okay, after my hiatus, it's time for me to slap a leash on my new song and take it for a walk. I've very excited to show this. It's for "The Ironbound Heart."

Thank you so much for the feedback! I've been working on the updated version for Shattering the Machinery of Existence with more (and louder) strings. With also a bit more special climax. The start is long on purpose as it's a battle theme that comes only once, and it'll have dialogue before the actual battle starts :)

I agree with Floating in Interstellar Cosmic Haze being way too long for game music. It wasn't originally supposed to be in the game but since the mood fit my game so well I decided to adopt it there. However, when I use it in-game, I made an edited version so player would definitely hear the climax. But the soundtrack version will obviously be the full 11 minutes.

I listened to your new song and I really like it! From the moment it started, I thought "Crap, I couldn't make stuff like this." :D It's really game music-like and feels very much like a character theme above other kinds of themes.

I'm not sure if my next game will be a sequel to my cyberpunk game, or a fantasy game. I have no trouble with the cyberpunk-y scifi music but I think I may run into problems when I start composing something more fantasy-like. What tools do you use for your works?

I personally use Logic Pro armed with a midi keyboard. Not that much else :p
  9. A friend of a friend got me involved in a project of theirs to make a video game and they wanted some atmospheric music for it. I've never done anything like that really, so I threw this together really quickly as a concept really to see if they like the direction I'm going in with it or not.
  10. Beep beep! Rookie composer coming through. Very, very rookie. I'm just someone who likes to fiddle around with music programs and hopes to someday be able to produce listenable music through sheer effort, practice, and trial and error. I don't even have any music training. I'm almost kind of embarrassed to show these things off because everyone's music just sounds so lovely and mine just screams ROOKIE!, but I figured that they at least started in the right place (...with the exception of the most recent two, which, uh, aren't so great, but they're there for comparison purposes). It's kind of ironic (...and sad) that the tracks from two years ago sound better than the track I made 9 months ago which sounds better that the tracks I made 2-3 months ago. Where did I go wrong?!

Like I say in the song description, I'm pretty sure this was my first ever track (two years old). It's got a nice concept to it, I think, but it lacks a certain nebulous something that could make it that much more powerful. I kind of like it though I find myself scratching my head over how I could have given it that je ne sais quoi to make it come together (as much I can, anyway).

I remembered this song and it was what inspired me to upload my old stuff. It's very basic, yes, but I think it's got a charm to it. I find that the instruments coordinate well to create a soothing, peaceful imagery, even if everything else about it is kind of haphazard (someday I will make a song with a consistent melody! Someday!). This is the other two-year-old song.

This song was intended to be an actual song, with singing (well... synthesized singing/UTAU) and everything. There is in fact a vocal version of it out there, but I didn't take it with me to my Soundcloud because, quite frankly, it's a legitimate embarrassment riddled with errors. I don't even think the singing is synchronized with the song in that version for some reason. Oops. Anyway, This song was my first attempt at a Song Magic like those heard in Ar Tonelico (it is what it sounds like, to keep it simple- music that has some sort of magical effect). As it is, I kind of like it; I succeeded in getting what I was going for: a brass-heavy, full-sounding royal/militaristic theme. I'm oddly attached to it for some reason. I think it's the horns. That drum is probably really grating, though. Sorry. This song is about 9 months old, and apparently it was downhill from there.

These last two songs are pretty much just there to provide recent examples of what I've done. They're... lacking. I apologize in advance if you decide to actually listen to them.

I remember finishing this song and being really proud of it! ...Then I sat on it for a bit and slowly it started to absolutely make me cringe. As one of my composer friends said, "Are there more than two chords in this song? No? I won't judge it, then. It's hard to judge something so monotone." (Said composer friend is... kind of a jerk but that's beside the point, haha.) It's meandering, kind of monotonous, and it doesn't even really have the feel I was shooting for (I wanted something a bit more sharp and menacing, I think). I don't even know if I did the harmonies right. Maybe if you squint, turn your head sideways, and classify it as more of a chant, it's not so bad? This is an Ar Tonelico-style Song Magic, by the way, as indicated by the title and the Hymmnos language and all that.

Oh my god what happened here I am so, so sorry. This song is supposed to be more BGM-like, because it's a Cosmosphere theme (basically, a theme representative of a character's mind-world). I was proud of it for 5 minutes but then it just blew up in my face. I'm pretty sure the lyrics are out of sync and I'm not sure how I let that happen. I... like the flute/horn combination, though, even though it's a bit too feminine for the character I had in mind? Whatever. I'm definitely re-making this one when I get a chance.

So, yeah, that's pretty much my musical portfolio. Please be gentle. :D
  11. Lots of great and talented musicians here! :) Well done, everyone!

@Sami, you're a very talented musician. Keep it up! You will only get better with practice!
  12. Well, this thread mostly runs on honor system. There are no official rules or rule enforcement in here. It obviously would be very polite for posters to comment on the post or posts above them when sharing something new but no one can really make anyone do that.

@Sami, I've taken the time to go through some of your songs. Since you are a beginner I'm afraid some of my vocabulary may fly the coop. I would recommend looking into learning the first level of music theory. Most of this will cover the principles of reading music such as pitch, time, and rhythm; but things like musical phrasing and chord building as well. There are many books written in laymen's term.

This will help you learn how to construct the pieces of music that make your whole song. It's very much like writing a few sentences and building paragraphs. Just as with language, where you don't want to make a run on sentence, the same is in music.  You can almost think of a 'sentence' of music having clauses and punctuation. Good music, like a good paragraph, has short and long sentences, too. Some terms I want you to look up are: Motif and cadence.

Think of melody as your long sentence and motif as your short one. The cadence will be your transition into the next paragraph.

I told you in another thread but don't fret about being a rookie. I remember how my compositions used to sound very much like yours. It's all about practice and teaching yourself. I was my own advocate.
  13. I'm sorry for neglecting to directly address the songs/posters above me- I was in a bit of a time crunch and I flat-out spaced on it. I've been mining just about every linked soundcloud for several hours now, and really, I am impressed. I guess, being not so terribly experienced in the technical aspects of music, I'm not sure what else I can say other than "This sounds really good." But I'll try. I might not be able to clear the entire page just yet, but I'll work my way backward after this batch.

@Iron Croc: Aha! So that's your soundcloud I bumped into! I found it by way of Ms Littlefish's soundcloud and poked around a bit before class (my short-term memory is a little shot, though, so I don't remember which songs I already listened to- maybe I'll just comment on your soundcloud uploads directly for the others). I'm a sucker for grand, sweeping pieces using instruments with "divine" connotations such as organs. It does certainly have a royal feel to it, and it's definitely very complex. I'm sorry, though, I had to look up what a toccata was. I can definitely hear the improvisational aspect of a toccata in this piece, though!

    @Sinathor:

Shattering the Machinery of Existence caught me off guard in a great way (probably because I'd been listening to more classical fare prior to it, haha), It's got a fantastic energy to it, and that electric guitar lends a grindy crunch to it that adds to the aggressive feel. Is your RPG a standard turn-based one? I don't think this song would be too out of of place in a game with an action-based battle system.

As the Curtain of War Falls... the synths remind me of Etrian Odyssey's music (before the fourth installment and The Millenum Girl). You'd probably have to take a listen to the series's music to get what I mean... something about that guitar opening strikes me as familiar. There's a melodic similarity to an Etrian Odyssey song but I can't remember which one it is. (As a side note, one quality of EO's music is that the quality is consistently great despite using old video game-style instruments. The comparison is a good thing!)

Floating in Interstellar Cosmic Haze... it's a little stark, but if Cyberpunk is what I think it is, it's a very fitting arrangement. I will echo the above sentiment that it's a touch too long for a standard game piece, but it seems you have a plan for that already, so there's no problem.

The Eastern City and All Its Blessings... the title is almost ironic, as the song seems to have a dark feel to me. The melody instrument casts a bit of light on it, though, and it definitely seems like a valid twist on the idea of a town theme. Are there any stealth missions in your game? This feels like this could fit for one.

@Ms Littlefish: This theme, to me, paints a mysterious, if somewhat dim picture. That might be the influence from the picture talking though. Or maybe it's the clarinet/oboe/woodwind (I'm sorry, which one is it? I'm rusty on precise instrument identification) that makes it feel "musty." Kind of like an attic or an antique store.

@Cyreides: This song evokes a lot in a little time. It reminds me a bit of a track from Golden Sun that had a similar heavy piano beginning. It certainly is atmospheric; I get a sense of "underwater" or "ruins" from it.

I think that's everyone from Iron Croc down; if I missed you, let me know and I'll come back for you in the next batch. The songs above Iron Croc I'll get to in the next batch. I'm going to go do a little research and see if I can remember any musical themes I wanted to play with...
  14. Thanks, Sami. The feature instrument here is a clarinet. I'm glad you have said that it sounds mysterious and musty. The game is a horror themed puzzle game set in the Victorian era so 'must' and 'antique' are perfect adjectives for my direction with the music.
  15. Well, I don't like double posting but it has been a few days. If anyone is bothered, shoo me off with a (very stiff) broom.

This song was written with the foggy scenery outside my workroom the other morning, in mind. It is a quiet, sombre kind of scene but with all pine trees poking out I was getting mad mysterious fantasy vibes.
  16. Been a while since I posted in this thread, but here's a battle theme for a game I've been working on:

Good stuff, Ms. Littlefish.  That's more atmospheric than what I'm used to from you, but your choice in instrumentation is getting more sophisticated.  Nice dynamics as always.  The strings that kick in around 51 seconds might be a bit too overpowering for the composition, though.  Feels like the tiptoes turn into marching and it's not so foggy and mysterious anymore.
  17. Very nice, Fishy. I too like those dynamics.

Interesting, Housekeeping. Very unconventional battle theme. Then again, your whole style is rather unconventional, isn't it? :p

I like it though! It has a very R&B feeling to me.

It ends so abruptly though! I'm sure it loops flawlessly ingame, however. :D

Alrighty. Here's the latest track for my game, an ambience track that was going to be the background for a dancing mini game. (Ah well...)

    Enjoy!
  18. Thank you, Housekeeping. I've been trying to tone down those strings for the exactly reason. I may just take down their volume or lower the bass level some. They used be a lot bigger. It's strange you mention the instrumentation. I am primarily a classical and folk musician and most of my work the past few months has been my experimentation into other genres. This is very much my bread and butter! Your piece has some wonderful elements in it. I love the bass the most. I'm pretty sure I've made some Earthbound comparisons in the past, but it's so spectacular, that bass. I like the sudden string breaks as well. Almost like a coffee break.
  19. @Iron Croc: Yeah, it ends abruptly there; when it loops, it goes right back to those record cuts, so it makes sense in context, I swear!

Why didn't you make the party crowd its own track?  Seems like it would make a good BGS, but I guess it works either way.

@Ms. Littlefish: I may have been channeling Earthbound a bit when I made that (and this game in general), so I'll take the comparison.
