  1. Thank you, Boyflea and Padr - looking forward to hearing your full thoughts when you're finished.

I've uploaded a new build that makes use of Zeus81's Fullscreen++ script. Another player pointed out to me that RMVXA stretches in a bad way when going to fullscreen on wider monitors, so I'm trying out this new script to see if it alleviates the issue for certain users.

You can still use the default fullscreen with alt-enter, but you can use FS++ by using F5, then using F6 to change the ratio. This should help make the game look better while fullscreened to players with widescreen monitors.

I've also included a Controls.txt file for people unfamiliar with RPG Maker controls.

    ------------------------------

New animated title screen, as well!

    [embedded media]

    ------------------------------

Quick update for 2/9: The guilt puzzle had a leftover bit of logic on one of the pentagram switches that was making the puzzle difficult to solve because its flow was illogical. This has been fixed.

Looking forward to it, I use a tv with hdmi to play the game and when I put it fullscreen usually I have to open tv settings etc... and move the screen to fit the game. Just a small thing but one I've noticed with all VXAce games. Hope this fixes it.
  3. For the life of me I can't get the guilt puzzle to trigger one of the walls.
    Don't click me. I'm a puzzle spoiler.
Of the 4 switches i've unlocked 3 while green 1 while black no combination, of 4, 3, 2 or 1 will open the wall just below the first pentragram switch.
  4. There's actually one switch that wasn't working as intended, although the puzzle is still solvable. I updated the download link with the fix, but the switch in green's lower right room won't do anything unless the switch in the bottom of Shade's is off (leftover behavior from a previous version).

If you can set all switches back to off (so all pentagrams are glowing), then the solution is:

1.Start on Guilt's side. Go through the mirror, touch the switch in the small hallway, go back through the mirror.
    2. Touch the switch in the bottom right room, go back through the mirror.
    3. Touch the switch in the bottom room, go back through the mirror.
    4. A new switch is now visible next to the torch near the mirror. Press that, do not go through the mirror.
    5. Go to the lower left room, touch the switch, go back through the mirror.
    6. Touch the lower left switch, go up to the upper left switch, go back through the mirror.
    7. Go to the upper left room.

The thing that doesn't work on the old version is that if you've pressed the switch in step 3, the switch in step 2 no longer does anything until you turn it back off. Again, it's still solvable without redownloading, but to get Guilt's lower right switch to properly remove the door in Shade's world, you need to make sure the switch in Shade's bottom room is off (pentagram is glowing).
  5. My problem is this dude. I think I may have messed up switches or variables doing it wrong of something. What I did was

    Spoiler
1 - go through mirror (hit switch as black)
2 - come back hit switch in bottom right (as green) backthrough mirror again.

Step 3 you posted I don't remember happening but I must have done.

But I did step 4 and 5 as green (switch beside mirror, go bottom left room hit switch. as green come back go through mirror.

The problem is I can't get out of small hallway as black where I hit the first switch. The wall that should disappear to let me into bottom room as black doesn't so I can't get to step 6

The switch in the bottom room is def on as far as I know but I don't remember being there or hitting it. That said I've been trying this on an off all day. Here's a SS of where I am and how it looks. All switches in green are pressed. Well one beside mirror, one in bottom right room and the one in bottom left room.

Btw the game is absolutely fantastic this far. Well done.
  6. Yeah, it might be unsolvable after all. That wall goes away from Guilt's lower right, but it doesn't do anything unless the switch on the other side is off - but you can't get to it.

It's a bug from a previous version that got overlooked, but the download has been updated with the fix as of a few days ago - if you redownload, then copy your save file over, it should be solvable if you go back to Guilt's lower right room, turn the switch off, then turn it on again.
  7. The update fixed it dude.

Great game, I like the way its so dark yet keeps the old school rpg non realistic feel. Its also cool that the happiest character in the story is Maestro. He kind of keeps the game light hearted in a really dark and depressing story. Really loving this. Got about 6.5 hours up on it so far but I'd say one to one and a half of those were trying to fix what I did wrong with Guilt.

Your characters are all very good which really drives the story. What I really like is they are all morally different shades of grey instead of pure black and white.

    Spoiler
I think I'm right near the end and I can see a twist coming that might never happen but it sure is interesting the way its building up.

Suven has went from a proper honorable type and slowly turned into a proper little and I hope he gets dead.
Tilana is kind of your typical grumpy anti-hero but written so well she really suits the story. I also really like how she comes across as like those real life loners who pick at everyone but really just want to be part of the group they fight with.
Varsena is hard to get my head around, seems well intentioned but manipulative at the same time. Again quite likable.
At first I thought Maestro was too comic relief to be the villain but he plays his role well and stops the game feeling too dark at times (which wouldn't be a problem).
Of all the characters Ben was the only really pure hero who always opted for the right thing which is great.

It does feel kind of weird waiting for the bad guy to show up and stop the game being so depressing though.

I totally get the game of thrones references and its really got a lot in common with the series from the dark depressing way the story is told, the deaths, the army of monsters to the north (which strangely enough in GoT are actually behind a wall.) I also think the name NorthWall may also be a part of the reason people like it.

From the minute Marion leaves your party, the game gets so depressing and West Silth is brilliant if a little predictable.

Maestro pulling the strings behind both Varsena and Tilana is also predictable but by the same token the game just wouldn't feel right without him being reponsible.

At the end and its easily shaping up to be a 9 or 10/10 games. Easily the strongest RPGMaker Game I've played on the strength of the story alone along with Feral Dreams though your character development really gives your game the edge.

One minor nitpick I will say is I haven't died once in battle so far and I think the game really could benifit from the bosses at least being slightly tougher.
  8. I'm really glad you enjoyed your playthrough, Padr - based on your remark of being at the end, I'm not totally sure if you've seen through the credits or you're at the last boss? I'll be particularly interested to hear your thoughts on the ending. It's the only section of the game that hasn't gone through multiple iterations of rewriting and feedback from others.

Sorry the Guilt thing was so frustrating - I had someone else run into the same issue, but I thought it was still solvable without the fix after seeing what the problem was. I appreciate your patience in playing through it for so long trying to figure it out. At least it tells me that the rest of that section probably works as intended since I can only imagine you thoroughly tried everything!

    Questions regarding the story
I wanted Suven to go from being a protagonist to an antagonist in a way that the player didn't feel was too unbelievable. I'm glad you seemed to really hate him by the end - how do you feel about his storyline and ultimate conclusion, with the main protagonist shifting at the end more towards Tilana?

Out of curiosity, did you choose to save Tilana or let Marion kill her? There are lots of small changes that happen for the rest of the game depending on your choice. She generally acts more sympathetically to Suven if you chose to save her. On the airship cutscene, Tilana talks to Suven if you saved her, while Varsena talks to him if you didn't. During the spirits fight, Maestro buffs Marion if you saved Tilana, whereas he makes Tilana go berserk and attack your party if you didn't.

It's funny you mention that you weren't sure if Maestro was the villain or not - that was certainly the atmosphere I wanted for him, but even as I was writing the game, there were times that I wasn't sure how much I wanted him to end up being a primary antagonist and how much I just wanted him to be a weird help you/hurt you jester-like sort of character. Even the decision to have him join the party was something I went back and forth on for quite some time.

Regarding your mention of it feeling weird that there's not a readily identifiable antagonist - do you think that detracts from the game? Any thoughts on what you might change or add to make it feel less weird if you don't think it works?

I suppose at some point I'll have to actually watch GoT. I really only know about it from pop culture osmosis and South Park parodies.

Any bosses that stand out as being boring or too flat? I'm actually OK with the player never getting a game over if they played well - I've put a lot of time into trying to get a proper balance in the challenge of the game so that everyone can finish it without having to try a boss more than twice. However, if you think there's a spot where it's just a cakewalk to the point of feeling more like it's just padding time or a pointless grind, I'd very much like to know.

Any abilities you found yourself not using, or that you felt were unbalanced in any way? I've currently got my eye on Conviction as a target for buffing. Tilana very much has two playstyles for the end of the game between Wolf Form and Hybrid Form - did you find yourself trying out Wolf Form at all? It's not as good for her solo fight, I think, but for the very last battle, you can use her as more of a party buffer instead of your hard-hitting fighter.

Did you happen to pick up the Raven's Scythe? I had some reports that people were picking up the Cursed Sickle and it never transforming into a usable weapon.

Any puzzles you didn't enjoy or that you'd like to especially highlight?

Thank you very much for taking the time to play through and leave feedback for me - it's greatly appreciated!

No worries on the Guilt thing, if I'd done it right in the first place I wouldn't have got stuck. I was like so it kind of fit the theme haha.

I'll put the rest in spoilers
    Spoiler
I'm not quite at the last boss but close I think/hope.
I loved Suven going like that because I hate whiter than white characters and from the start I was like I hope if someone bites it, its Suven, I kind of knew he wouldn't because he was my only healer but still. Its part of why I really like this game and GoT (sorry about the comparisons, its just one of those stories where no one is 100% good or 100% evil.)

I love that the game has so many people twisted by revenge and that there is no out and out antagonist for the same reason I disliked Suven at the start and even more when he became whiney.
I like Tilana becoming the hero because I like her character in general, always conflicted and wanting to fit in without really being able. I chose to save her because I found Marion way too bossy and I was like f**k you. I'll probably play through again and choose the other option.

I found the skills just fine and none of the bosses were boring per se as they didn't drag too long but I got through a few of them just attacking and healing. To be honest, maybe having played so many RM games I very rarely used any buffs, debuffs or status effects and mostly got through the game with elemental magic, Suvens healing and kind of pre-predicting the enemies and healing before the big shots came.

I nearly always used the werewolf form when available as I found not letting the enemies heal was a great plus (maybe even a little OP) especially in the fight in the volcano for the power source, it gave me a chance to not have to focus on the green crystal too much and time to take all the crystal our with holy barrage from Suven, while Tilana kept the magi from being healed and Varsena could just fire magic where she wanted.

It was probably my strongest tactic in the game on tougher battles once I had a trio. Holy Barrage, Tilanas attack that prevents heal in hybrid form and attack magic with Varsena.

I actually enjoyed all the puzzles and the increasing difficulty as the game went on which really added to it.

I found the Cursed Sickle but couldn't equip it, I though maybe thats for another character so I kind of forgot about it after that.

Honestly I'm struggling to find any faults in the game in general. Maybe more realistic graphics that don't look RPG Maker like would add to the darker story but the current ones don't take away from it at all.

Also your choice of music is perfect too.
  10. In regards to the Cursed Sickle and Cursed Pendant - you shouldn't be able to equip them. If you have them in your inventory after completing Varsena and Tilana's sections, they should turn into the Raven's Scythe and Savage's Pendant, respectively.

I'm getting reports that the Cursed Sickle is not properly transforming, however, which is really bizarre, because it used to, and it's a super-simple, extremely straightforward thing - at the end of each person's wing, it just says, "Conditional: in inventory? Remove and add new thing." I really can't imagine what would go wrong, but I'm about to go dig into it in a moment here.

Got it. When you do Tilana and Varsena's sections, your inventory changes from "main" to a second inventory that you use during their wings. I was doing the check for the Cursed Sickle in your inventory before switching you back to your main inventory, so it wasn't finding it, then just adding in the Cursed Sickle again. I've fixed the issue and am uploading now - though I don't think you'll be able to use the Raven's Scythe unless you go back to a save before picking up the Cursed Sickle or before completing Varsena's wing (it's not game-breaking - it's got better stats than Mage's Staff and lets Varsena's Shade abilities heal her for 20% of the damage done).

That's interesting that holy barrage worked on Belzar and his crystals - I very pointedly added the power source to discourage AoE as a strategy for that fight, since it will just keep absorbing all the damage and powering at least 2 crystals back up constantly.

It only worked I think because the green crystal was ineffective when I hit Belzar with the Deadly Wound move from Tilana's hybrid form.
That meant I could fire 2 holy barrages and take down all 4 crystals at once without Belzar getting healed and not having to focus on the green crystal at all.
Than fire everything at Belzar until the power source booted green back up
Once green was repowered back I simply repeated the formula I did have to heal a couple of times and think I had to use a revive at one stage but once Belzar couldn't be healed it was straightforward enough to kill him. Deadly Wound also hit pretty hard so it was kind of my first port of call in almost every battle, except the 1v1 with
    Spoiler
    Victor
  12. When you used holy barrage, did the power source not absorb the damage done to it and then instantly power back up 1-2 crystals? It should absorb all damage done to it, overcharging its MP, then immediately revive crystals at any point that one is down and it has at least 100 MP.

Only once or twice did it do two I think and never more than 2 crystal.
But overall is was a viable strategy as it usually only revived one crystal. that said it may have been luck and the power source just kept reviving the wrong crystal or ones I didn't care about.

Not sure of my exact level but I think I was about level 11 going into that fight maybe slightly higher.

I'm not 100% on this but I think even without holy barrage one person could focus solely on green and use deadly wound when teh green was brought back up to accomplish the same feat albeit with alot more healing going on. I honestly paid no attention to the 3 other crystals if they were brought back by the power source first.
  14. Ideally, you pick one or two crystals to keep down, then focus on Belzar. The power source should revive crystals fast enough that you can't keep all 4 down and it's very difficult to keep 3 down for more than a turn.

I added in the power source as a deterrent against AoEing all 4 down and cheesing the fight - which it sounds like you were able to do by spamming holy barrage?

I just want to check if you did the fight by only keeping 1 or 2 crystals down or if you were able to just AoE all of them down, because I tried to design the fight so that you couldn't do the latter.

I couldn't keep all 4 down but I could get all 4 down every 3 or so turns if that makes sense. Basically I could kill 4 as fast as the power source could revive 2 if that makes sense. And as long as the green was down while Tilana was building TP for Deadly Wound Belzar never got healed after I figured out what each crystal does. Maybe try and get the power source to focus on healing the crystals by priority of whats down? That said the battle certainly wasn't a cake walk and was one of very few where I had to use a revive. While its wasn't a cakewalk I never felt in danger of getting overcome if that makes sense which I kind of felt I would when I saw everything on screen. I'd imagine it would be a challenge for a newer player or someone who doesn't have as much experience playing RM games.

    Hardest fight
For me the hardest fight was the 1 vs 1 vs Victor where it feels like you are constantly on the back foot and scrambling to get on top of him. It was also my favourite so far but I imagine the players who struggle with overcoming Belzar will find him a nightmare. Might be something to look at. I actually did get game overed by him a couple of times.
  16. I believe the power source prioritizes sapphire (which charges it faster), jade (healing), ruby (offense), then amethyst (defense) when it powers crystals back up. It used to be random, but I did actually make it have a priority system.

I think it's probably at a good point based on your feedback and what I've seen from other peoples' playthroughs. I know a few people sometimes have trouble with him - especially if they allow him to cast blizzard unchecked without removing the chill debuff.

    Regarding the other fight
Since you had to try him a couple times - how do you feel about the length of time between retries? It's kind of a long cutscene leading up to the battle, but I couldn't find a spot that felt good to give the player control again to save. Being able to run around and open the menu and whatnot feels like it would spoil the flow of the scene. I thought about maybe having a little "Save your game?" choice show up while the screen is completely pink after Tilana shatters the power source. What do you think?

Anything you didn't feel was fair for Victor's fight? I'm glad it was your favorite fight, I think it's probably the hardest or second-hardest fight in the game. It was very difficult getting just the right balance for a 1v1 fight without making it boring. I feel like the best strategy typically involves keeping lycanthropic regen up, keeping deadly wound applied, and anticipating the best moments to shift out of hybrid form to restore MP.

Were you able to pick up on his "rotation" after doing him a couple times? He basically goes through 5 stacks of enrage that makes him act steadily faster and hit harder, before shifting into parry stance for 4-5 turns. You can interrupt his enrage stacking with a stun, though - but if you stun him too often, he breaks out and immediately maxes out his rage stacks. His Smite Evil ability also looks super brutal, but it locks him from using damaging abilities for 3 or 4 turns to give you time to recover.

    Regarding the end
Do you feel you were given enough chance to learn Maestro's abilities before the last fight? His "mini stealth" section wasn't designed to be a stealth section so much as it was a chance to have 3 easy battles to play around with his skills and figure out what he does.

    ------------------------

Update: Tilana's battle during her wing of the final dungeon now has the option to save just before the boss battle to alleviate the necessity of replaying a decently long cutscene in case of a game over.
  17. Yeah I didn't mind replaying the cutscene a few times but I think the save screen is a great idea in between those battles
    Spoiler
especially as the first one is just pretty much a cut scene. I would also recommend maybe a save screen before Suven/Galarand as that cutscene is pretty long as well and I've only had 2 goes at it but pretty tough to.

My strategy for Victor was somewhat similar, I kind of went with the following when he wasn't in parry mode. These were the priorities.
    1. When he had 2 turns upcoming to my 1, I always went with the stun move.
    2. Next priority was regen.
    3. I tried to keep him bleeding with the attack that does that because
    4. If I could keep him bleeding the absorb health from bloodthirst or whatever its called helped keep hp healthy.
    5. When HP was healthy I'd use the skill that sets his defence to 0 and follow it with frenzy to keep a bit of tp.
    6. When I thought he was heading for parry mode, he usually heals casts regen (least thats how it felt) so I tried to get deadly wound in.
When he switched to parry stance, I usually switched back to human form, than I just kept my health up and built tp and mp using lunar rage.
Onoce I had loads I simply tried to buff up just as Victor was coming out of it and went back to plan A.

Another reason it was a great battle was the variety of moves I had to use and could never resort to spamming one or two which was great.
    -------------------------------

The maestro bit was grand really, his moves were straight forward enough and the 3 battles was plenty to flick through the menu and try out various things.

Maybe another save before the last boss would be great. I used to feel the same playing Final Fantasy when there was a big cutscene right before the end. That said its only a minor nitpick, I'll probably get around to finishing it tonight.
  18. Ok, this puzzle doesn't make sense. The 'Your friends are all dead' one. The succubus on the left tells the truth. Because she says, "Marion recovers from Tilana's wounds." Which is a fact. And the right one said,"Marion died before Coravis." Which is a lie. So Marion can't be one of the ones that died. So there is no fourth person. So Coravis died first must be true. So the right one said," Ben died last." Which means Ben died second. So that means Rick died last. But it doesn't work. But that doesn't work. And neither did all the other combinations I tried that involved everyone but Marion. So I'm stuck.

The puzzle is fine. Spoilers will explain why.. but also by logic will give away who died when (which I suppose is the point of the puzzle.

My sister says I always lie = truth, my sister says I always tell the truth = lie.

There is no way around this.

    • (Sister 1) has to be telling the truth, It means person 1 is telling the
    • So my sister says I always lie has to be the lie (only 1 can tell the truth)
