Games you hate, yet everyone else cherishes.

  1. Soccer games (Winning Eleven, Pro Evolution Soccer, etc.) It's boring and lack of innovation.  people like the game because of the multiplayer feature.

Warcraft and Starcraft : Honestly I don't really like it because it's too complex and take lots of time to learn. Sometimes I feel like I'm being cheated when I play these games.
  2. Pretty much any online multi-player game except for the last of us... (I play games as a relaxing activity, to much stress and reaction requirements, don't enjoy it) Also pokemon and the Assassin's Creed franchise (the AC games are ok, but the story makes me cringe with it's nonsense.)
  3. I'd have to say Bioshock Infinite would be one game I don't like at all.

The first two bioshocks had their flaws, most prominent would be the lack of inventory system for all the stuff you instantly devour out of trash cans.

    And somewhat boring gun play.

But the world they were set in was fun enough for an actual completion. The first one holds the best story in my opinion.

Then you get Infinite, a much more prettier game. But with still boring gun play made worse with the 2 weapon limit, lack of interesting enemies, same old plasmids,

a story ripped from the film looper and a boring 2-dimensional side kick.

How Infinite ever got those 10/10 will forever baffle me.
  4. ... Barring unreasonably fast development time, I think its hard to accuse a game of ripping off something that only came out 6 months prior to it.

I haven't seen the movie, nor played the game, but I'm sure the similarities were coincidental.
  5. It's funny that you mention that, since they actually did change the story close to release.

... I want to comment on that, but I can't. I'm glad that people are different, and thinks different though :D

I've never heard of anyone not liking the Super Mario games! They're universally loved. I'm shocked.
I could never beat them. I'm just that bad. Plus I love action and story. Not a money milking franchise.

While you're no doubt entitled to your opinion, "money milking franchise" is objectively wrong. Super Mario Galaxy and, say, New Super Mario Bros. are such different games that explore vastly different gameplay mechanics. Money milking it is not, but it is using an established universe of characters.
  9. I can't get into the Mother/Earthbound series. I like the idea, but something in the execution just bores me to death.
  10. I can't say I really hate any game. Some I refuse to play, or just can't get into? Heck yeah, and I'm sure I've already said Final Fantasy. There is just something about the series that makes me unable to get into it. I can sit down and watch anybody play any game, and really enjoy myself. It makes it so much easier to criticize that way. I watched my friends play Dokapon Kingdom for DAYS, and was like "What the heck is this nonsense." Of course then I played it, and it was great. Things I know I'll dislike, I won't play. Same goes for reading, blah blah blah.

So, I guess I'll state the things that I don't get the concept of?:

Final Fantasy: Seriously. The name suggests that the fantasy is FINAL, yet it continues and continues. What are we at now, 25? Seriously. I was young when the earlier games came out, back in a time when games didn't interest me. However I will say, it's not that I'm not a fan of game series', (Harvest Moon, Suikoden, etc) there is just something about the way that Final Fantasy is put together as a series whole, that I don't like/understand. Suikoden and Harvest Moon are different. Suikoden follows a set theme (excluding Tierkreis), and there is an awesome storyline to that. It's not all about fighting, and it's very endearing. From what I've seen in the later games of Final Fantasy, (I would literally watch my brother play for HOURS, and not understand what's going on) there is a lot of fighting, and then cut-scenes, and I still don't know what the game was about. Nor can I even tell you which one it is. There was a girl with pink hair, that's really all I got from it.

Props though for a female lead that could kick-ass.

Summoner: You know, the game for PSII. Literally my brothers all-time favorite game. It looks promising, but not something I could get into.

Portal: Let me start by saying, that game is fun as hell. To watch. It get me excited to play, then I pick up the controller and bam, it's a simple puzzle game with funny sayings by the lead robot lady. It's hard, and even harder to understand. Once you get the hang of it, it loses quality.

I think that's all I can think of?
  11. For some reason, I really can't get into any of the Age of Empires games. I think I am used to action based games such as Skyrim...

I also don't like Portal, I expeced some thing compleatly different. :(

Modern Warfare... Hate it... Can't spawn without dieing... Y U LOB GERNADE?!?
  12. The original Final Fantasy was named that as at the time, Square thought that it would be the last game they would ever be able to release. They had basically no money left and were going to have to close doors. FF did well though, and we can see where that went.

Also, you know, I don't get the need to insult groups of people who play things I don't like. I think its really kind of a nasty toxic behavior of gamers to segregate themselves and make sure everyone knows they aren't associated with THOSE types of gamers. Idk, tribalism sucks. Why can't we just like and dislike different games without having to make nasty assumptions about the people who do like it.
  13. Each FF game is also its own standalone universe, with some cross pollination of themes, character names and locale names. So it's perfectly reasonable to like one or more games in the series and dislike the rest. I dislike 10 and 13 myself, while I like the rest to varying degrees. I also really enjoy FF: Tactics Advance 1 & 2; the gameplay is really fun in those.
  14. I've always felt Final Fantasy as a whole was solidly above average as a series, with a few individual games being better than above average, and a few slipping down below. I've never seen it as being as epic as a whole as people seem to think it is, even during what I consider the best run (FFV-VI-VII-Tactics).

Also, seriously I can't stand VIII.
  15. The problem with the Final Fantasy series is that most of its games have been well received.  A vast majority of them are "above average" in gameplay and story.  So, as a franchise, it's fawned over immensely and has a massive fanbase.  Because of that, you have a lot of players unable to look at their franchise or even individual games objectively.

Do I like the Final Fantasy series as a whole?  I guess.  I like more games of it than I hate.  Do I think it's the best RPG Storytelling ever?  No, I don't.  In fact, some of the most popular entries in the franchise baffle me for their abject idiocy, nonsensical plotlines, and boring 2 dimensional characters (Final Fantasy 7 anyone?).

Final Fantasy ends up taking a ton of flak because of its really bad fanbase who cannot look at the franchise or individual games through the lens of objectivity.  It also takes flak because some of its games are truly terrible and should never have been created, ha ha.  Final Fantasy 13?  Yeah, talking to you and your sequels of nonsensical story.

Up until 10, the franchise has been largely "good" with a few "bad" games thrown in.  After 10, though...  Oh man has the franchise started rolling downhill fast.  11 is completely online and boring as crap to play.  12 suffers from fairly massive design flaws all around, as well as a somewhat convoluted story (I seriously got 40 hours into the game and still didn't know what I was supposed to be doing, who the badguys were, and what my actual goals were).  13 suffers from severe linearity as well as somewhat boring characters and a story that feels like it was written by an epileptic monkey on meth (when the characters in the game decide to destroy their city in one scene and then in the next scene ten minutes later decide not to, only to decide 30 minutes further in to destroy it again...  You know you have some terrible writers on board and they should probably be fired for incompetence.  When your characters are not sure what their motivations are, the players aren't sure either, and that leads to some boring gameplay and a major disconnect from any story being told.  Massive design flaw).

As a franchise, Final Fantasy has been somewhat solid.  It's waning in recent years (especially with it's time travel pokemon clone) in terms of popularity and interest as well as solid gameplay mechanics or storytelling.  It is what it is though.  I simply think it's that they've got too many "old guys" still running the franchise who have just run out of ideas and are just throwing random stuff at the wall and hoping SOMETHING sells well.  It's the same issue the Resident Evil franchise seems to be running into as of late.  I, for one, loved the twist of fighting Las Plagas in 4 and then a mutated hybrid of them in 5.  What we got in 6...  Oh God, what a train wreck that is.  Before RE4, the franchise had shown signs of "losing steam" as they were just releasing the same game over and over and over again.  Zombies break out, virus to blame, solve a ton of puzzles and escape.  RE4 changed up the formula and made the franchise interesting again.  RE6 is showing a lot of tell-tale signs of stagnation again.

I think these failing franchises just need to find people who were absolute fans of the franchise (who know everything about the games) and hire them on while relegating the guys who are out of ideas to sit in the corner and help out the new blood until they get some ideas of their own.  Get some new people who know, love, and want to be faithful to the franchises, and these things will pick up in terms of quality again.  Leave them in the clutches of those who are out of ideas on what to do with them, and the franchises might as well die with the people who built them.
  16. I really liked FFVIII and FFX and X-2, Tactics, Tactics advance... 7 was kinda boring actually for me (tried it because people said it was good)... Dissidia Duodecim is nice at the start, but when I was already at the Untold Tale, I felt like "why am I still playing this?"...

on the general topic, I think I'd say Call of Duty... I liked CoD 1, but never liked those after it, yet others seem to flock every release of a new CoD...
  17. I started Call of Duty with "Black Ops".  I picked up the game because I wanted to see what all the fuss was about and why these games were hyped.  It most certainly wasn't the story (why are they all so bare-bones-boring?  I could write a better military storyline in my sleep without even trying!).  But, I played the multiplayer, and it was a ton of fun.  I enjoyed myself a lot.  Then came Modern Warfare 3.  Oh God, what a terrible game.  So, I retroactively bought MW1 and WaW.  WaW had a really great multiplayer which is severely plagued by cheaters, which makes it unplayable.  MW1 suffers from cheaters as well, and its gameplay is a bit "samey" with most games playing out similarly.

To be honest, if they just dropped the singleplayer Campaign in Call of Duty, I can't see it doing that badly in the future.  They should just use that disc space for improving the multiplayer experience (which has been lacking ever since I played Black Ops 1) and removing bugs/glitches/features that make gameplay somewhat unfair.

I actually picked up Battlefield 3 and 4 because CoD after Black Ops 1 has sucked so badly (as well as Halo 4 multiplayer) that it's the only thing I can still enjoy hours upon hours of gameplay without rage quits and burn outs.  In CoD, I complain about all the "BS" in the game code.  In BF, I complain about the moron teammates.  It's a huge difference in gameplay, execution, and features.
  18. well, I'm more of the solo game player nowadays mostly because most multiplayers nowadays require the internet... I used to play MMOs a lot when I'm at home (where we have an internet connection as opposed to my apartment)... but most of them right now are either "Spend lots of time playing per day" or "Use your real money" just so you can enjoy it... I miss the days when you can just play leisurely with your friends in an MMO and have total fun...
  19. Yeah, MMO's for a long time have been about severe minmaxing and milking moron players out of lots of money every single month ($15 subscription fee a MONTH?  Netflix costs half that, I think I know where my money is going instead!).  I actually stopped playing MMOs when they started doing the stupid "Raid" stuff.  What I used to like about them was simply customizing my character to do what I wanted them to do and setting up goals for myself to accomplish.  It's the reason I still play Runescape despite its slow evolution into WoW.  I don't want to put a party together to go do a raid to get "the best gear" for my character.  I already have issues dealing with ONE other person in real life and on the internet.  What on earth makes game designers think I want the headache of trying to manage 15 other players and get them all to use common sense, intelligence, and initiative as a team while also having them listen to the person leading the group?  It's bad enough I go to work and deal with these people, why should I have to deal with them in a video game as well?

I do enjoy solo or cooperative play though.  That is, playing a game by myself, or maybe with 3 of my closest friends.  Any more than that, and we get into "annoying the crap out of me" territory and I no longer find the game worth the headache involved.  I do also enjoy competitive play in video games as long as its done well (as in, focuses on intelligence and planning in gameplay instead of simply equipping the biggest stick available to win).  Myself, I have an internet connection so I can enjoy multiplayer if I choose to engage in it.  Others...  Well, they don't always have that option.  In the case of not having that option, I think there should at least be some really great singleplayer games.  Are there many these days?  No, not really.  For that, I feel sorry for those without an internet connection because your options for play are limited.
  20. Raids are supposed to be fun... but right now, they're becoming as simply an event only for Experts... If you're a noob no one will add you to the raid party, which makes noobs unable to learn so they stay as noobs...

maybe it's just that the trend of having the need to farm so much or use real money just to get the best gears are a huge reason as to why these supposedly fun events become Expert-exclusives...
