Weekly Art Challenge #12

Introduction

Weekly Art Challenge is a recurring event for the Art, Literature and Music forum wherein there is a new challenge for artists every week. The goal of the event is to encourage art and going outside the box by imposing interesting challenges and limitations. After a week, a poll will be up for everyone to vote to select the best entry. The winner with the most votes will receive a pretty little badge for bragging rights.

Rules

• A new challenge/theme will be posted up in a new thread every week.
  
• Participants are to follow the rules imposed by the challenge/theme. Any questions may be asked. However, I reserve the right to disqualify any entries that I feel do not meet the criterion.
  
• A challenge lasts for approximately a week. Deadline for all Weekly Challenges is strictly at 12:00AM, GMT +0, on Monday.
  
• On the week after, a poll will be up in the same thread. Only one entry will win. In the case where there are more than one winning entry with equal votes, all winning entries will be rewarded.
  
• Poll for voting will be available from the submission deadline to Saturday, when the winner will be announced.
  
• The winner gets to call the theme/challenge for the following week. If the winner does not wish to do so, then I will come up with one.
  
• All forms of art are welcome.
  
• Entries must be done completely from scratch by their respective participants. This means no pre-existing stock materials are allowed, regardless of the degree to which they have been altered. Whoever is caught intentionally violating this rule will be subject to the punishment stated in our Forum Rules regarding Credit Theft.
  
• No need to register. Just start working on your entry right away if you've decided to participate.
  
• Post your entries in this thread. WIPs are encouraged, but please explicitly specify your final submission.
  
• There is absolutely no measurements coming from us on the completion of a piece. Whether a piece is complete for final submission or not, is entirely your own call. So don't be discouraged if you think you can only afford to doodle a couple lines. Anything is fine.

Fantastical Tree.

It was old and gnarled, a twisted mockery of man at his most aged. The weight of a thousand moons seemed to push it closer to the earth as it pressed back, reaching desperately for the sky above. It bore leaves of flame which burned slowly, lighting the immediate surrounds with warmth and brightness, filling the air with the scent of burnt wood. The crackle of flames lisped through the air, winding its way through ones ears, drowning out even the song of the birds who bedded within the massive branches, bowed low. On the lowest branches were small trinkets left by the neighbouring villagers - little ribbons splashing colour among the branches, bits of string tied in bows and knots and little charms to ward away evils or beg healing of the tree. It burned, unconsumed, through all of time; the first tree and the last.

*cough* I tried to art. I'm not very good at it. >.<;

In the lore of my world there is an island with a folk song about a tree that parasites the Earth and causes the sun to fail. This is that folk song.

Marvelous mother tree your strong sturdy bark holds at ease.

She is never wrong, for if she is she will wither.
Secrets of doubt whisper through your branches.
Why do you doubt us so, mother tree?
Mother trees bark cracked and crackled, her leaves withered
and fell. Mother tree threw me away, I had questioned her and she is always
right.
Dearest mother tree she is gone and I am cold, I will wither
away to the bitter world. Without you I am a speck in the wind.
Without you mother life is cold and oh so bitter.
Sturdy her bark was mine is not, I will fall as all do.
Mother’s tree root, she is here for me…
Mother tree, together we are whole and together we will
fall.

@numfanklewhat: ahahaha that is a very silly but interesting idea. Totally digging it!

@Julien: yup that tree is definitely the "feels like home" fantasy mother tree that I usually like in RPGs. They're always massive, powerful, and kind.

That gave me a good laugh.  :guffaw:

Haha thank you! That was actually half of my intention, and here I thought it was unfunny. I'm glad you guys find it funny and have a laugh of it! :guffaw:

I think if you submit the image using the attachment, it is automatically converted into thumbnail, like Julien and daheji submission.

Can I draw my entry and then scan it in or does it have to be digital art?

Any kind of art is fine as long as it is something you made. :) Hopefully I find time for this tonight! Everyone's entries are a lot of fun so far~!

Just thought I’d post a WIP scan of my entry. I’ve had this idea of a metal tree in my head for a while now and thought that this would be a great chance to try it. I started out with the base of the tree and I’ve been picturing this metal tree with a sharp and wrapping look. Towards the top of the tree however it looks just a little more natural, but still has a sharp look to it at parts. I’m still experimenting with it however. I’m thinking that once I get colors laid down on it that it may look more how I’m imagining it. Now looking at it I may add a few more branches. Just thought that I would share my thoughts on this project  :)
