Just to put it out there, that is a highly personal opinion.
There are dozens, if not into the hundreds, of very well-received games which emulate and display dice rolling.
You might say that you don't get anything out of it and would like an option to disable it (and I'd agree with that), but it is objectively not a point worth detracting to some other developer, based on how many people enjoy games that feature it.
Indeed. I think dices are a perfectly fine addition to game mechanics. We all use random variables in the background, right? A visual dice does the same thing, but it gives the player a more obvious sense of luck. Or maybe a sense of control, even though there is none.
We all know the dices are not real, but does that matter? When you play Golden Eye, is the game less fun because you're not really James Bond? Okay, bad example, because being James Bod would probably be more fun... Okay, when you play Wolfenstein, is it less fun because you're not really shooting nazis? Okay, another bad example. One more try: When play International Superstar Soccer Pro, is it less fun because you don't really make millions playing a game of soccer? Okay, I give up...
It all depends on the game and how it is used though. I mean: Dices in a live action game make no sense, but dices in a board game or a strategical battle game, could really add tons of flavor to a game.
Imagine how boring Shoots And Ladders would be if all dices were taken out and replaced by a hidden event that takes a random number.
Honestly, I didn't enter to win any prizes... other than a badge. From there, I just had fun making a game that might appeal to the RMW community, since in the end you'd be playing it.... oh that, and the nod to Wind Ryder and the judges of course. :ewink:
Ah... Name dropping. So it
can work!
:p I tried that too. I did drop half the names of all members in the forum and beyond, but I didn't even get a single audience vote.
:p
