@ KainLightswom I meant to do the same thing for Sami, but since it seems you would be interested as well, I would like to soon gather all my links to the free materials I recommend. For now I can point in general directions.
I have been a user of Finale products for over 10 years but it is hard for me to recommend Notepad since it's functionality is so limited. I love the full version of Finale but it certainly is expensive. MuseScore is free and will give you a lot more flexibility. LMMS is a free DAW software and will allow you to apply sound fonts to all the midi tracks you export from your Notation software. I had never heard of solmire.com but if you download LMMS and start collecting soundfonts to use, it appears you will have a lot more options. If you ever need help using LMMS I know the in and outs fairly well. I can help with basic mixing as well. I like PMs.
As for free/cheap soundfonts that I can recommend for starters. Check out DSK Music, sf2midi.com, and sontiana. VSTcafe is also a good site for finding free/cheap VST samples and effects. I have my recommendations from all these websites and as much as I'd love to point at all my recommendations, it really will be a matter of searching for them and it took me a long time to put together the library I used before I purchased my current samples.
As far as the music you've posted. It really is pretty good if these are your first compositions. Many of the melodies and motifs are very memorable and I think you're more than well on your way.

Hey and thanks for the great compliment! And yes you're correct. Very low pitched and kind of sharpened the sound and gave it a slight echo.@Mana Aeliria: I stumbled upon your soundcloud a while ago, I think! For Elite Warrior, I love military-esque themes with heavy brass and strings, so this was right up my alley. I definitely get the image of some powerful military general. That stringed instrument (cello?)
I used a violin in this piece. Also added more tremolo to it and cleaned up the sound. :)sounds divine. Algearia Desert... what is that opening instrument? -
So I finally was able to do a Soundcloud and uploaded this as a test

Nice topic and great music everyone!
Here's my recent song, though not rpg inspired but inspired by H.P.Lovecraft. Dark classical style, fits more to a horror setting.
I would love to read your thoughts on it! -
Hey guys, Josh here with (currently) Joshua Harrison Publishing. I say currently as I am adding some members to my team and we will be changing the name as well.
Anyways, you came here for music... and music you shall receive.
Quick and dirty about me; 23 years old, Music Education Choral and Band double major, was accepted into composition private studies a year early, one of only four students in those studies, have experience performing multiple venues as a choir, band or solo, have experience hearing my original compositions played and sung, I write everything from scratch (no pre-made loops, you only get my sweat and tears), I write for film and performance primarily but have looked at gaming recently, I am currently working on an indie rpg style horror puzzle game as their music director.
*wheez* *pant* Whew... now that the longest run-on sentence in the world is over. If you have time to check out my site you can see more details about me, my process, a big list of songs to listen to (even a demo video that I terribly made!) and if you want to hear more in-game check out my link below for "Fragile" so you can see some of my better works in full context.
But, here's a list of works you may be interested in hearing... Gotta put the bread winning team in first right? Now all these compositions are demos and not fully orchestrated, they are only to be an example of the musical painting. I have access to real instruments for recording if absolutely necessary, as well as professional recording equipment. I even write pretty much all my music on the piano first... with that I will say that my "forte" is actually soft, mysterious, calming music and piano sonatas. I dabbed in minimalism so if you like Steve Reich, John Adams, Terry Riley, Phillip Glass or even that fancy new age music, you may wanna take a listen to those as well.
Ok, finally... here's the real deal.
I'll put them in some sort of order.
Piano works.
This guy is a pretty little diddy I wrote in about 5 minutes.
This was my first attempt at "horror"ish game music.
A little sonatina I wrote, actually worked really well with a few tweaks in "Fragile"
Ah... the traditional bad guy organ not "technically" piano, but it's a keyboard so it's alright.... everyone needs to write one yes? I imagine Kagato playing this before trying to kill Tenchi.
Ok, full orchestral tracks.
This was written for film. It depicts the antagonist following the antagonist, sneakily making his way closer...and closer... until BWAMO! Also, a certain section cut out of this and editted made really good battle music.
Film again. The antagonist's theme... gotta love it... it's eerie... it's powerful.. and just downright kinda cool
Another film. The arrival.... this guy is a fun one.... it's kind of like a precursor to battle, also made good battle music when sped up.
Guess what..more film..... This guy is a mixture of a lot of emotions... what I first imagined was the antagonist killing the protagonist, and then realizing what he had done... this song plays while he is tormented about this deed, and either the hero forgives him and he changes his ways, or the hero doesn't really die.... I could never pick one.
The Odd Ones Out
A pretty little reprieve from the tension with just a hint of romance.
Another cute little diddy... not much to describe it... everyone sees something different while listening.
Anyways, I think i've put way too much one here... there's more on the soundcloud reel, more than that on my website, and I probably have more on my computer.... Hope you enjoy and most of all felt some of the emotions I was portraying. Just a little PS one of my companies pledges is to never use cut and paste loops and the likes... we compose everything from scratch and every single note, dynamic and expression has a purpose. (This isn't a knock at you loop guys, I'm just stating the pledge.) -
@Joshua Harrison I can definitely see the minimalist inspiration . I've listened to a number of the postings on your soundcloud. I have to say so far, that "Ripples" is currently my favorite. The chords and atmosphere they create is so lovely. But I love the swelling and backing off that your orchestral tracks seem to employ in general. "Rebirth" is a good example of that.
Our music writing process seems rather similar actually. Not only do I notate everything down to each little pesky staccato mark, I start the vast majority of my writing on the piano. Welcome to the forum. I hope to see you hanging out a little more here.
@Dimitris Immediately I love that line the cello section is playing. It has an interesting development in the middle and morseo with the key change. This piece is very scenic and I like the town/place it describes. And that's what I have a vision of. This sort of grungy, desolate town. Probably with ghosties and ghouls.
Well, I won't post absolutely everything I've done this last month but it has been awhile since I've shared an update.
This is a selection from what I did for 12-hours-of-Christmas. I certainly don't expect everyone to, but the rest of the playlist from that event can be found on the soundcloud, as well as download details for anyone interested.
And this one is a piece I did for Restaff -
@Ms Littlefish Thank you for commenting! I've listened your music and actually you show your strength as a composer and performer. I'd like to point two of your songs
. "The Marionette". I love early 20th century classical music, avand garde and composers like Xenakis, Schonberg and Cage to name a few. Your use of chords and melodies reminds me of that musical style. You manage not to go overboard and balance between playfull, intense and...deranged?? And that's amazing.
"Her walk home". No need to comment on the composition process. That song managed to move me. It's my favorite.
Keep composing. -
Pretty proud of this one, so I'll post it here too :)
-
I told you the last time I heard this piece. But I absolutely love the piano lead in the beginning of the piece with guitars just holding chords until it builds into that rhythm guitar section. It's such a lovely contrast. <3
Really looking forward to hearing more songs from this project. -
So this is the end credits song from a game of mine.
-
hey guys and girls, bit of music for you :)
Hope you enjoy :) if you want to use it for anything then pm me xxx

Here's a random title screen track I never used.

Ok, the past week I did a lot of video editing for a new gaming channel and I wrote 2 songs for 2 videos.
First is the intro song

Second song for a fail compilation and starts at about 0:50s

If you happen to listen to them, I would love to read your thoughts. -
@Dream3r Your composer did an amazing job!

I have 2 Musics for you (Please Credit me for my Musics, if you use it)
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Primal Dialga (Orchestral Soundfont by Me)
And a unknown "work in process" Remix project by Me:
It's the main melody "Action" (Yes, it's called so) of the Game ´Moorhuhn:Der Fluch des Goldes´. Only appeared in Germany -
Aah, I need to get used to moderating this section still. I've been missing stuff when I shouldn't.
Please, no posting remixes of songs unless you have permission to do so by the original composer. -
Are covers okay? Like that FF 7 rock cover I did?Aah, I need to get used to moderating this section still. I've been missing stuff when I shouldn't.
Please, no posting remixes of songs unless you have permission to do so by the original composer.
Anyway, I wanted to share this piece. It is a song I made for a dance club portion of my game. I love making dance clubs to my games because it allows you to do so many things -
Unless you can prove that SquareEnix is just fine with people making covers, then no. That's what I meant by having permission. There are some big companies that do allow it.

All right, I removed it just in case.Unless you can prove that SquareEnix is just fine with people making covers, then no. That's what I meant by having permission. There are some big companies that do allow it.

Thank you!
