Finally got around to doing a recorded playthrough of the finished game. It's now been included in the original post as "Creator Walkthrough With Commentary." So if you're just curious to see a playthrough of the game, or if you're stuck on a particular part, feel free to check it out!

VERY well done. We totally need more games like this one which really feels "complete" for what it is. Challenging combat, smart puzzles, interesting level design, intriguing story telling... only until the last part, especially the ending.
SpoilerIt seemed like Suven's downfall towards the end was too sudden and the motivations for the girls to work with the imp were kinda... weak after all he had done to them and others even if he was ordered to do so. Most importantly, the ending was disappointing in that it is pretty contradictory to have a cliffhanger ending only to be met with a "the end" screen. You could have just removed the "unnamed female conspirator" part, because it doesn't really serve any purpose if we are not supposed to hear anything more about her. In fact, I am fine with that nothing was solved by the end and consequences of the final confrontation were left to player imagination (I guess?). It is just that the story builds up to a cliffhanger only to be wrapped up with a "the end" screen when nothing is really finished. -
Thanks very much for the feedback and for playing, Vinedrius - really glad you enjoyed it, for the most part.

SpoilerReally, the ending is that Varsena returns to Elblum to force it to open to outsiders because she thinks that the same thing that happened to Northwall will happen to it if everyone remained in isolation. That's what she was doing in Silth in the first place - trying to open up relations between Elblum and Silth.
However, as shown in Varsena's section of the final dungeon, she's already had a bit of a dark bent. She'd been experimenting with magic that's verboten in Elblum. Although Maestro's minions caused her a lot of anguish by ripping her soul apart into several pieces, she also decides that working with Maestro may ultimately feed into her end goal. She tells him, "I know what you're doing and I won't be a puppet - but I will play along."
Tilana is just struggling to find a place in the world. She's livid about what Maestro did to her and would never forgive him, but she really only travels with Suven because she thinks he will cure her and she doesn't know what to do otherwise. She may not feel strongly about his purpose of saving Northwall, but it IS a purpose. When she realizes that he's become totally hellbent on revenge in his grief and is basically just using her to get back at Maestro, it throws her whole perspective into question.
She also is faced with the decision to let herself be killed by her brother or to save herself by embracing her curse in the final dungeon. She only lives because she shatters the power source that strengthens her hybrid form abilities and turns them darker. She knows she's going to be seen as a savage monster at this point and decides that she wants to see what Maestro is offering - she wants nothing to do with him, but maybe the other "monsters" could give her a purpose and a home again.
After the last battle when she realizes she's just been used again, she decides that Aylan won't be safe if there really is a bigger threat looming, so even though she expects to be turned away, she tries to convince them to come back with her to the monsters. Of course, nobody's going to listen to that, except for Victor - who never hated her nearly as much as Maestro made it seem. It's even suggested that Victor's the only one in town who would forgive her if you talk to him when you first visit Aylan.
So the ending scene is Tilana and Victor returning to the monsters, presumably where Tilana will finally find a new home and a sense of belonging in the world.
I've thought about expanding the world and exploring what might be happening on other continents, where Tilana, Victor and the monsters might go, what may come of Elblum, and if there's any truth to what Maestro said about this mysterious woman. Keep in mind, he's been lying throughout the entire game - there may not even be another force out there. He could've been lying about being "trapped" as yet another manipulation. However, I think Northwall is going to be my last foray into making a fairly major game on my own. I didn't want anyone to get the idea that I was working on a sequel or anything and I felt that this particular story was done - the story of Northwall and Suven, which ends with the fall of both.
The story of Varsena, the story of Tilana, and the story of Maestro could certainly be expanded upon, but they're not intended as cliffhangers - they're just other stories that would require entirely new games. -
hello.
how do you win the brother and sister fight easy way. -
@norman You can view my walkthrough video of that section here, queued up to the 8m49s mark where that fight begins.
As a general strategy, however:
1. Keep lycanthropic regen up. It's your most reliable source of healing and will generally keep up with his DPS.
2. Keep lunar strength up. It provides more ATK and, importantly, more AGI, which will allow you to act more frequently.
3. Try to keep the armor break from Piercing Slash up so your attacks will do more damage.
4. Try to keep Deadly Wound up to prevent him from self-healing.
5. If you stun him too many times in a short span, he will enrage, but you can safely stun him every so often to buy yourself an extra round of damage or healing.
6. Wolf form is great for groups, but this fight is probably easier if you stick to using human and hybrid form. As an additional note, if your buffs are about to run out, it's faster to shift into human form, then shift back into hybrid form to refresh them than it is to refresh them one by one. -
I've been watching for this game since years ago.
Downloading now and I'll give opinions later. -
hello.
thanks -
I just finished watching all the gameplay videos you recorded. I have to say, they were very entertaining! You did a good job with the characters' voices! :)
-
@grem333: Thank you, I appreciate it. I'm glad you enjoyed the playthrough. I thought it might be good to read out the dialogue as I heard it in my head, so people would have a fairly accurate idea of how some of the lines were supposed to be delivered. I'm happy that it came across well.
@norman: I take it you beat Victor? If you have trouble with any of the other final dungeon bosses, you can check out my walkthrough videos for some thoughts. -
Heya. Sorry for the delay, but I've finally started playing the final version. In Aylan woods at the moment. So far so good. I like that you've changed all the battlers now from those old front-facing ones. It looks a lot better.
-
Wow, pretty great game. I wish there were warning points to save, e.x. the cave at the start with the giant spider. Maestro just appeared out of nowhere and I had no option to save. Great game though.
-
Really glad you've enjoyed it, Dinkus - I believe every boss battle except for the cave spider and one of the ones in the final dungeon does have a moment's pause to hint to the player that they should save. Another pair suggested having a little hint to save before the cave spider, though, so I may include a little aside in the hallway before that chamber.

Splendid game. I had lots of fun. The ending was very cliff-hangery, though, and knowing there won't be a sequel is a bit disappointing. I expected Suven to have survived and about to lead either a quest of revenge or redemption towards his former allies and Maestro's threat. Anyways it was a fantastic experience :3

Thanks very much for the feedback, Darth Valer, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
That's an interesting idea about Suven perhaps having a quest of redemption - I certainly intended that he was killed in the last fight (rather unceremoniously - no last words or dramatic final monologue), but it would be a potential idea for a sequel that perhaps he did survive or was somehow revived and now had to find a way to redeem himself. I've mulled over the idea of having a sequel take place somewhere through the portal, where Tilana and Varsena would appear again as non-party members (or temporary, kick-ass party members).
Still, I think the sheer scope of a new project is beyond what I'm looking to do at the moment. It's fun to consider what a "Northwall 2" might look like, though. -
Decent game thus far.
-
Discovered that the Dropbox links have been broken, so I've re-uploaded the RTP and non-RTP packages of the game in the original post so people can once again play Northwall.

Nice game!
I am having a hard time defeating Balzar on Mount Flarus. He is very strong! And the crystals are a headache. Any tips for me to get over this part? I have tried several times. -
Spoilers: I still think the main characters are more anti-heroes then villains. At one point you had the werewolf girl fighting two townspeople and said she could have run away but decided to fight. And because she killed one of them that made her the villain. But what could she have done? Kept running for the rest of her life until they finally corner and killed her? She was being hunted down for something she had no control over but now she did and was no longer the monster they hunted. But they were only interested in revenge, not reason. So she defended herself. I think it was a bit manipulative for them to end up being illusions. Just to paint her as a monster. With no real-world consequences as a result. It was like the movie 'It's a wonderful life.' What would happen if you made different choices in life only to experience it wasn't real. But it didn't have the emotional weight because it didn't last long and townspeople that we barely knew. When the choice is I could protect myself or let them kill me it isn't really a choice at all.
That little imp guy was also trying to save his people (the monsters) the only way he knew how. Ultimately, it worked.
I would have liked to see the werewolf girl become the peacekeeper between the humans and the monster refugees and worked together to defeat this great evil the monsters were fleeing from. But you said that was the end even though it seems that there might be a final act.
I apologize if I repeated myself from before. This was from a long time ago and not even sure I'm getting my facts straight. I didn't even know I still had this as 'watching this thread.' But I felted strongly that the characters seem mischaracterized to me. -
I am playing your game. It is nice. But I am stuck at Mount Flarus Boss. I am underleveledas I think because I cannot defeat it whatever and there is no place to grind to levek up.
