STORY
The Vei Empire, in its later years, was rocked by debt, plagues, and civil war. The country finally met its demise when King Tarquin of Galma sacked and burned the Veii capital of Glaucus. This marked the start of the Feudal Age: where the lands of the former Vei Empire formed their own countries. Castles are everywhere and monsters roam the wild.
In FA 1224, a sorcerer named Vespion took control of the country of Itoi. Claiming to be from another world, he set out to build his own empire. No matter where the wizard-king's legions went, they imposed ridiculous clothing and electronic music on the territory occupied. Force of arms could only keep Vespion contained at best.
Ironically, it took ten men to foil Vespion's aspirations of conquest: the knight Tobias, his eight squires, and the mage Atlas. They penetrated deep into Itoi and stormed his fortress.
The great battle that followed saw the death of Tobias and the weakening of Vespion. Unable to kill the wizard, Atlas sealed him away within an aluminum cylinder with the words "New Coke" inscribed on it (Vespion seemed fond of drinking
its contents).
Predicting that he would be released from his prison within 1,000 years, Atlas enhanced the sword of the fallen Tobias into a stronger weapon: the magic sword Zelc. It would only be wielded by a Chosen One who would find a Slime Core five years after Vespion's
release.
1,000 years after his defeat, an asteroid slammed into the forests of Itoi and the shock broke Vespion free of his prison, allowing him to mount another bid at world domination. His castle has been rebuilt and a new army has been formed.
It is now FA 2229...
CONCEPT
The idea for New Fairy Tale goes back over a decade. Intending a story with a comedic bent to it, I thought it would have been fun to poke at the conventions of your generic role-playing game, mostly JRPGs. Things like 99-of-one-item caps and NPCs who are stuck saying the same stuff over and over again in the same place, that kind of stuff. Originally, it was going to be made with RMVX, which I had on my old laptop. The laptop died on me last autumn and I'd just gotten around to replacing it. I was able to get a feel with the trial version of RMMV, which blows VX out of the water (More than five tilesets? Heck yeah!).
In NFT, two worlds exist: the Realm of Science (our universe) and the Realm of Magic, which occasionally overlap. Many historical events in the Realm of Magic's history crossed over to the Realm of Science as fairy tales, and vice versa. For instance, the events of Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty occurred at separate points in the timeline of the RoM and stuff like George Washington crossing the Delaware and the destruction of the Spanish Armada are pretty much bedtime stories. The aforementioned overlap happened when some residents of either reality crossed over into the other, which is how such folk tales were even known about in the first place.
Vespion, which is an alias, was originally from the RoS and, after mastering the art of magic, wanted to remake the RoM the way he wanted it to be: a world where the 1980's never ended.
You control a mute farm boy who just so happens to be the Chosen One to stop Vespion and is told to find Zelc. The thing is, Atlas placed a deadly spell on the sword to prevent people from stealing it. Before you can claim the blade, you have to find eight gems Atlas had given to each of Tobias' students, which are scattered across the world. Once united, the spell will be lifted and Zelc can be removed from its pedestal.
There is still a LOOOOONG way to go with this and I am going to need a bit of a hand at times.

SAMPLE ENEMIES
The following are a few enemy battlers I'd had commissioned by an awesome young artist called Rosettecapricorn, who sadly had to back out after these four were made due to a struggle with depression (Some of these were scaled down prior to my learning the standard size range of MV's battlers).

I had a gut feeling of what the default enemies would be, so I went with stuff I was pretty sure wouldn't be among them. I still have quite a bit to go, an alchemy of creatures derived from Greco-Roman mythology, the Arabian Nights, and Japanese folklore among others.
There will be more to come. I promise.
I hope you enjoyed and I hope to keep it going.
