    Synopsis.png

Join Guy (name changeable), a mute orphan, in a thrilling globe-trotting adventure to save the magic of a changing world. Along the way, he meets two enigmatic strangers who lead him on a race against time to prevent the Mana Engine, an ancient machine, from draining the world of its Mana (magic). Make new allies, learn the magic of the ancients, and push back against an expanding empire.

The world is changing rapidly with the advent of Mana Technology, leading to the emergence of a new global empire after the fall of several kingdoms. Using this newfound technology, the Hegelian Empire embarks on a quest for worldwide expansion and conquest. Their ultimate goal is to find the Luminal Vessel, a prophesied being with the ability to restore the Mana Engine to its complete state, thus granting the empire unlimited energy and power.

To uncover the secret of the Mana Engine and the Hegelian Empire's relentless pursuit of it, our protagonists embark on a journey around the world, gathering clues, conquering ancient dungeons, brewing potions, crafting weapons and armors, piloting airships, and making new allies all in an attempt to thwart, Hegelia. As they progress, they'll unlock abilities that were once only seen in the Arcani, an ancient mystical race with the power of magic.

Is the Mana Engine what everyone believes or is it something more malevolent than anyone could've imagined?

Mana Engine is a love letter to classic turn-based JRPGs such as Chrono Trigger, Suikoden, and Final Fantasy VI, while also being inspired by more modern classics like Sea of Stars and Chained Echoes, presented in a format borrowing from the SNES 16-bit era and PS1 32-bit era.

    Features.png
    Features
Classic ATB (Active Time Battle) turn-based combat with three different timing modes.
Wait - Battlers wait until turn completion
Semi Wait - Battlers wait while selecting an action on turn
Active - Battlers do NOT wait

Combat takes place dynamically on the map. Where enemy positioning matters.

Perform combo skills with two or more allies to unleash even more damage. The higher the friendship between two party members, the higher the damage dealt.

Friendship system - Strengthen the bond of your party to activate new skills and make others more powerful.

Maps - beautiful parallax maps with lighting. Option to turn off lights and use overlay instead.

Four difficulties to account for different playstyles.
Whimpy - ATB MODE: WAIT (ATB pauses on player turn), can flee from combat.
Easy - ATB MODE: WAIT. (ATB pauses on player turn)
Normal - ATB MODE: SEMI-WAIT (ATB pauses on player selection)
Hard - ATB MODE: ACTIVE (NO ATB pause)

Skill Tree - Choose what skills you and your allies learn. Skill points are distributed on level up and through completing certain tasks and quests.

Exploration - Explore the world to find potion and cooking ingredients, hidden places, fishing locations, ores and materials for crafting weapons and armor, stat scrolls that permanently increase STATS, towns, dungeons, and more.

Potion Brewing - Find recipes, gather ingredients, and brew potions that can heal and revive your party turning the tide of battle.

Weapon and Armor Crafting - Weapons and Armor too expensive? Craft your own weapons and armor from resources gathered from the environment and defeating enemies.

Cooking - Cooking food not only gives you a full recovery but also certain buffs that can give your allies an edge in combat. Careful though, some of the same ingredients also get used for brewing potions.

Fishing - Take a break from thwarting the empire and relax by fishing. Fishing locations are hidden across the game world.

Mini_Games - Try your luck at two different card mini-games that can reward you with money or items.

    Characters.png
    Guy
Actor_1.png Guy (Name Changeable) is a mute orphan who always longed of traveling the world and leading a life in service to others. After turning 20, he is forced to leave the orphanage and wants to join the Colonial Guard to protect his community. His plans are altered after meeting Luma and Nael during a festival in his hometown.
    Luma
Actor_3.png Luma is a 19 year old junior priestess of the Aurora Ascendancy, an ancient religion whose goals are to maintain balance and peace in the world, and preserve the knowledge of the Arcani. Since birth she has demonstrated an uncanny affinity for magic and healing. She has trained both her body and mind diligently to become more attuned with the natural flow of mana in the world. Due to a negative stigma about magic users, Luma has kept her abilities a secret and she feels guilt for not using her powers to help others to her fullest extent.
    Nael
Actor_2.png Nael is a 23 year old initiate to the Aurora Ascendancy. She joined the Ascendancy only a year ago but has quickly worked her way up through extreme discipline and her strong physical prowess. Little is known about her life before joining and she has refused several times to open up about it. Nael and Luma quickly hit it off when Nael joined the Ascendancy and have become good friends in the year they have spent together.
    Brand
Actor_4.png Brand is 22 year old who was raised in the same orphanage as Guy and left 2 years before Guy came of age. He was six years old when he lost both of his wealthy merchant parents to fighting against Hegelia's expansion into Greystone. He remembers all to well his previous life of luxury and has a chip on his shoulder about his situation in life. He steals indiscriminately and has a sour stand-offish disposition. While he and Guy were in the orphanage they were inseparable and considered themselves brothers. Brand always looked out for the mute Guy, and wouldn't let others belittle or make fun of him.

At least three more playable characters to be added.

    Setting.png
    Setting
Mana Engine takes place in the fictional world of Gaiaterra during an industrial revolution. Even though magic users are nearly nonexistent after humans revolted against the magic wielding proto-humans known as the Arcani, Mana machines and technology have changed the world for the better. Airships and mana powered steam trains have revolutionized travel and energy weapons have changed the face of warfare. While the rest of the world is struggling to adapt to these new technologies and ways of life, the Hegelian Empire is at the fore front of Mana technology after they discovered the mysterious Mana Engine buried in the earth and are leaps and bounds ahead of other nations in technological power. Believing themselves superior through their use of this new technology, Hegelia has committed to expanding its empire to the entire globe in the pretense of "better living for all".

  2. This looks really well put together. I’ll be looking forward to the demo.
  3. Count me in for the demo too!
  4. Thanks for the confidence boost!

So, I spent today making a game/Demo announcement trailer. I have very little experience editing videos and zero experience making video game trailers. I hope it doesn't suck too bad and any feedback is always appreciated. I had a lot of technical problems getting this to work. My potato computer did not like making videos.:LZYdizzy:

Edited main post to add trailer.
  5. The trailer showcases the game well and it looks amazing. The game looks really really good, the maps, the action, the sprites, like WOW! Well done.

My only complain is the 3d renderings for faces/busts. I'm not used to that.
  6. Watchin' this 'cuz of Guy's OUTRAGEOUS HAIR:kaoluv: Seriously, it's almost like a party of five. I'm kinda with @TESTOSTERONE on the busts, but the longer I look at them, the more I think they're kinda charming? It feels like 2004 in a good way! :wub
  7. Thanks so much @TESTOSTERONE & @alice_gristle

There is some dialogue/jokes about Guy's hair early in the game. There's also lore reasons revealed later in game as well (also a reason for him being mute other than a projection of the player). Honestly though, I've just always liked the generic spikey haired hero of old JRPGs.

I know the rendered busts aren't everyone's cup of tea, my plan is to commission an artist when the game is pretty much done, but they've kinda grown on me a little. I have few artists in mind too. Conversely, I feel it makes it stand out some from the multitude of anime-ish (is that a word?) character art commonly found in JRPGs. So, I dunno, I'm torn on it, but realistically that's a long way out from my current progress.

A modern take on the late 90s/early 00s is the vibe I'm aiming for, so it's nice to know I'm at least wondering on the right path.:)
  8. Looks interesting so far! I am excited to see how this develops! :kaoluv:
  9. Lol, played around with AI to get a feel how my characters would look in an anime style. It's not nightmare inducing but still pretty bad. It is however terribly inconsistent and I don't see how people use it for the games but to each their own.

Tried to do face sets as well and my god, their eyes were lopsided and faces looked like they were melting.:barf:
  10. Lots of updates:

(Biggest and knowing me, I'll just change it again)
Reverted Art style back to my original concepts. Still would like to get an artist for the final stuff. I feel this is more in line with the mood and vibe of the game and is more consistent with the sprites.
    Menu Update
    ManaEngine_Menu2.JPG

Added After Image and glowing effects on battlers during certain skills.
    After Image
    ComboWAfterImage.JPG

Added Day/Night System and some crafting ingredients and fish now re-spawn after either some time has passed or player sleeps at an inn or campfire. Have added some NPC and Monster behavior for different times of day.
    GIF
    TimeSys_Tiny.gif

Added Airship battles, sorry no pic atm. Still needs more refining.

Finally set costs for skill learn system and trying to balance. May scrap for a skill tree instead to better represent what unlocks what skill etc. Yanfly's skill learn system is easier and makes all the menus uniform but it lacks visual aid that a skill tree would provide in my opinion.
  11. Art style revert definitely one of the good things in this world! :kaoluv:
  12. Never done anything like this before and I'm new to editing videos, but I'm starting a dev log video series for Mana Engine.

  13. New map made, still have to put in the events and tweak a few things. Through the use of Hollywood magic, here's several hours of me parallax mapping Portside condensed into a few minutes.
  14. Very interesting, fellow Gimp user!:kaoluv: I've never parallax mapped, but I'm considerin' it for a game, and I'm learnin' things from yo video!
  15. Spent an absurd amount of time getting this to function right.

When an ally gets afflicted with a status, they now display different pixi filters. I made it into a hierarchy, so statuses with the worst effects are what the filter shows. As it gets removed it checks for the next one down the line and so on. I couldn't get the timing right in the FilterController plugin with Chrono Engine. It would work but not reliably or consistently, so I modified Mog's PixiFilter plugin to add a bunch of my own presets and some more filters. Got to learn a little bit about Pixi today.

Here's a video where I just added different status effects to consumables to demonstrate different effects.

  16. Did away with Yanfly's skill learn system for Felski's skill tree. I really like the added visual cues to know how skills unlock each other. Took a little more work than it should have because there's a few visual bugs in the skill tree plugin. Namely the faces are slightly cut off, so I had to fix that and I went ahead and edited to center the names at the bottom instead of the top left, and if you set the show custom background image to false, it doesn't show the description you put in the tree just the one from the database. Also for some reason Felski made the text codes only read capital letters and my database is full of text codes using lowercase, so that was tedious to go through and change.

  17. Do I read the skill trees correctly, you gotta learn all the skills in order to get the ultimate skill at the end?
  18. Negative, just complete one row and you have access to the end skills. For example on Guy, to unlock the last few skills you just need to have one of the three unlocked, Aerial Assault, Tornado, or Windbreaker. There's like 2 or 3 more skills just off the window.
