IMPORTANT! People that have been using Kaus's "Asteria Tileset" DO NOT USE IT!!

He charged money the first time too, for commercial usage. I know, because I made maps for one "company" who paid for his VX Ace icense (even after I told them not to use it because it contained rips; they simply did not care)

A lot of people are arguing whether they can still use parts of his tiles and resources if they aren't ALL proven to be stolen. Here is a very simple answer. Let me give you all an analogy.


I am buying 5 live lobsters ("resources") to make a fancy lobster dinner ("game") from a seafood market ("Kaus"). I notice, after he hands me the box of live lobsters, that there are two very clearly dead lobsters ("stolen work") in the tank mine just came from. Now, am I going to take those lobsters, walk away, and feed them to my guests? HELL NO, because there is clearly something wrong that lobsters died and were left in the tank!


So even though it's extremely time-consuming to start over and not use Kaus' tiles, you're basically saying,


"Even though I have no idea whether I am stealing and infringing upon someone's rights or not, it's inconvenient for me to start over, so I won't."


Until you have had your work stolen and your rights violated, it's hard to understand how much it matters. Remember though, that copyright infringement IS a crime. And copyright is not something that someone has to pay to register, or something that only a big company has. A creator owns the copyright to his/her original work the day s/he creates it, with no paperwork or other requirements. So when someone steals or knowingly uses stolen versions of art/other creative works from anyone, indie teenager or big company, it's all the same crime. It's just small indie creators don't have the resources to go after anyone.


SO JUST DON'T DO IT.

I do actually have a tree set heh (it's not the best though, but it was the first one I made featuring apple trees and oak ones and such). I am actually working on a cliff tileset currently too heh (to go with my lighthouse set. xD so I can say yes to that one too soon enough. But yeah I do plan on making other tree ones too since the first wasn't the best I could do tbh. I think the tree set is on this forum with my collection but I don't remember for sure or not. If it's not I'll update my collection with that as soon as I get the chance! (I actually have to update that with like 8 new files anyway lol)

@Sinnistar The work on this site you posted, it seems incomplete. are the resources from the other MV site that you're on more complete?

That's what I thought, too. TT_TT He outright disclosed his identity in the first post of the thread. I wasn't around the first time he did this but I've read up on it. I guess I was just too trusting and willing to give someone a second chance. :\ Now I feel stupid for not having reported him then, even if I just would've gotten a response saying he was legit. But it's like they say, hindsight is 20/20. I'm just glad I hadn't incorporated anything of his into my projects yet. 


I hope everyone who paid him gets their money back. It sounds like he was requesting that payments be sent as "personal" on Paypal? That's a red flag for me, since I'm part of another (very, very expensive) hobby and asking for personal payments is banned on most of the secondhand market. 


And I hope everyone who spent time on their maps with his material gets their time back. I know with writing, if you lose some of it, what you write the second time will be better because you've already thought through all of it; I'm not sure if that relates to mapping at all, but hopefully it does. I know y'all can make great maps even without his tiles! Personally, I'd recommend Cyanide's edits. I'll also second the recommendation of Avy's and PMaru's tiles. 

Who would do this?! My second MV game will have to stay on my computer, and mine only!

Just when I finish mapping the first section of my first proper project  ;_;  About 80% is Kaus. I guess I'll just start fresh. Absolutely gutted about the ice cave tiles though, as they were perfect for a large portion of my game. Steam says I've spent about 30 hours in MV, and I know most of those have been mapping (or idling). Only a fraction of time compared to a lot of you, but if it's this devastating to just lose that time, my deepest sympathies go out to people who have used his "work" more extensively.


What an absolute piece of poop. Hopefully everyone gets the refunds they deserve.

@Shaz I think Alexander was referring to the Overlay Plugin, I could be wrong though so don't quote me on it.


Speaking of Which the Plugin still hasn't been verified as Safe to use as of yet so a lot of people need to look into a new Overlay Plugin for their Parallax Mapping.

yeah, I wasn't aware he made plugins at all - I thought he'd confused Kaus with Khas.  Saw after I posted all the references to the overlay plugin.  Can't delete my own posts anymore :(

I'd like to know which tilesets Kaus made. I want to make 100% sure I'm not using any of 'his' stuff.


All forum pages containing his tilesets seems down. Right now I have a 'credits' document for my new game and Kaus is not on that list, so I can assume I'm not using any of his stuff. However my project will be commercial and I'd like to avoid any legal repercussions. Can anyone please post a link combining all his stolen work?


Or anyone is kind enough to play the exclusive alpha version of my game and confirm that it is not using any of his assets? Of course you'll get a free copy of the final product once release on Steam and elsewhere.

All of his Tilesets will have Kaus in the name of the sets.

His overlay plugin seem OK, but I'll write one of my own and make it compatible with his plugin commands, so you can just swap one for the other.


Can anybody send me a sample demo with his plugin working so I can check the compatibility?

As someone making their own tileset [and tending to look at preexisting tiles from other games when they have issues drawing specific things], stuff like this makes me very nervous. I get that stuff like poorly emulating specific FF6 tiles from memory isn't nearly as bad as this outright theft, but as someone who's only just begun to think about selling stuff it's not something I can immediately consider to be okay.

If anyone needs to reference his thread, please PM me and I will send you a copy. We can't make his thread public because we don't want to spread the tiles anymore.

Well even if the mods may knew. that doesn't means you should not pressed the report button. When more people pressed the report button and have the same report throughout, the mod will be much more concern of the situation and investigate immediately since now the community is aware something fishy is happening. Like other site where once many people report it they will knew.

This is disappointing. I rather enjoyed having some more tiles to work with in rpg maker mv, there isn't really any tiles around yet. I did think it was too good to be true at one point that this guy just banged out so many tiles in a week or two but I saw he had over 20 subscribers and no one said anything then so I bought it cause I wanted more tiles. I am fortunately one of the lucky ones who got a refund right away. Thank you @Celianna for finding this out and letting us know. It's really nice to have people like you in our community as it keeps us all safe from copyright infringement. :)

anyway thanks though. I was considering using the tileset too...

now the question is, why the user itself who supposed to be banned. currently looks like a regular user on his own profile page on the site and doesn't have any ban marks? someone should check the forum system right away since it looks like a bug and possibly make his ban actually public.
