I'm not sure, I myself have just seen it being used quite a bit (Maybe I watch too much anime). But thanks!

I've been further thinking on that idea for a single-character turn-based RPG. At this point I'm mainly curious why exactly they're hard to do right; IIRC, Fallout (the original) and its sequel were both turn-based and had particular emphasis on one character, even if you could pick up followers that were incidental to the plot.
Anyway, I've had a few rough refinements of the idea, based on the earlier feedback I got. What if...
- There are both bosses and non-bosses, but there are no random encounters, and the majority of enemies you fight are sentient enemies you actually have a reason to be fighting; completely incidental fights with blameless wildlife are kept to a minimum.
- In addition, fights with low-level mooks are only really a challenge in the early game, and get less frequent later on, as by that point your reputation as a strong fighter is great enough that weaker enemies will simply run away rather than risk your wrath. However, miniboss-level enemies become more common and will often fight you two- or three-on-one.
- The PC is a martial artist who excels at fighting bare-handed, and has the ability to learn new moves by copying them from certain enemies, usually bosses. In fact, this is the only way to learn new skills, as leveling up simply improves his stats. However, the moves that he learns are not exactly the same, and are in fact typically weaker than the version used by the enemy. He has the ability to 'refine' these skills by combining them with other skills, with varying results. Sort of like crafting, but with fighting techniques.
- Healing techniques and items do not instantly heal a set number of hit points; rather, they passively heal over a certain amount of time. Alternatively, all enemies as well as the PC will regenerate health over time, but still have access to healing items or techs if they need them.

I've been thinking of starting on a more "traditional" RPG for my VN-RPG series, Army of Tentacles. Initially, the project would be called Army of Tentacles: The Warriors of Fright. As the name implies, it would be a "retro" mixture of Final Fantasy 1 and Lovecraftian horror-comedy. It would take place outside the current VN series, but within continuity and timeline. My goal was to create a more traditional RPG; I love the AoT VN mechanics, but wanted to branch the series out.
I'm not very good with RPGM yet, but I have made some small prototype stuff - one even about the Bone Wars of the 1880s in Montana, USA. My goal for next week is to learn one new thing a day.
But I do know that, eventually, I will hire a small team. Probably as big if not bigger than my current game teams (5-10). -
Long ago, the world was a jumbled mess of darkness, light, and everything in between. There was no order. No balance. Just utter chaos. However, from the darkness, an entity emerged. This Entity, went by the name of Ark. They looked upon the chaos, and saw something wonderful could come from it. Taking out a book, they wrote one word, "stars". With that, stars appeared all around. Another word, "Gaia." Beneath him, a green expanse appeared, stretching on for what seemed like forever. More words they wrote. "Tree", "Sky", "Water", "Stone". Eventually, a whole world was created. A world of tall waterfalls, vast mountains, dark forests, and blustery clouds. The world was given it's own set of elements.
However, the world was still empty. It needed something to really give it life. While most would just pop a few life forms into existance and call it a day, Ark wanted more. They wanted to be able for everyone to have a story. So, they wrote one more word. "Destiny". And with that, they proceeded to bring into existence countless realms, each with their own set of people. Some would become soldiers. Others, powerful mages. A few even became world renowned thieves. All of them, had a 'destiny' for them. A road that their life was always going to follow. This, created order. As long as Destiny remained, the world would have order, and chaos would remain sealed.
One last thing they did, was create a small secluded world, barely connected to the one he just made. He called this realm, Palamecia. It would be the kingdom of the Transcendents. They tasked these beings to watch over the realm of Gaia, the vast world that had already been made. While being godlike, they still had to follow the rules of destiny though. Very few even realized they had one, that they were fated to go a certain way. For the longest time, Destiny kept the world in order, and Ark was able to stay hidden away, writing about the world he had created. However...nothing lasts forever...Destiny...is but a figmant of the mind...
What you just read is a bit of lore from the game I'm making. I'm sure it's not the best, but I tried my best. Feedback, and small things I could do to improve it are well appreciated. Also, this won't be all the backstory given. This is just the base of it. More lore and backstory is found out, and more pieces of a greater puzzle come into play. -
@LightDiviner
Not bad. I quite like the idea of the Gods of your setting setting out destinies for the inhabitants of their world for the express purpose of giving them interesting stories that make sense; gives lots of room for meta themes and commentaries, playing around with tropes, that sort of thing. And of course, if this is the case, then the prospect of destiny losing its power and everything becoming 'random' and 'unordered' - and therefore more like the real world - is also quite an interesting idea, as the inhabitants have to deal with things that don't seem to make sense because they don't fit the 'grand narrative' or whatever it's called. -
Yeah. My whole game is meant to be a traditional RPG, while throwing away several tropes they have created. Such as, "Hero of destiny must fight the lord of evil." Heck, the main characters are the "Hero" and "Villain" of the story. Switching between the two as they struggle to find a way to break away from their fate.@LightDiviner

and i am...
a beast master? what? i wasnt expecting beast master. is it just kuz i answered "sic my pets onto the burglar"? whatever, beast master is pretty cool. -
@Prez The thing about fallout though is that its a bit more on the CRPG tradition than the JRPG tradition (CRPG is a horrible genre name BTW) the combat there plays out a bit different than it would in a JRPG type system (another horrible genre name BTW). Still I think you're on the right track with your ideas. Also the mention of Fallout and martial artist takes my mind straight to Hokuto no Ken.
@Bryy Miller I have no idea what Army of Tentacles is, but good luck I suppose
@LightDiviner My only real question is how does this lore affect the world the player experiences. -
@trouble time i didnt even think to give the lizals an aztec theme.
-
I know, I may be misuderstanding and you're stating it in an "why didn't I think of that" way, but I'm talking about WHFB's Lizardmen being my favorite depiction of Lizardmen ever.@trouble time i didnt even think to give the lizals an aztec theme.

@LightDiviner My only real question is how does this lore affect the world the player experiences.
In fact, it does. All the NPC's have roles they abide by. Which is why they live the way they do. Everyone usually asks, "Why are all these guys soldiers if they're all dying from this demon lord." That's why. They all are destined to be knights. Everyone has that in my world. Some, your gonna have to help break away from that somehow. I won't spoil how it all works though. -
@LightDiviner Interesting, I look forward to learning more.

Hopefully I'll be able to give you guys more. ^^@LightDiviner Interesting, I look forward to learning more.

i know you meant that your favorite depiction of lizardmen was warhammer. i was just saying that i never thought to give them a theme since ive always just had them as a monster race. -
So originally this was part of another post i made but it seemed no one noticed, so im trying again.
Spoiler
So I decided to try again since this thread seems more populated now.
SynopsisThe above images are many major characters of the game. The game takes place almost entirely in a single city. One of the Grandmasters of the knights, Wrather, that protect this world has begun to see malefic signs and dreadful portents indicating that the very souls of all people on the planet are in peril. After retrieving the phylactery of a lich who made the same connections and confirming his suspicions. The world was being invaded, but not by force, by subversion. The invaders have corrupted the populace, twisting their desires and morals with their dark promises of power and pleasure. The powerful corrupting influence necessitates a more covert response to keep the entire invasion out of the public eye, leaving Wrather with one option. With a secret order, he puts together the most potent kill-team that has ever been assembled. Led by the demi-goddess Iii Irene Ionmi, kill-team Rainbow must root out six cults and cast down their demonic patrons before they can gather enough power to summon their infernal master, the Bale Princess.
As for the characters pictured.
CharactersTop Left: Laura Johanna Petra Lannerbeck: A Lich journalist who nearly discovered the invasion plans on her own before being killed atop the old hospital by her own girlfriend who had already fallen to temptation. Thankfully her phylactery was lost in the rubble. Through black market dealings, Wrather obtained her phylactery and revived her into a body intended for the High Matriarch of the Lich Court's throne guard. While she has less combat experience than the others, she's proven resistant corruption. She has an inquisitive nature, but her developed social skills and blood magic are what make her most valuable to the team, though her lecherous side does get her into trouble.
Top Middle: Merry Mayqueen: A mercenary from the Adene Union which was recently absorbed into the High Elven Kingdoms. Since the Adene she loved was gone she went into self imposed exile, the last of the Adene Hunters, the most well respected unit of the Adene Army. Since then she has worked along side the Veil Knight Order under Grandmaster Wrather's recommendation, originally as a marksmanship instructor, and later as part of Iii's personal war host. She's got an aggressive and abrasive personality when working, but she shows her softer side when dealing with Iii and likes to unwind at the bar whenever possible
Top Right: Dia: REDACTED
Bottom Left: Rue Ionmi: Iii's honor sister and fellow demi-goddess. Unlike Iii she knows her lineage, being descended from the goddess of wisdom and a homoncculus created from the cells of an ancient sorceror king. She is rejected by most other demi-gods due to her strange heritage, but she likes being alone studying magic anyway. She barely acknowledges anyone but Iii, who she has taken a liking to ever since they fought together, and Wrather who is likely the greatest mortal sorcerer to have ever lived. While incredibly intelligent, Rue is also very literal minded, and due to her disregard for personal interaction have left her with next to no social skills
Bottom Middle and Right: Iii Irene Ionmi: The hero of our story and a demi-goddess of unknown origin. She was found, raised, and trained by Grandmaster Wrather and has fought alongside him ever since she reached "adulthood" at three years old. Now at eighteen she's fought in several battles all across the globe. Though she is a peerless warrior, Iii is a kind and gentle soul. She's not done much besides fight and train in her life, so she's a bit naiive and immature even for her age. Still, Grandmaster Wrather believes she's the greatest champion any of the mortal races could ask for. -
why was dia redacted?
-
Well because Dia's special, that and I typed her bio out but decided it'd be more interesting if one of the characters bios was left blank and another was only alluded to. That's why it say REDACTED instead of UNKNOWN.why was dia redacted?

So, i have a lot of free time lately and i decided it would be fun to start working on a project. I do have experience with RPG maker but i have never made a complete game, so i really didn't know where to start. I asked a few friends that are familiar with game design and they told me i should start with something very small and simple. After all my goal is not to make money or a great revolutionary game but to learn a few things about game dev. Also i am only one guy and his laptop, with no money at all, so there is not much i can do in such a little period of time.
I thought about it a lot and an idea came to mind. What is the most simple type of story, that is also kind of fun? The answer to that is simple. A guy with superhuman abilities takes out another guy with superhuman abilities to save someone else. It is a very cliche trope, but i believe it can be fun if expanded upon.
So now i want to ask, what do you think about it? Even though my goal is to learn, i would also like to make a fun game. Do you think people would be interested in playing something that to me seems a bit redundant?
Now i also want to ask something else but it is a little bit off-topic. Like i said i am just a regular student with a laptop and no money. I think it would be fun to make my own assets, since in the process i would learn a little about art. Can this be done? Or do i need to have past experience in art?
Thank you all in advace, and forgive me for my ignorance. -
@Silveryon I'd say you don't really need past experience to just make your own assets. Everyone starts somewhere.
-
@Silveryon If you've never made a complete game, then it's smart to start with a relatively simple story like you're planning. So don't worry too much about it not be original and instead focus on making it fun to play. Maybe focus on one major mechanic that you want to implement, just to keep the project from growing too large for you to actually finish.
As for making your own assets, trouble time is right that you don't need any art experience, but it sure can help. I'd suggest not trying to make everything by yourself at first, and instead start with learning how to edit the defaults. It'll help you learn how the assets work in the engine and keep the graphics from overwhelming you, since it can take a lot of time to make all that you need.
