  1. Unlike chests, I use nodes in my project which spawn all over the game (reset daily in game) and you have to complete a mini-game to get the item.

  3. Here's some shots of a still-unfinished town. It's the town right before a water-elemental temple dungeon. Any ideas on town names?

  4. @DJ990J Thanks for the suggestions! I'm actually going to take the town more Chinese-inspired (NPCs in hanfu, xianxia-style weapons and monsters etc), so the Japanese names wouldn't work. I like something like 'water blossom town,' though! I think I'll call it Lakeblossom. :LZSjoy:

So, I'm not sure about town names but I really like the arrangement of the structures in your screenshots. I think it all looks really good, and it reminds me of Yafutoma in Skies of Arcadia. :)
  6. MZ_NES.png

Having some fun with the recent 8-bit resource pack release. I grew up playing the NES games that this looks to have been based off of, so I think it's a really endearing resource pack because of that.
  7. @Kenen, oh wow, such FF2-3 feels...! :kaocry:Portraits look super good, too! :wub
  8. I've been tackling making 48x48 tiles and then learning the mapping system in MZ. Here is my very first MZ map. It is a town of scholars. The Inn and stable, the Town Guards House and the town store are all in a separated area of the town - the locals don't want such mundane things in the main part.

It's big, so in a spoiler.

Sadly, no events showing, so no doors, chimney smoke, NPCs etc. So here is a screen shot with those, plus a closer range so you can see the details more easily.

    What do people think?
  9. that is a nice map! if you use the ground-tile nearby the door as a way around the houses and if you put some more flowers around the trees then it will be much more nice i think! and you could put a dirt-tile under the trees aswell. you know which one i mean? its the one with grass around.

That tile is specifically to tell the player that this is the entrance to the house. It's not important to doors facing down, but you can also enter houses from the side and the top, and the player needs a distinctive sign where that happens.

Yes, a bit more decoration would help, it's something that I'll be doing at the polishing stage. I didn't want to do it now, as I might still make significant changes and I don't want to have to do something twice.
  11. ah, that is one way too. :)

ps: btw... what is that for a tileset? the houses looks so nice!

pps: after a closer look the door irritates me a little bit. maybe its because of the black metal-thingies and its height.

It's based on an old XP tileset I have, which I don't think is still available, but edited to within an inch of its life and, of necessity, with huge changes. e.g. the original roof design would not tile seamlessly over 48x48, so I had to do entirely new ones. Being XP, the original was highly pixelated, so everything had to be redone in the more painterly style of later engines. Also it needed a lot of new tiles as well. Other items are taken from a variety of sources or have been constructed by me.

The height is because I'm using tall sprites. The default size doors is too small, IMO, even for chibi sprities, as their heads always hit the top and (again, IMO) that looks ridiculous.

The black metal hinges are, I think, a matter of individual taste. I don't think they look too bad but doors are something I always end up remaking more than once, so it is one of the things which will likely change before the end once I've hit on a consistent style. My objective at this stage is to get the basics down as there as so many things to get in place e.g. non-default SEs, non-default icon set, new battlebacks etc. For my way of working, if I try and get one thing 100% before moving on, I get tired of it and it slows me down as it saps my motivation. It's a balance between that and not having so much that needs re-doing that I end up with double the work load.
  13. So this is the room I just finished tonight. It's the bedroom of a fairly odd six year old girl. Bit more mature for her age then what's normal. She's the secondary main character in the story.

The story takes place in a world with super humans, and they're pretty much everywhere. Normal humans are rare. (My Hero Acidemia follows a similar theme.) This lil girl, Lilly is a moderately powerful telepath and the first quarter to half of the game takes place in her imagination. I mean it's the "real world" but what the player sees for the most part is fueled by her imagination, if that makes sense.

So with that in mind, I wanted the room to seem fantastical. But worry that it could get annoying with the lighting. The room is going to be the characters version of the Justice Hall, Avengers Compound... Cartman's basement. A place between quests for the character to talk and what not.

At about the half way point give or take, the story switches from fantastical to the real world, as she starts to lose her imagination as she ages. At that point the room would change to something more... normal.

Anyway, as I said, curious about thoughts.

Before I forget, this animation is the only real thing happening in this room VentBlink2.gif its on the wall to the left of the beds. Foreshadowing, I hear it's important.. and kinda fun. >.>

  15. Here's a little Behind-The-Scenes video! This one is an underground bunker where some dastardly pantomime villainy is thriving!
  16. @thepsyche Gosh, I can't wait for this game! Everything you post here gets me so hyped! Looks great. You're so good at lighting!

Honey, that sounds dreadful!:kaocry:Is ya gonna imply that people lose their imagination as they grow older? Anyway, yo map looks nice! :wub I appreciate the wild azo dyes, altho they kinda hurt my eyes... Neat little posters, too!

Corridor carpet looks weird tho, can we do without? The way walls work, now it looks like it's only on one side of the corridor... :kaoswt:

@thepsyche, cute hideout! :wub Whatcha growin' there, lavender? How ya gettin' enough light tho? Or is they just storage boxes? Anyway, really cool details, I love the glass bottles! :kaoluv: Palette works great, altho personally I'm not into the "everything is brown" style!

I forgot about the walls. The bottom edge of the carpet needs to be extended so it's not visible. Easy enough thing to fix.

The imagination part is probably not worded correctly. Kids tend to lose the visual side of the imagination as they age. That's not say people cant day dream or anything when older but it generally cant override reality the way it can with kids.

As she is in the start of the game, if she imagines a unicorn running through a forest, everyone around her would also see a unicorn running through a forest. Later on that goes away, so I suppose maybe the better way to say it, is that she gains more control as she ages.
  19. @lokiie1984, oh I get it now honey! Good explanation! Gonna spy this thread wid my li'l eye in case you post more screenshots! :wub
