Where to find music/tilesets for free?

I've tried to look around a bit, maybe I didn't go deep enough, but I can't find what I need. Also, I apologize in advance if this is the wrong place to put this, I'm new and confused about where to put things.

I decided to do a little project over the school year. I want to make it dark and a little sad, but I'm unsure of where to find the proper music and tilesets. The main thing I need is music, but tilesets would be nice too. If it's not possible to get music for free, that's alright. Also, note that the game is for non-commercial use, and I have no money to spend on these things.

For graphical resources Granny's Lists are always a good place to start.  You can find her list for resources on this site here  In her signature are links to lots of other lists.

For music, just look in the sub-forum 'General Resources'.  There are literally hundreds and hundreds of free tracks.  You will just have to spend a bit of time sifting through to find what you want.

You will also find a vast range of music in the REStaff Release sub-forum.

Free resources here are pretty much listed under the resources thread. Here are a couple of the links that you can find from the main board :

You will have to go through each thread one by one and check out what they have as the threads cater to individuals.

Terms for use in commercial or non-commercial projects will usually be stated near the beginning of their thread.

If it isn't clear, they will normally state from where you can contact them (either by PM or email).

Most of these resource pages are for posting things that you've made yourself. The resource request thread is for finding things or asking for a few things to be made for you. This one belongs in Resource Requests, I'll move it there for you. If you're confused about where to put something, reading the stickies can help a lot.


Finding music for a non-commercial game is going to be really easy, the only problem you'll have is too many options. Most of the music can be found in the General Resources section and the threads should all be tagged (hopefully).


We'll need a little more information to be able to suggest the right tiles for you. The mood you described could be done with any tileset with the proper lighting or tints. Is there anything else you require in a good tileset?

As people have also mentioned the Restaff Releases are a great place to get resources and we release new ones every so many months (a new one will be coming soon!).

Other than that take a look through the resource threads people have mentioned and you're sure to find a lot of resources you'll like so make sure you have a notepad file ready so that you can credit everybody appropriately :)
