What are parts of game developing do you enjoy ? What are of game developing do you hate ?
For example:
I like playtesting because at least I play a game.
Part that I strongly dislike is when I have put data into database and put files into a correct folder.
I create this thread to be non-serious If you want to share your thoughts with this community, I would be appreciated. If you would like to tell me about your individual experience good or bad, it would be enlightened for me.

I love:
- Designing battle systems.
- Programming battle systems.
- Composing game music (especially the epic ones).
- Design an ability system.
- Program the ability system.
- Create the general storyline
- Creating the lore.
I hate:
- Writing the story, meaning writing every dialogues (I love writing the general story, but hate to write every scene in the game)
- Eventing and doing quests.
- Doing the tilesets. I don't create them, but I do edit some RTPs and some free resources on the forum and make my own tilesets.
- Database management, especially creating every items and equips.
- Creating descriptions for every items.
Things I don't particularly like, but also don't hate doing:
- Mapping.
- Video recording for promotion.
- 3d modeling for animation (having a poor CGI video at the beginning of the game is the JRPG trademark).
- Creating characters. -
Yay for me:
> Animation!
> Designing a gameplay concept
> Proofing concept of the designed gameplay
> Character dialogues
> Designing a playable character (drawing, deciding the skill set, and the likes)
> Designing encounter / bosses
> Battle balancing
> World building
>Randomly posting my progress report
Nay for me:
> Menu scripting
> Eventing labour (e.g, transfer map)
> Tutorial
> Grand plot / storyline
> Pixeling (spriting, editing tileset, etc)
> Grammar
> Mapping
> Detailing the map (interact-able objects, etc)
> Making trailers
Neutral:
> Database management
> BGM creation / picking from stocks
> Making cutscene -
I like everything else but cutscene making and just making things react when the player talks to them. I'll detail that a bit more later.
I also really like making someone else's game for them as long as the direction is clear and I have creative freedom. The collaboration process can be pretty fun. As long as I don't have to do the graphics.
As for the nay...
I use a lot of custom graphics and it can take me from 3 days to 1 week and at the very worse, 3 months, to finish a single area of the game. And I tried all things I find time saving such as using pathfinding to move units instead, creating custom tools to workaround MV limitations and that stuff. I'm just glad @KanaX made the spriter plugin so we can just shortcut a lot of our animations cuz the lag was the worst.
Another thing I just recently discovered that I can use copy character (character.copyPosition(character)) which can also copy direction as well and I could've just used that on followers to save myself some headache.
I also really hate making custom graphics for my games in general. It takes forever and I have insane standards for my own works and I never ever finish them unless my friends force me to release it and tell me it's fine x 10000. -
Debugging.
:frown: -
+ World building!
+Inventing and then creating some very complex structure, working hard on it, and then watching all parts coming together to create the fully functional whole fulfilling the vision you had in your head. These are probably the most satisfying moments.
+Creating or editing graphics can be fun at times. However, as far as the faces go, I think I'll take the lazier route next time using MV:s face generator with lot of editing instead of drawing all of them from the scratch. It just takes too long. I don't like MV too much, to be honest, but the face generator is vastly superior to VxAce's.
-I don't like creating complex puzzles too much because of the workload and repeated testings, even though it doesn't stop me from doing them at times.
-Sometimes, the very beginning of starting a new map can be daunting, especially if it's some big city. You just know how long it's gonna take to get it done.
-Creating new battle animations. It's boring and time consuming even if you were to use animation graphics from RTP in one form or the other. Actually, I don't like creating animations in general too much. Repetitive and everything just has to be so well-placed. -
This thread made me realize I hate game development >.>
No, but honestly, the part I enjoy the most is having the product finished and ready for other people to play :D I guess I just enjoy making my own worlds as I see fit even when it's a lot of hard (and often boring) work. It's all worth it in the end. -
What I dislike
Making/modifying graphics. Creating art in general. ASDFGJKASGJ
It's not that I hate art, it's just that it's such a damned slow process. Yet, I don't like the idea of prematurely throwing any (and possibly even all) profits I might make at an artist, so I'm stuck dealing with it anyway.
Plus, having someone else do the art makes it feel less like that art is mine to do with as I please.
What I like
Making the items, spells, weapons, armor, events, maps, and pretty much everything else. -
Likes: Developer giving credits to the intelligence of its main target players and sticking to his/her guns.
Dislikes: Nerfing patches and dream or time travels that makes a whole story arc never had happened or character just all forget about the plot at end game! -
Things I Love:
Mapping
Making art
Eventing cutscenes
Things I Hate:
Database stuff
Accidentally focusing so much on making art I forget about my game
Moving the characters around during cutscenes -
Nice to see you again and thank you for stopping by. It is good that talking about it and many of us here can be related: stressful experience, enjoyable experience, and boring experience.
@Elissiaro and @Labyrinthine, thank you for your inputs and nice to meet you. -
Like:
-Almost anything involving the database - item/class/skill creation, etc
-creating the storyline and characters
-love coming up with cutscenes that convey a specific emotion like anger, humor and loss
Dislike:
-mapping in general. I don't have a very good eye for mapping and don't particularly enjoy the process
-some parts of cutscenes - implementing dialogue and such is fun, but implementing movement routes can be a real slog sometimes
Edit: Forgot my biggest dislike of all: Playtesting! It's not so bad sometimes, and can even be rewarding when I feel emotionally impacted by a scene even though I made it and I know exactly how it goes - but in general playtesting, to me, feels like a chore--a very, very important chore that I'll do many, many times for each game I make--but a chore nonetheless.
Those are the big ones for me. -
I love:
*Writing the story! I love to plan out what happens in my game beforehand! I just open my writing app and type away all that comes to my head ^^
*Character designing! I love to design male characters more Tho lol
*Making the items in the database.
*Getting plugins, thinking how to use them.
*Making title graphics, menu backgrounds etc.
*Decorating the game
I hate:
*typing the text messages in game
*making tilesets
*organizing files in game directory
*Making maps
*planning battles, skills etc. -
This could be a fun way to see who is compatible with whom. (This isn't an offer to join you, don't PM me.)
I love:
- Creating tilesets
- Figuring out the overall plot
- Creating deep characters that enhance the story with their presence
- Doing something difficult and seeing it work exactly how I wanted
- Writing all the little stupid dialogue and interaction text boxes that don't really matter
- Dialogue in general actually
- Getting really nitpicky about the art looking exactly right
- Seeing my artwork move and be interacted with
- Doing silly effects that just adds to the visual atmosphere
- Getting everything just right
- Making someone else's existing artwork look prettier or more appropriate for the game
- Making a UI design look nice
- Drawing pretty much anything
- putting flats in an image
- learning
- trying new things
- anything with direct and immediate results (I do this, and this happens. Cooool!)
- discussing really cool deep things with others in the process of making the game better
- Adding shading to my designs
- creating fonts
- low choice, highly repetitive tasks like alphabetizing something. It can be pretty zen and I can think about other things for a while and feel productive
- Mapping. Actually, to break it down further, I hate sorting out a basic layout, but once that's done I love every last bit of mapping. I could happily spend hours just making one small part look amazing.
- Pretty much anything that could be considered programming in any way, shape, or form
- Coming up with a good battle system
- choosing colors (not bad at it, just don't find it fun)
- anything business related
- Coming up with a good UI design
- stupidly repetitive tasks with no choice involved at all. Is this the computer age or not?
- keeping track of too many things. If I can't keep it all in my head at once I will not remember it.
- all things paperwork
- math
- sad stories (recognize the need and can do them well enough, but I hate them)
- horror
- high rating stuff (violence, gore, swearing, sexual content, ect.)
- having no one to talk to when I'm on a roll
- being responsible for something (holdover from being sick so much, you can't meet expectations)
- doing something that shows no result for a long time
- Monster designs. I can do cute alright but I can't do epic or scary or ugly well and I don't enjoy doing them or looking closely at the existing references. Basically I can do pets but not monsters.
- Coming up with little trinkets and details to make a room feel lived in. I keep drawing a blank after adding the big stuff. My personal style is a bit austere, so it's not something I personally have much of in my life.
- Figuring out deep lore. I'll either over invest and want to make too much story (basically write a brand new game), or I won't be invested at all and can't come up with anything that matters.
- composition, both for character art, title screens, battlebacks. I have an easier time obsessing about the parts than making it work as a whole.
- Coming up with a good puzzle
- Organizing my time
- Being consistent
- Animation (need some extra practice and patience and less perfectionism)
- Sci-fi, Steampunk, and EGL styles.
- Villain designs. They just look too relatable or nice or something, not properly awful.
- Composing - I suspect it would be a love/hate relationship because I love creating but music is very mathematical and can be too exact for my tastes. I think I would struggle to make it work the way I want in my low math/organic/extremely perfectionistic style of creating.
- Playtesting - I'm probably pretty good at it, as long as I can actually play the game. It doesn't seem like it'd be any different than critiquing art.
- Cutscenes - I worry about this. I'm guessing that it's going to be like programming but I'll need it to get the art and emotions right. I will probably end up hating it and not wanting to let anyone else do it.
