What do I use to make Strategy RPGs?

  1. Yeah... obvious question.

Basically, I'm talking about something either along the lines of Bahamut Lagoon [you have small parties] or Super Robot Wars [one character per unit]. Something that's also divided in levels rather than in a normal RPG progression.

So... what applies best here? Should I get IG Maker, or RPG Maker can be used for this?
  2. please do not assume that everyone has played the same games you did - I never even heard of those games.

Please describe the mechanic you call "strategy" in words, not by comparison to gamesthat only a part of your audience has heard of (and less have played them), then we can point you to possible solutions.
  3. Didn't expect the genre to be THAT unknown, but alright.

Strategy RPGs are sort of like wargames in that each stage works like chess. You have multiple units, with their advantages on certain terrains and locations, and both sides take their turns moving them over the battlefield. The RPG part comes in how you can actually level up your units, which increases their health and powers, and in certain cases you can also adjust stats through spending money or items. These upgrades can also lead to further gameplay effects, so for instance, you can increase one unit's range or reach during their turn.

A case where the latter does not happen is the Fire Emblem series.

I've actually seen something like this happen in RPG Maker so I know it's possible, but I also learned of IG Maker recently which is why I'm curious which one would be better.

For the other examples I shared...

Bahamut Lagoon [your units are grouped into small parties and can all contribute to the battle one way or another]

Super Robot Wars [each unit is a single character, but they can perform team attacks]

Of course, I'm not asking to do something as awesome-looking as either of these - those have their own engines which are designed for such animations. Even something as minimal as that first one is okay. I just want to know if IG Maker would be better for it.
  4. I know that Super Robot Wars, it's a japanese game.
First sorry if what I describe below is wrong,
There's a map like battlefield specially designed for the battle system, and there are enemy units and player units, then a tactical strategy battle is what will happen with turn based system. They have to move in the battlefield to reach each other so they can attack or cast skill to their foes. basically moving in battlefield and attacking use stamina, each skill use different stamina, each unit has different stamina capacity, so here it comes the strategy thingy.
Bascially you want a different battle system then, but not only that you want a semi-real time game progression(am I right?), but I don't know the answer, because I don't know if there a script for a system like that(but I think there should be any).
  5. Bahamut Lagoon is also a Japanese game, found only translated on emulator.  I played it.  It plays a lot like Fire Emblem.
  6. Gubid's engine is your best bet for ace. There's also Tomoaky if you're using VX.
