If you know how to make good maps, but not have an idea on how parallax mapping works, then this tutorial is for you. It doesn't show how to make great maps, that has been shown well already by other tutorials here and there. But I found out that it was somewhat intimmidatating for me to set a project up to use Parallaxed maps. When I made it, I found out that things are VERY simple. If you want to use bigger maps than a certain dimension, you will just have to use a few scripts. Works the same it just becomes a little more complicated.
Here is the tutorial in pdf format:

For further help, here are some links that will send you to great tutorials you can read/watch after reding this basic one.
Remember. This tutorial is about how things work, so you can understand what is going on.

Hi Dreadshadow,
I would like to download your Parallax-Tutorial, but I solely got an error (error 500) from dropbox.

I can't believe this is happening, I mean the link is not broken but since you never know, here is an alternative.
It gets to my nerves when something that is supposed to work correct doesn't. -
Hi Dreadshadow,
thank you for the fast reply.
Seems it was a problem of dropbox itself, that I could not download your tutorial; now I got it.
I hope I'll understand your explanations to parallax mapping. -
Can't wait to see your feedback. (and maybe your first map).Hi Dreadshadow,
thank you for the fast reply.

Remember. I emphasizred on the FIRST steps.
What you will be able to do will be very basic.
Small map parallaxing.
To do bigger maps, you must use scripts but there are tutorials for such mapping already by others. ;)
You can find the references on the OP. -
Me too! It gets me annoyed so often XDI can't believe this is happening, I mean the link is not broken but since you never know, here is an alternative.

So nice to be redirected to that tread from STEAM. BTW thank-you for the past lesson.
PS: I am onto your normal set bits by bits hope it'll be cool! -
Long time no chat, but it seems I am back on my knees.

This was very informative! I followed along while doing it on Ace, but I still have a question for anyone that can answer.
While adding the ground layer you set the passibility for it, but... I'm having a hard time knowing what can be passable when the overlay is mainly trees and such. So, for the ground layer, is it okay for it to be a flat combined map of both the upper and lower layer to use as a guide, but then just put the overlay on top? I'd assume since the upper layer is going to perfectly match up with the bottom picture otherwise, then it would be okay to do that.
Or, put the guide picture down and then replace it with the ground only picture... that's something else I didn't think of that I thought might work, because changing the picture wouldn't reset the passibility we already set down on the map, right?
I hope that wasn't confusing to read. I'm not 100% certain about the vocab used for this. -
You can make a map for bottom layer as a full map (top and bottom), but in order to show things above the player, you must add another picture as the upper layer.
If you got a full map shown, you might forget to add something on the upper layer. Other than that, you got no problem at all. -
Thank you very much!

I hate being short of likes! (then again, fortunately this isn't facebook!)

@Dimitris do you have a copy of that pdf? I accidentally deleted my last copy, without having a backup.
