  1. Hi everyone,

My name is Gabriel. I am a professional Unity developer and game designer. I would like to share an unfinished game, created in RPG Maker 2000 that I have been working on for more than 10 years. I say 10 years, yet the original start date goes all the way back to 2005. However, I have taken multi year breaks while working on it. For this reason, I feel it is more accurate to say 10+ years, rather than 20.

    So about the game....

The Game is called Void. It is an RPG puzzle game made, in RPG maker 2000, about a young man named Mark, who is trying to save the world from collapsing into itself. It has a large cast of characters, and a story that has many plot twits. There are a lot of puzzle elements, mixed with traditional RPG mechanics.

To help the game run on modern computers I am including the open source Easy RPG Player project in the zip file.

    Game Features:
    • More than 20 hours of gameplay
    • 12 Dungeons
    • Themed Dungeons mechanics such as switching between fire and ice, conveyer belts, mine cart rides, and time travel
    • 10 Mini games
    • 50+ puzzle segments across the game
    • Large explorable world with several optional areas to explore
    • Hundreds of pages worth of written text
    • Complex story with multiple plot twists
    • Starts as a Medieval Fantasy and becomes sci-fi

I have bigger plans for this game in the future. When I started it, I barely knew how to program. I managed to make RPG maker 2000 do many things that I don't think the creators of RPG maker 2000 planned for. Now knowing Unity, and being a professional Unity programmer for more than 8 years, I am planning to port the game over to the Unity engine by writing a converter program, and then modernizing it.

For transparency. In this current version, I have created more than 40 original musical compositions, and there are many pieces of pixel art that I have done myself. However, I didn't create all the art and music. The game also uses several RPG Maker 2000 music, sprites and sound effects. Several of the character graphics were made with online Charas character generator. This will change in a future version. I plan to bring in talent help make sure all the assets are original, replace the battle system with a custom one, among many other quality of life improvements.

All that said, this is the first time I am showing this project to the public. I poured thousands of hours into it, and I really hope you will give it a try, and you will enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed making it. If you have any feedback please let me know. Also the Easy RPG Player may introduce a few errors, as it is still under development. If so, feel free to replace it with the RM2K RPG_RT file. It's in the main folder. You will have to remove the underscore in front of it, and make sure to add an _ in front of the current RT file.

To play the game, download the zip, unzip it and simply double click on the short cut titled "Void" in the folder. Feel free to move the short cut somewhere else on the computer if desired.

    Thank you everyone!

We are definitely some kindred spirits (ʘ‿ʘ)'

Looks good, I like the RPG 2k/2k3 vibe, probably because of the sentiment.

Cool, I hope you enjoy playing it. Nice to meet a fellow RPG creator. :)

If you like, feel free to dm me your game / link to form post. :D
  4. I played your game for the forum’s Web Feedback Festival. I recognize the effort it takes to get a game in a playable state and released for people to try, so if you don’t care to read constructive criticism, all of my thoughts are in spoilers. If you do read it, I hope some of it provides you useful thoughts when working on this or future projects.

    Spoiler
Your game zip includes a shortcut you made for yourself that won’t work on other people’s computers. People who are less tech-savvy may think the game is broken. Also, it appears to include your full name, if you care about that.

Then, inside the actual game folder, there are three executables (and another shortcut), so it’s really not clear how to run the game. I looked at the properties of the non-functional shortcut outside the game folder, and presumed it’s RPG_RT.exe - but there’s really no reason for those others to be in there at all.

I played as far as the second half of the cave, after getting teleported out of the room. It took over 20 minutes to get to actual gameplay with battles, which feels quite long.

At the beginning of the game, you see the first map and hear the music start before the opening cutscene starts. You should, instead, put the player start location on a blank map and transfer while the screen is faded out.

The king’s sprite is missing the black outline on some parts. Notably, when he turns to face upward, his collar blends in with the color and texture of the floor, making it look like he has no neck and his head is floating above his shoulders.

Oreus’ sprite also looks weird - there’s some dark blue shape by his face. But it’s strange because it’s not in the same position when he’s facing up as when he’s facing right, so it bobs up and down. I also have no idea what it’s supposed to be, so it looks like there’s this blue flower attached to the end of his nose.

Oh! I see when he’s facing down that it’s supposed to be his staff. That is really not visually obvious in the other directions.

The dialogue is formatted very oddly in the message window. You consistently insert line breaks far before the actual end of the line, so there’s all this empty space on the right side of the window, which looks odd.

Then, the one time you don’t do that is after the temple sinks and there’s a scene with blue dots in the background - the word “beginning” is cut off by the right edge of the window. (then thrice more during the conversation with Chauncer)

Maps are rather empty-looking. For how large they are, and how much empty space there is, it would be nice to break up the floor tiles more often with some scatter terrain or details.

Even things like houses are kind of bizarrely empty - there are houses that have a table with chairs, a bench, and one bureau. Where does anyone cook? Sleep?

You don’t appear to be using a script to handle your two-tile-tall characters. For example, if you walk up against a bed from below it, the top of your head vanishes underneath.

In battle, it looks odd for the enemies to have skill messages saying “the enemy” - for example, “Frozen Wisper [sic] attacks the enemy” makes me think it’s attacking itself.

When your actors dodge an attack, it plays the hit SE instead of the dodge SE that enemies play.

It’s really not visually obvious that the crooked brown line on the wall in the cave is something you can climb up.

Something is wrong in the move route when you’re hopping over the first stone in the cave. The sprite sometimes goes way too high and there appears to be an extra jump after you jump off the stone.

The language has a lot of errors. Not even getting into subtleties of grammar, there are tons of typos and blatantly misspelled words.

Ellipses should only have three dots in them. You often have four or five.

Some of the graphical effects are well done, like the sinking of the temple and the dot scene zooming into the planet, but the game would be a lot more interesting if you worked on the empty maps and put some basic effort into the script - even pasting all the text into Microsoft Word or Google Docs and running spell check would be a big improvement.

I appreciate the feedback, yeah the game definitely needs some more work. Yikes I didn't realize that I exposed my name, though I am not too worried about it. Considering some of the other issues, I will see about uploading it to itch.io

Yeah I think the early part especially needs some tlc. It's based on what I did when I was 16, though I did considerable updates to it later on. Some of the later parts I made in my late 20s and early 30s. It has much more detail and complexity to it.
