Hello there, I have a question regarding the commercial usage of RPG Maker.
I am aware of the fact that you can create a game with RM and then sell that game, but say, If somebody made a movie with RM, meaning the person set up a completely self-playing game
and recorded that, could he/she sell the video? Same goes for posters: If somebody made a poster of a battle scene or large map, would it be legal to sell that? (Under the assumption
that person only used RTP assets and has a legal copy of the engine in question)
I'd greatly appreciate it if somebody with official knowledge could answer it.
(Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere or I missed it when reading the legal stuff.)
Using RPG Maker for commercial purposes other than games

Basing from an old discussion, posters whose main purpose is to sell the art (which is the poster), is a big NO...
For videos, there are (according to people who replied when I asked if it's fine to take a vid of a cinematic made in RM) vids of full cinematics (I prefer to call it that way, same as how we called it back on wc3) in YT. I'm just not sure if selling them is okay. -
So if a posters main goal would be to promote/sell the game it would be okay?
(As in collectors edition extra or merchandise from an e-shop) -
If the poster would be sold, I do think it will always count as selling the art... At least that's how the discussion went last time. It's a poster, you won't be printing it and giving it away unless it's for the art. Even if it's a promotion material, it would still be the art that will be seen and would take center stage not the game. Most people won't get that poster anyway if it doesn't have a good art in it.
PS: This is all from what I remember since the last time this topic was discussed, which was around more than half a year ago I think. -
i have another question:
what about making a website background or some images for a website (not talking about single icons) with the mapping tool and the rtp, is that legal? -
The license for RTP (and many of the other resource packs) only covers its use in a project created with RPG Maker software. We have, in some cases, extended the use of graphics/sound as something that can be used in promotional material for a game created with RPG Maker -- things like banners, screenshots, videos, etc. But this use is limited and treated on a case-by-case basis.
There isn't a blanket answer I can give that would cover all use that's allowed or isn't allowed. The only really, truly safe use is if RTP is only used in an RPG Maker program -- and this means that your project needs to be distributed as a game file, not a video, comic or series of pictures that rely on other programs. -
Thanks for the reply, Lunarea. In that case, I'll send a PM to... where would I send such a PM? It's neither Sales nor Technical support, is it?
