Usage of engine assets

  1. Hi there :rock-right:

I purchased RPG Maker VX Ace quite a few years back and have only just gotten around to getting a chance to really use it.

I read through the EULA for RPG Maker VX Ace, but it doesn't say anything about whether you can use the default resources in your own project for commercial use or not. In fact the EULA didn't mention anything about the subject at all, unless I missed something.

Could someone please clarify this for me, preferably with links supporting the stance on this?

    Thanks
  2. Yes you can use the default assets for commercial games, as long as you legally own the engine from which the assets come from.
  3. If you are making the game in Ace, then yes you can use the default resources. If you are making the game in another RPG Maker and you legally own both makers (have purchased them both), then you can use the resources from one in the other. If you are making your game in another engine completely (like Unity), then you cannot use the RPG Maker resources or any edits of those resources.

It does not matter whether your game is commercial or free - the terms are the same for all RPG Maker resources.

Rather than me providing links supporting this, you could do a search yourself to find them, as that's exactly what I'd have to do. Mods/admins have confirmed the above in a number of the existing threads asking the same question.
  4. Hi Shaz, thanks for the reply.

That's the thing, I read the EULA and it doesn't say anything about this type of thing.

I did do a search, but it seems to just be the word of the people. Kind of like those posts you see around the internet with twelve year old kids giving legal advice. Not saying this is the case here (and am not trying to offend anyone, far from it), but I am just not seeing it in any of the documentation / EULA's that come with the engine itself.
  5. This is the official Degica forum. Degica staff look after the forum. If we say something that isn't true, they'll come and correct it pronto.

@Archeia @Celianna can you please provide an "official" answer on this? Would it be worth doing up a bit of a summary of all the "can I use ABC resource for XYZ purpose", including edits, cross-engine use, commercial vs free, encryption, etc and pinning it somewhere? It's a pretty common question and it'd be good if we had a single thread we could point people to.

The EULA for the RTP and the Engine are separate. When you install the RTP for the first time it comes with its own EULA. https://www.rpgmakerweb.com/download/additional/run-time-packages

    Hi Archeia,

Sorry, I am not up to speed with the terminology yet. RTP's are the assets that get installed if I understand correctly?

Where do the EULA's for the installed RTP's reside?

    Thanks again everyone :)
  7. RTP = Run Time Package. They are the graphics provided with RPG Maker. The EULA is on the page I linked you. IF you check the RTP folder, it will have an RTP-Readme.txt or something like that.
ENTERBRAIN grants to Licensee a non-exclusive, non-assignable, fee-free license to use the RTP SOFTWARE only for the purpose to play the game created and distributed by RPG MAKER VX Ace users who shall complete the registration procedure.
  8. Cool, thanks for that!
