Unexpected File Format error

  1. Hi everyone. I am currently unable to load my game into RPGMaker VX Ace. It says unexpected File Format. I'm not sure what to do and I am horribly distressed as you might imagine. Does anyone possess the technical wisdom to provide guidance?

    Thank you in advance.

Update: I am able to load other games. Just not the one I'm working on.
  2. Sounds like a corrupted database file. Try making a new project and copying over files from /Data one at a time until you find which file is corrupted, then delete it from the original project. You'll lose something, but hopefully it's just a map.
  3. Lone Wolf, I copied every single file from the /Data folder over and the new project still loads...

And shows my maps, scripts, switches, and everything!!

In fact, I've copied the Audio, Graphics, Movies, and System folders too without issue. It must be one of the other files? I'll keep looking. But no matter what, you just made my day!

Update: I have copied over everything in the folder EXCEPT the two files named "Game" and everything still works. It has something to do with one of those files. I am very, very, very happy! Thank you!
  4. You're welcome.

I get that error a lot for some reason. Fortunately, the root project files are completely useless (unless working with a custom RTP), so as long as you keep a fully working copy of the Data directory you should be fine if it happens again.
  5. The error usually happens because RPG Maker was still open and running when your computer crashed in the middle of it. It's the most common way to get errors like these. So make back-ups a lot!
