It seems the program doesnt work the same way as Fes or VX Ace does, I placed an event on my town well to go to a new map screen (bottom of well) and signpost to tell visitors to the town, welcome. When play testing it, interacting with these items does nothing: no msg, no map transfer. So i thought maybe if i remove the tiles for the well and signpost I could use the tile from within the events to make it work right, like picking a character to interact with an npc, but still nothing works, I have tried settings for bumping into it as well as setting it to interact with the object, and nothing.
advice? is the mechanics different for MV?

No, it should not be different. Can you post a screenshot of your well or sign event?

Make sure to use same as player on the event priority. The default is below players for those events, so you have to manually change it.

when I placed the event in front of the signpost on the ground it worked, but I shouldn't have to do that, right? I am new to RPG Maker

I recently got MV, VX Ace cuz of the sale on steam, and got Fes on 3ds, never had to worry about priority before.Make sure to use same as player on the event priority. Yes, use same as characters. And ACE works the same way on that, so you actually did have to worry about it before. Go test it if you doubt it, I just did.
Also please edit your previous post next time instead of posting 2x in a row. -
If you have an event that with no image, it automatically sets it to "Below Character". If you set the image to a character, it automatically sets it to "Same As Character". Interestingly enough, if you set it to a tileset image, it automatically goes back to "Below Character".
I've just tested this for Ace and MV. It works the same for both. -
