So, one of the things I was able to do during my hiatus from RM was write. A lot of people here know I take part inNaNoWriMo and want to be a novelist. But, for a while, I felt like I couldn't do justice to my own stories and characters, but still wanted to write. So, instead, I used someone else's characters.
That's right-- I wrote fanfic.
And not just any fanfic-- *crossover AU fanfic.*
I took characters from the Disney canon and dropped them into the universe of Harry Potter. With only a few exceptions, I'm using only human/humanoid characters and had to come up with last names (sometimes first names) for characters who didn't haveone in canon. It's a work in progress, but I hope you guys like it.

Turns out...I'm a fanboy

Nothing wrong with writing fanfic. Sometimes it's good to use other works with prestablished characters or settings as practice so you can hop right into the writing and not worry about "originality". As long as you don't think your a god, what you wrote is 1000X better then the original writing or, the worst case, claim it as your own it's fine.

Haha, thanks for the support, Uzuki. //rmwforums.s3.amazonaws.com/emoticons/default_wink.gif It isn't that original stories are a problem for me, it was just that, at that time, I wasn't *feeling* it, yknow? So, I looked to a game I played with some friends, where we placed characters into Hogwarts houses, and turned it into a story. I'm sure my OCs will cooperate soon, but I am having fun doing this.
Also, just updated with a new chapter:

Interesting, we're quite different when it comes to the subject of fanfiction. I'm more comfortable in writing my own characters, since I know them better. When I made an attempt at fanfiction I was so afraid that I would misrepresent the characters, that I scrapped the project. There were other reasons, but that certainly was a factor.
It's great that you're having fun, it always helps the motivation. Fanfiction is driven by passion. It's creative, a good way to improve in many different areas, and a way for authors to share their work. Just a shame that people have given it a bad reputation.
I wish you good luck and keep writing. -
Thanks :) I plan on it. It's actually been a helpful exercise. Something about playing with someone else's characters and setting gets your imagination working in new ways.

Just added a seventh chapter, if anyone's interested:

nothing wrong with fanfics. :thumbsup-left: I started out with fanfics when I was an aspiring novelist. once I finally *lived life* a little bit more (learning how to do a *lot* of stuff, not all illegal tho lolz) and learned all I could about the process (tropes, genre, voice, etc), I finally improved as a writer and have several books published. cool beans, bro and good job. :thumbsup-right:

Thanks, Kau!
Thing is, I'm discovering more and more that "fanfiction" is sort of a non-genre. There really isn't any difference between fanfiction and fiction, except for money. Fanfiction authors may be taking something that someone else came up with as the building blocks, but they're still telling their own stories. They can't sell them, unless Disney or Nintendo or Marvel, or whoever, wants to make a licensing deal--but they write the stories because it's something they love. I've heard a lot of people say things like, "Nurrr, just write your own stories, nurrrr, come up with your own stuff, nurrr," (yes, making that exact sound). But look at all the films and novels directly citing Rome & Juliet or Jane Eyre as inspiration. Not a single one of them is called a fanwork, largely because money is being made from it, thus, somehow, legitimizing it as original (even if it isn't, really--look at Scary Movie, or really, anything starring Marlon Wayons, for instance).
AAAAAAAnyway....
I've posted another chapter for those who are interested:
