I've been using the old RPG Maker XP version 1.04 from years ago because the transparent colour in the editor actually works. (Also a more transparent DRM.) From what I can tell, everyone seems to have issues with the transparency in the editor in 1.05, where the colour used for alpha areas cannot be changed and is some weird purple, or red, or something else.
I have this issue myself in my own copy of the 1.05 non-Steam release.
In effort to investigate this (and high-dpi support, though there's a way around that), I tried downloading the demo of the japanese version. This gave me 1.05b, and in it, the transparency works fine.
(It also gave me an OGG soundtrack and 16 sample games? The OGGs even have loop points, despite even 1.05b not supporting them.)
Now unless I'm a right fool and the Steam version of RMXP is already fixed, I thought this would be a good place to inform someone on staff that, hey, maybe that bug can be fixed? :v I don't really want to pay for XP like a third time to check its version on Steam, though. (And I can't download the one on RMW to double-check its current version, as I just get a blank page.)

The Steam version does indeed not have this issue, although its version is listed as 1.05a. Same as the stand-alone version from here. Weirdly enough that one still has the issue. (I had to redownload last XP last month.)
