Things that nicely surprised you.

  1. Hi everyone,

I was thinking about some things and I realized that very often I catch myself saying ''Man, that looks so stupid. There's no way it's any good'' and then I come to regret it as it actually turns out to be awesome. Given how many times that happened, I've decided to say no to this and I'm doing my best to not prejudge things before actually checking them out.  ;)

At the same time I though that it might be a nice idea for a thread, given all this negative things that are going on both in the real world and in the internet... something positive for a change.  :)

I guess I'll start. Anyway, as I've said, I've done this countless times, but one or two examples won't hurt.

One would be ''modern'' cartoons. I've grown up watching the old classic cartoons on Cartoon Network - Powerpuff girls, Dexter's Laboratory, Scooby Doo and stuff. Recently as I was staying at my grandparents house with my younger brother I was just going through all the channels as we had nothing better to do and I ran into Cartoon Network. At first I was like ''oh man, look at how dumb those new cartoons are. Nothing like the good old classics'', but then out of curiosity I started watching. There still were some pretty bad ones, but then I ran into Adventure Time and Regular Show and, what can I say, as a 21 year old man I actually enjoyed them.

I've heard of Adventure Time before, but I always dismissed it as a kid's show. Yes, there were some pretty silly episodes, but in general it was just so, hmm, cheerful for the lack of a better word for it. The setting is so wonderfully absurd and the characters are just so ridiculous that it was just a breath of fresh air. The jokes were usually really funny and, in general, I really liked it.

Then came Regular Show and, what can I say, I just love it. It's probably one of my favorite shows of all time and I'm saying this as someone who has watched countless movies, animes and TV series - this is definitely somewhere up there at the top. Again, maybe it has to do something with how ridiculous the setting is, but I was just shocked at how ''mature'' it was for a Cartoon Network cartoon. I'm not even sure what the target demographic of that show is, as it's just littered with references to oldschool games, 90s movies, innuendos and some pretty mature things, while being so ridiculously funny that I can't help but smile. Honestly though, I'd recommend it to anyone who doesn't take themselves too seriously.

In the end, all I can say is don't do the same mistake as I often do - check things out before dismissing them, unless you're really sure. I I do think that some things just won't work for you, but many things are worth are least giving a shot.  ;)

So, what are some of the things that nicely surprised you? Do you catch yourself dismissing things because of your 1st impressions often or do you usually give them a shot 1st?
  2. How bad would it be if I said kids; or family in general for that matter. A little over a decade ago I was a self-proclaimed asexual misanthrope...it's really interesting how drastically a person can change given the right circumstances.

Anime is a more recent example, I dismissed it in youth and young adulthood as just being perverted cartoons. Then I married an anime freak...and she eventually got me hooked.
  3. That's true. They always say one taste is all that it will take.
