  1. The Opening of the World Title.png

This is a remake of my original project, "The Opening of the World," which I made in 2013 using RPGMAKER VXACE. Unfortunately, I lost my work on that one, but you can still see screenshots! Here is the link: https://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/inde...-opening-of-the-world-choose-your-side.15651/

    Introduction

"The Opening of the World" is an action-adventure and slice-of-life RPG where your choices have a real impact! In Chapter 1, you play Curran and his brother Keeran in a magical fantasy world on their first day back at school. Attend lessons with friends Rahna and Kareem, hang out after school, and help the people of Catalpa. Be cautious with your choices, as they can lead to consequences like detention. Decide whether to team up with friends for quests or go solo. You can also interact with almost every object in the game and explore Catalpa to your heart's content!

    Gameplay

In The Opening of the World, your choices matter!

There are no random battle encounters, just timed battle events and puzzles.

There are three layers of quests.

Main Quest, Side Quests and Hidden Quests.

To progress to the next chapter, the Main Quests must be completed. Side Quests are optional but need to be completed before finishing the chapter. You will receive a warning before the chapter ends, so you won't miss out on completing any Side Quests.

Finally, hidden quests are not explicitly listed in the quest log. You have to find and complete these quests based on instructions in the game or by paying attention to the dialogue. These hidden quests are not tied to specific chapters so that they can be completed at your own pace. Side quests and hidden quests are great ways to assist the people of Catalpa in obtaining valuable items and earning extra experience!

    Story

Curran, Keeran, Rahna and Kareem are in their penultimate year at Catalpa Academy. Each character faces unique challenges and backgrounds. As friends, they aim to support one another and find adventure wherever they go. As you explore Catalpa, you may begin to notice that this magical land is not as peaceful as it seems to be. You will soon learn about the harsh governing of the land, the backdrop violence that Catalpa emerged from and a deep-rooted issue at the heart of Curran and Keeran's family home.

The story attempts to maintain a comedic slice-of-life style above the seriousness that slowly emerges. Chapter 1 is simply the introduction to this arc, so it steers more toward humorous dialogue.

    Future

"The Opening of the World" is an ambitious project with five loosely planned arcs, each with five chapters. However, this is just the dream. I am not getting carried away right now, as this is a hobby. Chapter 1 has been in production since 2019. I have been using RPGMAKER since 2011. The near future focus is to start work on Chapter 2. I am hoping Chapter 2 isn't going to take too long, as most assets are done. I am then going to focus on chapter by chapter.

    How to play!

    HTML5 link!
    Click run game!

    - Left-click to select.
    - Right-click to open the menu or cancel.
    - Hold shift to run

-If you're using a desktop PC or laptop, use the keyboard direction arrows. Press the Esc button to go back.

    - To toggle the in-game map of Catalpa, you must press the page-down button. You must press the [Fn] button + page down button on notebook laptops.

I have attempted an HTML5 upload. Despite the game's many parallax mapping and parallel events, the upload seems successful. There is some lag when entering or leaving maps, so for the best experience, I recommend downloading the game. Nevertheless, by uploading HTML5, I hope more people can access my awesome game!

Click here to download it for Windows.

    Mobile Devices

Mobile devices should be able to play the HTML5 game in the browser. However, I noticed that iOS Safari doesn't play sound. I recommend using the Google Chrome app instead of Safari, which will fix the audio issue on Apple devices.

The main drawback for Mobile users is that unless your phone has a keyboard option, you cannot toggle the in-game map of Catalpa. Usually, this is done by pressing the page-down button. However, the map is not necessary to finish the Chapter.

    Glitches/Bugs

If you find any glitches or bugs, game-breaking or otherwise, please post them in the comments! I am keen to work on these and provide the best user experience!

Thank you, and I hope you enjoy my game!

I would greatly appreciate your sharing this game and rating it. I made it using the RPGMAKERMV engine. I am also keen to respond to feedback, so please comment below! I will gladly get back to you and take your feedback on board!

  2. Hello! I played the web version of your first chapter and enjoyed it! I thought I would share my feedback and thoughts on it.

I really like how relaxing the gameplay was for this, so I could put all my focus on the story. Not to say there was no gameplay though! I had a good time exploring the maps to find ingredients for potions and such. Speaking of collecting, I did notice that when collecting water from the well, the character mentions that the bucket is full, however looking at the inventory reveals that the bucket never fills, it just adds a water item to the inventory. No problem with this mechanic at all, however it may be more accurate to have the character say "We've collected some water!". If you did want to make it so the bucket does go full and cannot be used again until emptied, you could make a separate 'filled bucket' item and just remove the empty bucket while that is in your inventory. Along the topic of items, I did notice that there were times when I was given an item for a quest and then supposedly used the item, however it was still in my inventory after use. I appreciated the use of the quest system though! Admittedly I had put down the game for a couple of days and when I got back to it I wasn't sure where I left off. Thankfully the quest system helped put me back on track!
I did love the story and am wondering where it will go. I don't fully remember the full beginning as its been a while, but I do remember that it was accompanied by some humor which I always am for. "Your disturbing my slumber, fool" got a good laugh out of me! I did notice in this dialogue and in others there were some spelling and grammatical mistakes. I will not list them all here, but there were a couple of 'your' instead of 'you're' and 'can you here me?' instead of 'can you hear me?'. There were also a couple of times where spacing was missing between words like 'thequiz'. These should be simple to fix, though I know it might take a while based off the sheer amount of content you had packed in just chapter 1! I was not expecting to have spent over an hour playing, but I had a blast. I hope you continue and get that second chapter out!

I will put some extra notes and bugs I encountered in the spoiler below:
    Spoiler
    • Loved how there was so much dialogue for almost every item in the houses, was a really cool way to learn more about the world and those that live there!
    • Liked the touch of the cabinet actually changing sprite to being opened when looking at it. I did notice that the sprite does shift when this happens, so make sure the sprite is well aligned when organizing the sprite sheet. It is very minor though.
    • I thought the blurred effect for the houses below when up in the mountain was a really cool idea! The houses did still seem not that far down from where we were, so I think you could push the perspective effect a bit further
    • Amazing attention to detail with the fireplace in Curran and Keeran's house being put out in the morning
    • I did find it a bit odd that Mum's room didn't have a bed.
    • I like that the game warns you when doing an action will progress the game forward
    • After history class, the top right prefect says to 'get to lesson' even though lessons are over and the combat teacher has no dialogue if you enter his classroom after history class.
    • I went to the market after the Lord of Cataplan and Mother cutscene and I was met with double Keeran! (he must know some high level magic!)
    • When in the cellar with the rat battle, I was very curious what would happen if I did win the fight. I was pleasantly surprised to see that you took that possibility into account! Keeran is a winner in my eyes. XD
After the night passes, the spot where Mum was standing here, cannot be walked on.

    Thank you for the adventure!
I hope this is ok, but I made a little fanart of Keeran, he's definitely my favorite.

Wow, your review and comments absolutely made my day! I'm so thrilled you enjoyed the game and especially loved the Keeran fan art! It means the world to me that you took the time to play and share your thoughts – this is the first time someone's given my game such thoughtful feedback, and it's incredibly encouraging. Thank you so, so much! I really appreciate you pointing out the bugs too. I'll definitely look into those.

I've already started working on Chapter 2 and am excited to release it when it's ready! I am unsure how long Chapter 2 will take to finish, but I will begin posting on the devlogs on itch.io when I feel substantial progress has been made. My motivation has had its ups and downs since the initial release last summer, but today, your review has given me a huge boost. Seriously, thank you again for your wonderful support!
  4. I'm so happy that it has inspired you!
Honestly, I'll have to play again to see the different outcomes, especially since I took such a big break between my playthroughs.
You have a great start of the game here and I'm excited for you to continue your work on it.
