  1. The Legend of Dobby Mick

    Created by Neon Black

The great white whale. The strong brute that no one dare cross. How long will he reign king of the seas?

    Introduction:

This is a silly little rpg/fishing hybrid game I threw together in the span of about a week for the contest. I'm just silly like that. The premise is simple. Catch fish and sell them to buy better gear and catch bigger fish. Build up your skill and reputation as a fisherman before taking on the great white whale, Dobby Mick!

    Features:

    Spoiler
    • 20 different fish to catch, including the legendary monster, Dobby Mick!
    • 4 different areas to fish in, each with their own unique layout and different fish.
    • A random number generator that determines the size of the fish; fish can be literally any size!
    • A random weather generator post game means there's a different type of weather every day!
    How to play:

    • While at a fishing spot, press and hold the confirm key to prepare your rod. Release the key to cast it.
    • After casting, press the confirm key to reel in the bait. Hold left or right while reeling in the bait to move the bait left and right.
    • After getting a bit, the tension box will appear. The top bar is the tension, the bottom far is the fish's position.
    • Press confirm to increase the tension on the line and reel the fish in. Press shift to decrease the tension on the line. If the tension on the line is too great, the line will snap.
    • Press the left or right arrow keys to follow the fish's position. If you try to reel in while not in the same position as the fish, you put more than normal tension on the line and may snap it.
    • Reel a fish back to the shore to catch it, then take it back to town to sell it!

Neither link requires the RTP! If you get any issue with a lost resource (there don't seem to be any missing resources) let me know so I can fix it.

Normal version link. This one has support for xbox controllers, or rather, it has vibrations while fishing! Just a gimmick really.... DLL is in the DLL folder in case you do not have it.

No gamepad link. In case you have issues with the other link. This version has the gamepad script (mostly) disabled.

    Tips and tricks:

    Spoiler
    • If your line snaps, you lose your bait and your line, so be sure to be careful with expensive kinds of lines.
    • After casting out, just wait. Fish won't bite if the lure is moving. Sometimes you may get a bit right away, but other times it may take a while.
    • Don't button mash. Carefully increase your tension on the line to pull the fish in. Don't let your tension meet the fish's tension or the line will snap.
    • Bigger fish pull harder on the line. Try getting a better line before going after bigger fish.
    • A fish's strength will decrease over time. Increase the tension you have on the line to tire the fish out faster and make it easier to catch. Some really big fish may need to be tired out before being caught.
    • Different fish have a higher chance of being found in different parts of the fishing spot. If you can't find the fish you want, search for it in a different spot in the water.
    • Certain fish cannot be caught without special conditions. In order to change the types of fish that can be caught, use a bait related to the area, or wait for it to rain in that area.
EDIT: Slight change. Added Munny to the menu. Did some slight balance changes to the late game stuff. Also adjusted how fish are displayed. They'll now appear slightly smaller, but that will prevent the later fish from being so huge.

EDIT2: Added a no gamepad version of the game for those getting errors with xinput1_3.dll. Also fixed a bug related to end game. And finally, changed the credits roll a little bit just for graphical reasons. Nothing special.
  2. This was fun! I wish I had more time because I would keep on playing. The interfaces and menus are really well presented and easy to navigate. (The only thing I would suggest is a way to see how much munny you have on the menu so you don't have to go into the store each time to find how much you have) And the game play did a wonderful job of leaving you with a sense of accomplishment that kept you going.

When my first spider silk line snapped and I realized I had to make 200munny again my heart sank, but at the same time I was filled with a determined rage to catch the little fish that did it and repurchase my precious line. That's a lovely feeling in a game.

I'm going to keep on playing another day because I really want to find and catch the legendary Dobby Mick, but I wanted to pop in and let you know the look and feel of this game are very appealing. Wonderful work!

    Good luck in the contest!
  3. I'd love to give this a go, but I get errors on both links 3:

Glad you like it! I was hoping other people would like it as much as I did while making it. Honestly once I had the majority of fishing done I sat there for 3 hours just fishing at the river before making any of the other areas.

Your suggestion here I had considered adding, but just sorta forgot shortly after every time I thought of it.... Don't worry, I updated it now and added this. Enjoy!

Odd. Not sure what's happening. Anywhere else you'd like me to upload it?

Also, UPDATE: Adjusted some end game mechanics to make the ocean area slightly harder, as well as the "post game" fish. Adjusted a value that helps display the fish. This makes fish slightly smaller, but it will prevent later fish from being so huge. And finally, added Munny to the menu so you can see it without entering the menu. To keep your save game, just copy "Data.sv" over to the next project. Enjoy!

Ah...on the No RTP link, I get a gamepad script error 3; Oh the version with RTP it says I need the RTP to play it @w@
  6. This is pretty entertaining. I even managed to catch Dobby Mick! However, after I did so, I was unable to move for some reason. It fixed itself after I closed and reopened it though. Minor annoyance, because of the fact the one action is assigned to shift, I occasionally had the sticky keys message pop up mid-game a couple times.

[Edit] Nevermind about the shift key. I could just change the keyboard layout, drrrrrr.

Sorry, forgot to package the required DLL to play it. :x The game was going to have different controls while playing with an xbox controller, but I was strapped for time so I scrapped them and in my haste forgot to include the DLL or disable the script entirely. Just download a copy of that DLL and install it to fix everything up.... Sorry again about that....

As for the rtp thing... I disabled the rtp in the no rtp version, but required the wrong rtp in the other version (got the name of the rtp from a VX project instead of an ace project. Oops). That was fixed when I did the update.

Odd. Honestly I only had the chance to test it once or twice due to time constraints. I do have about 2.5 second of wait on a black screen. You sure it wasn't part of that? Either way, I'll replay it and try to replicate the error. Glad to know you enjoyed it by the way!
  8. Now I get a different error sayin the DLL isn't installed right >w<

Hang on, I'll upload a version with the script fully disabled. Sorry about that again.

EDIT: Added a no RTP, no DLL version of the game. Sorry. All that trouble just for a few gimmicky little extras. >_>

EDIT 2: Also found Racheal's mentioned issue. It occurs in town after the credits roll. Not entirely sure what causes it, but going to fix it shortly. For now, just exit and re-enter the game to fix the issue. Thanks for the feedback guys!

It was actually after I talked to the friend. She mentioned it was raining at the pond, walked off, and I just stood there. I could open my menu, but not move.

Yup, found it and fixed it already. Not sure what caused it entirely, but I'm pretty sure I fixed it anyway.

As for the raining, I really hope that element works (well the rain itself does, I got to test that). What I mean is, I hope it really does cycle weather ever day. I only got 2 days to test it. Weather is determined by the PC's clock date, so everyone who's clock is set to the current date will have the same weather. Sadly, I only had 2 days to test this and yesterday was the exact same weather.... Anyway, here's the weathers and their effects.

Overcast: Increases the chances to catch bigger fish of the same species. This means the random number generator will pick bigger numbers for fish size.

Drizzle/Sprinkle: Increases the chance to find "better" fish. Same effect as bait and compounds with bait. Use bait during a drizzle is the only way to catch the 5th fish in each area.

Raining: Same effect as Drizzle and Overcast combined, but not as common as Drizzle or overcast.

Storm: Increases the chance to get better fish by 2, in other words, the same effect as bait and drizzle combined. Also compounds with bait to greatly increase the chances of finding better fish. ALSO has the effects of overcast.

Like I said, the weather effects themselves work, but the random weather system hasn't been "tested" more than just one or two days.... Might increase the chance to get a storm, though, or each area's weather separate. Also, the storm during the "final boss" scene has no effect on anything. Dobby Mick can only be caught at normal size at this point.

TL;DR: WEATHER!! And fix for the end game glitch found. Check the main post in a few moments (there will only be 2 links when it's up).

EDIT: New links added. Check the top post.
  12. Thanks very much! It's working fine now :3 Having lots of fun catching dem fishes >:3

Ahah!! I just caught Dobby Mick! With child's rod, fishing wire and cheese x3

    *noms*
