The Chains That Bound Me is a story rich game that has the elements of an rpg genre. You'll explore the city of Florie in the lower district, a place where the guards oppresses the working people. Death is common and starving people will ask you for food. You will play as Arridaios, one of the leading members of the rebellion. People look up to you and hope that their revolt will succeed. But Arridaios is reluctant in helping the people. He wants to live in what little peace he has. Things don't go the way as planned. Arridaios discovers that his friend went missing. And along the way in finding him, he sees something he dreads. Something he never wants to see again. Far worse than the oppression of King Leuric.

    • Arridaios - The main Character of The Chains That Bound Me. Cold and reluctant to help Valentina with her rebellion, he remains minimalist and doesn't get into too much trouble.

    • Valentina - A tomboy. Leader of the Rebellion. And has some serious past history with Arridaios. Conversation will always be awkward between them.

    • Mark - Abuses his power in keeping things in check. He isn't afraid to pull the trigger on you. You're dispensable. That's how he sees it.

This game is low funding meaning I've been doing all the programming, art, music, story, marketing, you name it. Besides the exception of the character portraits which is done by Sphenops. Lots of thanks to her. The game logo is designed by Leonardohendo.

I've published an alpha demo because I needed some exposure to see if this game would do great or not, and if I should continue or not. This game is so big in story that I'm regretting even designing this big feat of a game! I can't tell you how many hours this completed game will have or if it'll even be completed, but I can tell you that this alpha demo has about 2-4hours of game play. Which is big, yeah I know. You can imagine how many more hours there will be if this game does finish.

There are a lot of twists in this game. You'll be surprised at every corner. And as you play on, there will be a lot of questions that will leave you like, "what?! I can't believe - what happens next?"

I've had a few people play and tested my game and they enjoyed the story. And some of them gave me great feedback. There were only minors problems this game faced like exploration felt like a must, there's no point in leveling, and sometimes I felt lost on where to go next.

This was done on purpose because of the lack of time I had in polishing this demo. That's why I call it the alpha demo. I had to publish this game mostly because I'm applying to a game competition called game development world competition. And the date of the last submission is the end of September.

So I made the mode easy for this game. Just because I wanted you to enjoy the story and not be too nit picky on the little flaws the game has.

I've published another game long ago called the beast named eliza which did very good. I always love to see the lets play. It's probably why I develop video games hahaha...

I'm hoping I do get to see some lets play for this alpha demo. Maybe I'll hear some nice inputs on how to improve the game. I always like to hear those. After all, as a game developer, this game is somewhat my baby lol...

Anyways, this is my temporary good bye because I'm so burnt out, I need a month off from this game. I think my vision has gone worse since I spent like 8 months glued to my PC. I LOVE GAME DEV!!!

  2. Updated the game! Though this might be a little late to tell it to you guys hahah...
  3. Glad you're sticking with it! Will try it out.
  4. @Jayje Thank you so much!
  5. Not sure what you mean by "an unconditional environment", or when you say it's an "under budget" game. There's like, zero information on the game itself, either. I don't even know what genre it is, what mechanics you've got, and no idea how it's actually going to play. That's pretty important if you want folk to give this a look, your gameplay section needs to be expanded a lot until it's more than some really basic controls. I think you could also do with a bit more information on the setting, you mention a rebellion as being silly but I didn't even know there was a rebellion. Finally, there are a few grammatical errors you'll want to get ironed out ("so does the dangers", "become unrest") and I would have someone proofread the game just in case.
  6. @onipunk Hey, thank you for the feedback! I will make all these corrections but right now, I'll update this page once IGMC 2018 is over. The game demo itself is going through a polish and once that is done, this page will look better! For now, I'm being very vague because there's not much mechanics going on and the controls are just that. It's an RPG. The story isn't fleshed out and only the beginning is told so that is why I'm being so in cohesive; it's subject to change. I don't want to hype things up and I want players to just go in with no expectations and to just enjoy the game.
I appreciate your time that you looked over this and to give me these very useful tips! I will surely apply them!
  7. Agreed, I would have someone look over the script once you have it all figured out. There were some minor grammatical errors in the demo. Even the title isn't proper - it should be "The Chains That Bound Me."

I was really confused about where to go and what to do a lot of the time. When the MC says "I should do x", it would help to say where that event happens, especially since the map is pretty large and intricate.

The art is great and I like the custom sprites. The music is fitting. I like that most of the NPCs had flavor text.

    Minor gripes in the demo:
    - the HP bar in the corner during cutscenes is distracting
    - the text bar stretches the whole resolution, but the text itself is centered, which is off-putting
  8. Thank you for the feedback @sheffield
Omg you are right! The title of my page doesn't have that T.
The Hp bar is a bit distracting but I did make a plugin to remove that when cut scenes happens in my demo.
As for the wide text bar and the text centering, I planned on adding custom portraits on the left so that's why it's a bit off putting for now haha.

Stay stune for the polished demo because big changes will happen. New art assets, more small event cut scenes, more subtle dialogue, and a subtle direction on where to go.
Your feedback was very good and it is helping me a lot!
  9. Another update!
  10. Updated the story! And added a twitter for you guys, if interested in the game, to follow me! Plus other exciting games I'm working on. Will still keep this post updated for major changes in the game. That means free demos in the future!
  11. I updated my Game! And I would love some feedback too! Even better, some letsplay!
  12. This is a really interesting game! I will be sure play the demo and give you some feedback after. The interesting aspect of this game, is that sounds a bit different from the 'mainstream'-overall games from RPG Maker. Worth of taking notice.
I loved the trailer as well xD

Best of luck ~ I'll be watching your project
  13. @Kvothe Thanks for the nice comments! You should follow me on twitter. I update there much for frequently than this forum post!
  14. Oh, the portraits and concept look absolutely delightful!! I was very pleased to see a MacOS download for the demo too. Just gave it a download, and I'll write down my thoughts and critique as I go! I needed something to justify further schoolwork procrastination tonight anyway, haha. :)

{e} Unfortunately, the MacOS demo doesn't work. :(
It gives me the error message "The application "Game" can't be opened."
If it helps at all for troubleshooting, my laptop is MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015), and I'm using macOS Mojave Version 10.14.6.
  15. @katharine Oh wow, I'm going to fix this up right away! Hopefully I can get this fixed by tonight! I'll let you know when it works!
  16. So I ended up finding a workaround. According to this thread, if anyone is interested: https://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.php?threads/failed-deployment-to-mac-os-x.55209/
All you have to do is download the Windows version, download the NW.JS file linked in that thread, then put the NW.JS file inside the folder with the Game.exe file. Click the NW.JS file and it runs!

I ended up playing until the second day so far, and I quite like it. I only stopped because my attention span has been poor in general, lately. Some of my passing thoughts beneath the cut!

    Spoiler
First impression from the game page alone: the art is the main reason that led me to download. It’s beautiful and I visually enjoy the earthy tones. I’m also a big sucker for darker themes, too. ‘Dad’ types and antagonists are two of my favourite character archetypes, so I’m looking forward to seeing Mark in action.

Ok! Now that I’m in, I can say my immediate reaction was that the Press space to continue prompt was a little unnecessary. I also thought the +1 red potion -1 red potion bit was unnecessary too, unfortunately. Especially because my very first instinct was to go and take the red potion anyway. I did like the art of him picking it up, however. WASD/Arrow key functionality is nice.

Funny enough, while most of the controls were intuitive, I struggled for a moment to figure out that ESC lets you go back in the menus. Sound effects were nice though! I enjoy the little string music too.

It’s a little awkward to have to reach across my keyboard to hit ESC in the menus as well.

I loved Mark’s first scene. As I thought I would. Scenery is quite lovely. I like the electrical spark details.

*”Anthony you in?” should be “Anthony, you in?”

I liked being nosy in the diary woman’s house. I’m a bit of a snoop.

In Valentina’s house, I once again don’t think it’s necessary to have to say +1 -1 every time you pick up an item. Maybe it would be more intuitive to have a picture of Grich’s toy instead?

Can’t help but wonder if there’s an overpopulation problem in Florie. Might be an interesting development that justifies constant murder and abuse of power?

I like the touch of all the kids out wandering for scraps after the miners clock in.

The way Sam’s house shakes beneath the tracks is phenomenal. I love those small details.

After meeting with Valentina in the mines for the first time and attempting to leave, it says I met my quota, but I only have 7/10 iron.

The theft mini game was interesting and fun. I tried to go without stealing, but it’s a hard knock life :( Sad that I had to take from the others, but makes sense narratively.

Stopping in on the man abusing his wife was rough. Makes sense that you were only looking for Anthony, but that was an unexpected twist on the hero scenario I thought I might get to have.

Fell in love with Arridaios. Love me a tragic, reluctant hero who only wants to keep his family safe. I'll probably keep playing the demo later on and give my thoughts as I progress.

Trying to think of more little thoughts... I liked how giving the red potion to the injured man levelled me up. Interesting little touch. I was also worried for some reason that there would be BS options that lead to an automatic death since most free indie games that I've tried like to fall into that trap. Pleasantly surprised that there were none! Might be interesting if the theft mini game was incorporated into more parts of the game. Like when you're trying to swap the bread in front of the delusional wife at the very beginning, or trying to take things in situations where it wouldn't necessarily just be given to you.

One more thing is that it's a little awkward when there's dialogue but no portrait, given the way that the dialogue kind of awkwardly sits in the middle of the screen. If that makes sense? IE; when a portrait is there to fill up the left hand side, it looks great. But when there's no portrait, there's a weird gap.

That, and there's a few strangely phrased sentences here and there. Might be worth going over and having someone proofread/restructure a few dialogue bits eventually! I think there was also a part where Valentina and Arridaios discuss the lever a second time and it's treated as a surprise to Valentina when he already told her about it? To be fair my memory is also terrible and I could be wrong so my bad if I am!!

I think that's all I have to say for now!

All it all it was an interesting experience and I'm very glad I gave it a shot. I'm excited to keep going when I have the energy to play more!
  17. @katharine Ok! I managed to fix the problem! You can play it on the mac now! It's uploaded and ready to go!
  18. @katharine I just read your feedback! Thank you so much! Those blank image spaces are going to be filled with NPC portraits which is extremely important to world building. That's why it's spaced like that. As for everything else, I'm super glad you're enjoying the game. I hope you do get to finish this demo. You'll be exited for more once you do hahaha...
  19. How many games have you produced? :)
  20. @isoovak I've produced so far 2 games. 1 game to figure out how RPG maker mv engine works. The other game, a more professional game, called the beast named eliza which scored a high review in itch.
