Alright, I just did the Lord Cyrus fight, and I must say that I'm incredibly impressed with what's happening so far.
The Battle System
I am a personal fan of the battle system you are using. It doesn't stop the flow of the gameplay, and getting damaged is entirely the responsibility of the player. At first, I thought the game was a bit too easy, but then the first boss battle in Moonshine Cave was a nice wake-up call and it was a pretty nice fight.
However, when it came to the Lord Cyrus, I thought it was a bit too long for my tastes. Especially since I died the first time :/ when he was down to 1000 health and I just wasn't paying attention to my health and it just got away from me. It was a bummer and it was just as long the second time, but it didn't take away from the experience. I was fine with it.
The Story
Okay, I'm a softie for bits of romance, I will admit. I look forward to seeing more of it, and I'll let you know what I think as I go. Some parts seem a bit cheesy and cliched, but it's used fairly rationally. I do like the Princess, Moris, and the Dark Lords as characters. They seem decently balanced and well-rounded. I even liked the scene with the King's annoying guard when he was talking about his crappy job as a teacher. Just made the characters seem a little human.
All of the aesthetics
- The music and sound effects are used wonderfully, even if you had to resort to default music. I personally think the music used in the first 'Survive!' battle is a little overused and slightly out-of-place (the one clearly from Two Steps from Hell), but that's from a composer's perspective. I like original stuff, of course. :)
- The mapping is nice and simple, as it should be.
- The attacks in battle are cool and flashy, and it makes gameplay nice and engaging.
Everything else
- Here's the thing: your OP does not sell your game at all. You have something pretty good here, and your post just seems so lazily done. In most cases, I would just take a look at it, shrug, and move on my way. You managed to make your game pop, I'm sure you can do a thing or two on your game topic.
- Maybe add in a few more monsters into each area. Either that, or don't introduce every single monster you're going to encounter in the first room. I know I've only played early in the game, but it's so easy to learn each of the monsters' skills and powers in the first room, and then have them mastered by the second room.
- Make Lord Cyrus' fight a bit shorter. I know he's a lord and everything, but 10000 HP and hits that round out to be roughly 40 damage each, it makes for a long fight. Especially since Cyrus' pattern doesn't change at all (which is sad, because I died to him once, but still)
I'm going to gladly continue on, and I'll let you know again what I think when I finish the whole thing. :)
EDIT:
Okay, apparently if you upgrade your spells, it makes you more powerful and makes the Cyrus a hundred times easier. :/ Well, that was me being dumb, the fight is perfectly reasonable.
Also, I got an error in two spots. Script 'XAS - Battler 2' line 1408: NoMethodError occurred. undefined method '-' for nil:NilClass: when I entered the cave with the big trolls and stuff. Essentially, I took the cart towards the inside, went to the left a bit, and then it took me out. And it happened in the middle of the 2nd horde fight.
