Tall character creator (non-Chibi), 1920's fashion

  1. Hi everyone!

I'm relatively new here, and still new to RPG Maker MV. But when I was younger, I was quite proficient with RPG Maker 2003.

Semi-unrelated note: I decided to start making a new game and got MV recently. I have no title for it , and only a basic story premise. But one of the main things that irritated me with newer RPG Makers have been their chibi graphics. I really don't like them, and I've seen other people on here with similar feelings. I've decided to re-make all of the character graphics. To do so, I made my own mini-character generator within Adobe Photoshop. It's not perfect, and I'd like feedback on character design, animation, etc. But so far I've made about 65 characters for the game, which I am freely sharing (just credit Matthias1).

I feel like the more people who use tall character graphics like this, the more resources will be made for it. Currently all I have is Victorian-modern era.

You can download my character pack below.

Here are some samples (for some reason, the image isn't showing, just the link)

For those who wish to use the Photoshop files to generate their own characters.

Firstly, you must have basic knowledge of how Photoshop works. Understand layers, how to export, etc. From there, you should be able to select which layers you want on. I've divided them up by category of clothing. There is also an optional border layer at the bottom that can help you line up the character files.

Once you've got all the layers selected, you can press CTRL + ALT + SHIFT + E. This will duplicate all these files into one merged layer. Once you've got 8 characters made, you can use the borders layer to neatly line them up. Export for Web to the image character folder, and you've got it.

As these images are a work in progress, don't be surprised if I constantly update the Adobe file, or re-create the fundamental design/animation of the bodies. OR if you edit them and make better versions, even better! The only requirement I ask is that you post these updates, new additional articles of clothing, etc onto this Forum. Don't hog resources!

  2. @matthias1 None of your images are showing. We have trouble with certain methods of showing them. I'd suggest either using the "Upload a File" button at the bottom or hosting them on a site such as Imgur.

Thanks, I got it fixed now!

Thanks for your words of support. Please spread the word! I'd like as many people using my style as possible.
  6. Very cool! I appreciate the guide on how to do your own edits as well.
  7. Very nice!
I'm not going to use it myself since my project is old-skool fantasy all the way but this is very nicely done
and thanks for sharing it with the world :)
  8. Something interesting I've always noticed on this particular style of sprite template is that the walk cycle breaks the baseline, where as the stock sprites remain consistent. Always wondered what that looks/feels like in game.

It looks pretty good in game, however I think it would probably benefit from having more frames. Since the release of this version, I've actually improved the walking frame a little bit. The arms move out a little too much from the front and back view so I made some corrections. Looks pretty smooth all in all.

I want to eventually extend into old-school fantasy style. One game at a time. But I'll be keeping the basic character frame and art style.

I have not tried it out in GIMP yet. Feel free to give it a try.

Terms of use are pretty simple. Free to use for commercial and non-commercial products! Just give credit to Matthias1.

You are also free to edit, manipulate, or expand upon the graphics in any way you want, as long as you share it with me (either privately or publicly on this thread).
  13. Can these be used in RPG Maker 2003?

I don't believe so. You would have to do some tinkering with the grid and the character size.
  15. I've just recently stumbled across this project.
Very nice work indeed! It is very good to see more people making non-chibi characters for MV.

    Thank you for sharing this!
