  1. Hello there everyone,

    well here my questions,

    - What tool do you guys use when doing linearts? For me it will be brush. Though i start to think that pen might be better.

    - Which shading style did you prefer, cell-shade or soft-style?

    - When doing Faces for RM, did you guys start with big canvas then shrink it? Or you just start with 96x96?

    - Do you even like to do linearts?

That all! Thank you for reading, please answer if you cann
  2. Im more of a pencil-paper person and I lineart with an actual pen. I do pixel art sometimes but like 90% pencil.

Shadiiiing... Sometimes. Dont know what cell/soft shades are... guess its a digital thing.

I really like doing linearts, actually.

(wishes I could post art somewhere but doesnt have a scanner)
  3. @Mirpono

O_O how do you do pixel arts with pencil?
  4. - I use brushes for everything, more specifically anything chalk related in Photoshop CC. ;D I tend to stay away from digital linework though, I like defining the shapes through shading more.

    - Cell-shade :D The harder the brush the better! I like strong and confident strokes. (I'm completely aware I set myself up for some jokes here ;) )

    - Yes~ Start big and then adjust to my liking that way I can use the face set for something else as well, like cover art and such~

    - I adore making line arts :D especially anything ink related, traditional style! The problem with me is that when I move to color I tend to paint it over :|

I once spend two weeks working on one project, I can't really scan the whole thing since it way too big, therefore I took some horrid blurry pictures! LINEWORK FOR LIFE!

    O[]O DAT piece *close mouth*

The piece really show your 2 weeks work O_O very awesome!! *applause*

    One question for you:

When you shrink the faces and put it in the game, does it look good? Just like when the canvas is big?
  6. I use a mix of tool I use for my base

    a brush in red color

after if I need a sketch I use a blue Ink pen in sai

after the lineart is done via the ink pen in say this one I do my stuff

this a little complicate to explain me who are not a pure english
    • For lineart, I use a brush tool to sketch out the basic shape/idea of what I'm drawing, then I go back and refine it with a pen/pencil tool. Generally I'll have the brush outline be red, then the pencil outline be black.
    • My style of shading depends on the medium I'm working with. If it's traditional media (graphite, charcoal, etc.) I prefer soft shading. If it's digital media, I prefer cel-shading.

Traditional (white colored pencil on black paper, soft shading) vs. Digital (cel-shading)
You'll never guess which took longer to draw...
    • For busts/facesets, my drawings are roughly twice as large as the finished artwork will be.
    • Do I like making linearts? No. However, they're a necessarily evil when it comes to drawing chibis. :D
  7. @bukarett/amysauras: those are beautiful Q_Q.....

NH97, I use one of these for lines:

    • Pencil/Marker Brush in sai (50% min size. Smooth. Hardness+0. Pressure controls size)
    • Brush Brush in sai (30% min size. Smooth. Hardness+100. Pressure controls dens, size and blending)
    • Pen Tool in photoshop (stroke with a uniform 100% Hard Brush without simulating pressure, taper afterwards with eraser instead).
    • Binary Bezier Tool in ms paint
I rarely create anything at 1x final size, if i expect it to look neat. Usually i do 2x.

Just now, I tried copying an rtp portrait. I used sai pencil brush for both lines and colouring. I did it at 4x final size... which is overkill, but it hides a ton of mistakes: (1) Shaky lines, obviously, but also  (2) colouring out of bounds, (3) unintentionally uneven lines, and (4) poorly formed shapes from shading.

i don't plan on finishing this, but you get the idea:

steaming pile of -> scale down 25% -> looks passable. Fwahaha.

  8. As I use Paint Tool SAI, I do my linework in the linework layer which is clean enough.

As for facesets, busts, or chibi I first make bigger then shrink it down when finished.
  9. @nio kasgami

haha we use same brush color xD

    @Amysaurus

O_O that goose........it VERY prettyyyyyyy. I LUV IT!!

When using other style shade in traditional way, it is MUCH MORE easier than doing it digitally. I think maybe because we get more flexibility when using our own hand than tablet.......well except you get expensive Intuos ._."

    @Adellie

Haha yeah i agreed with you, i start at 3kx3k canvas then shrink it too 96x96 (this is extreme kill? XD). Well idk about being neat or not BUT for me, my pic has to be clean no matter what > :D

But damn, dat a nice tip you gimme xD

    @Evan Moonkid

In my ol days, i also use line layer to work with linearts. But after using brush, i realize it gave much more softer feeling than using line tool. So i choose brush cuz it suit my style xd
  10. For lineart and everything else, I use brushes, since the curves will become sexier and more organic. While pen tool is great for doing logos or layout work, it does not have very dynamic flow to the lines it draws. And thus yeah, I do lineart~

I have no preference over soft or shell shading stylewise, but when I draw myself (obviously not RM graphics) I go usually for smooth shading.

And yup, I draw in higher resolution and then shrink down. For RTP style, I usually do 3x or 4x larger canvas than the final product will be.
  11. What tool do you guys use when doing linearts? For me it will be brush. Though i start to think that pen might be better.

I used to use Paint Tool Sai and my preference was the Pen Tool.

But I long moved to Clip Studio. I created a custom brush that has the linework of G-Pen and the smoothness of a Chinese Calligraphy Pen. (Both of them works, it's just my thing). They're pen tools as well in Clip Studio.

    - Which shading style did you prefer, cell-shade or soft-style?

I combine both. But with very high preference towards hard cell shading.

    - When doing Faces for RM, did you guys start with big canvas then shrink it? Or you just start with 96x96?

I draw at 3000x3000 so I can provide a bust, faceset and a high resolution version of the image, should the commissioner needs it. Or if RM goes high res.

    - Do you even like to do linearts?

    Yes.
  12. @NH97

I worded that post wrong XD

I usually do pencil and paper but sometimes i go to do digital pixel work.
  13. I only do art for myself, but

    • I initially sketch with a brush (and in blue) as it feels most natural and everything comes out better if I plot it out first and then I take a mixture of pen and pencils (in black) to really carve my lines, or at least that's what I've been practicing! And then do eraser things.
    • At the moment I mostly do soft shading, especially since I digitally paint a lot and those digital paintings have zero lines; just all color and shading to make everything. But I have intentions to do more cell shading on my drawings that use lines and "solid" color blocking.
    • If I'm doing a face set I start with the drawing massive and draw out the entire character head-to-toe so I can re-size and crop it into absolutely everything I might need.
    • I've mostly only painted in my life time and done traditional medium so doing line art, or any digital art, is sort of a new challenge for me. But, I'd like to do my own game art and I feel heavily lined arts tend to work better in that environment.
