  1. Hello its CorneredCosmos, and I'm here to ask you about your opinion and thoughts.

So what's the question today? Well, the artist on our team was talking about changing the graphics for the tilesets. Its something I've been thinking of doing for a long time, but... we are so far now! Should I change these? I tried and goodness it is hard to find tiles that work with all of these. I don't know if you could help me by leading me in the right direction, I am truly lost and stressed by this. I tried several tilesets with these maps... and some of them do not have the tiles to satisfy what I want to see.

What do I want to see? Well look at the various samples below, it shows you the variety of the maps so far, and I need to find better tilesets that fit those needs.

Told you it was alot of maps... and there's much more inside the game. These are just samples of the variety of maps that I have in the game.

So what do you think... should I go ahead an change the style to make it better?

    What tiles should I use?

Truly a thanks is deserved to you for your help on this matter. It would be a great lift for me on your insight and help guide me to what path of action I should take. Please do ask any questions that you have about the issue, I will provide answers.
  2. On the one hand, I'm a bit tired of RPG Maker games all looking the same so I am all for someone changing the graphics to be something different! On the other hand, the RTP has a lot of stuff and a lot more has been made to match it, you're not going to find another tileset style with that much diversity. If having that diversity is the most important thing to you then you should stay where you're at. If having a stand out graphic style is more important then it's better to switch over the maps sooner rather than later.

My favorite style of sets that are out right now is the DS tiles and it's next in line for diversity of tiles (in my opinion, I haven't got the High Fantasy sets so I don't know about those). If you want to use that I would highly suggest getting a Members+ account, a lot of the artists who provide things for it love the DS style. If you're very careful about what you use and willing to put the effort in you could use XP's RTP to expand it a bit. The scale is wrong but the style is the same so if you keep to the stuff where the scale is more flexible (like walls, floor tiles, statues, trees) then it should work.

As for the whole question of if you should do something that drastic this far in, it depends entirely what the priorities are for your team. Changing the graphics is most certainly going to delay your release and make more work for someone, but changing the graphics will make it look more appealing for your potential players and apparently the whole team wants a different look. Deciding between these priorities isn't something outsiders should be doing for you.
  3. Thanks for your feedback, I know this probably should not be outsiders problem... but it was late at night and I got very stressed out. So I was looking for opinions.

I'll take a look into what you suggested, and see what I can do. This will be all on me if we go this route. XP might be a good way to go, but if we go DS I do not have to change the scale. So I will see what both have to offer. From there I will make my choice.
  4. Just a word of warning: XP tiles are a bit difficult to work with in Ace because of the differences in autotiles.
  5. I know sharm... thats why I decided to go DS. As it has everything we need and it will be easier on the team.
  6. Cool! Glad I could be of some help in your decision.
  7. Have you considered editing the RTP tiles at all? Like clumping and hue change? You can do the same with the DS tiles as well mind you.

Also a liiiiitle off topic but in the first two maps your using the water tile wrong, the tiles that look like shallow water is actually walls/ cliffs to show depth. It's not your fault, those tiles should have been the other way around or something.

So it should look something like this:

  8. I use mainly rtp myself and think there is nothing wrong with it on a basic level, I recolour mine and that way anything that isn't rtp but I like I edit the colour and contrast ect so that they all fit together, Instead of changing tile sets you could just switch trees for example and just edit the colours, saves you redrawing things if the tile sets aren't set out exactly the same as the ones u have already used.
  9. @ChaosAvian, I have, but I do not have experience in parallax editing.

Oh... well I like the way the water looks right now. So... I am not going to change that.

I spent hours on configuring DS without fruits to my effort. I give up! I am not going to redo everything... I think I'll just try to find some edits.
  10. Edits all the way man, if you like the look of something from the ds tiles cut it past it over the equivalent in your current tile sets and edit the colours to match, its the way to go in my opinion
  11. Yes... well now I just need to find them. I don't know if you know where I can find some RTP edits.
  12. depends on what type of edit lol , you could do them yourself or ask someone, I edit all mine myself so how are your wanting to edit stuff?? I may be able to do a bit for you
  13. Well, I would like the trees to look better and the grass for the mountain and ground tiles. I cannot think of anything else right now.
  14. Ok the trees here were done bye mac so you must credit him if you choose to use them. When you say the grass do u mean the colour of the base grass or the tall grass?

    Outside_B.png
  15. I mean the color/ quality of the grass. To make it less flat and thank you those look great!
  16. Here is a simple colour edit of the outside tile set I did something similar  for my own project.

or you could use the grass from the dungeon tile set like I used in the Sacred Grove picture from my game, thought the set up is different to how you would use the tile I may be able to sort something out. Let me know what you  think and il see if I can have a tinker when I get chance

ps to make your grass look less flat when you map use the longer grass in patches to give it a bit of dimension rather than just the single base tile

    Sacred Grove.png
  17. Those don't work, because they do not match the grass on the lake or cliff tiles. I have a town that uses both of those.
  18. yeh I completely forgot about those bits lol its like half 2 in the morning hear so my head a bit bombed, here is the set I myself work and I don't have any issues so try these:

Note : Credit Celianas for one of the house tiles

also in my mapping I use parallax backgrounds to make it look like there is a reflection in the water, so the water tiles are transparent that's why in the Sacred Grove looks like there are clouds in reflected in the water, well that my aim lol

If those work il edit all the rtp so that the grass and stuff is all the right colours but the water isn't see through and I wont include Celianas house auto tile , but for now u may as well see if they suite your needs

    Hope they help

  19. Those look great... yes i would need the parallax for the water.
Thanks for your help so far, guess you could go ahead and edit them anyway thats needed. I'm tired myself... I've been fighting with a script all day and now I have another error! So I'm probably as fog minded as you are.
  20. Hi here is a parallax I use for my water created form splicing  together several parallax and battle backs and messing with the occupancies and contrasts. If you use it please give me a credit :D

Note: the way I use the parallax is as you would normaly bye placing in the parallax folder, however I also use a fix parallax script that allows me to fix I in place if I wish. I generally don't have as much water on my maps so I am not sure how well it will work on large open water maps. If you find that you see several of the parallax "map" in the water sort of like as tiles. Just resize the parallax image to something that will be big enough to cover the whole map.

or I am pretty sure that the actual look of the water isn't too bad even with out a parallax showing underneath it. Let me know how it goes anyways
