Script's right claim

  1. Hello there,

I'm not sure if this is the right category to post that question, but I will do so anyway.

I started creating scripts upon request a few days ago and I would like to claim the rights of the code I created. Does it matter if there are other scripts out there with similar or same functions as my script? Since I created the script from scratch, I do own the rights of that code correct?
  2. yes, if you created code from scratch (without looking at other code for help), then you own the rights on that code - which doesn't prevent others from writing their own codes for similiar functions.

That means that others having written similiar scripts does not prevent you from claiming rights to your code, but you can't claim exclusivity for your code either - if someone writes similiar code without looking at your code, then that someone will have the right on his code.

Basically that means that copyrights on code are only for larger scripts where you put in a lot of work - the smaller a script, the more difficult it will be to proof that some snippet is yours and not made independently.

That said - what do you want to claim the code for? Credits should be automatically to you from whomever uses your code...

And if you want to sell your services, you have to go into the classified sections - requests are automatically free of charge - that's why we have the difference between classified work and request work.

Thanks for the reply. The main problem for a beginner coder is to gain the trust of the developer. It happened to me recently. What I actually want to do is to have a place where I put my created scripts (made upon request), so I can have proof that I actually do have the skills. Also, I didn't know the existence of classified sections :D . I will definately take a look there too.
  4. That you can do without any other considerations - in fact, a lot of scripters have their own blog where they post the script they do for free, and only link to there from everywhere (for example Tsukihime, Galv, Yanfly and others)

If you don't have your own blog site and don't want to register to a free blog site like Wordpress, your member+ membership allows you to create a blog on this site - you might want to experiment here before deciding how to handle that.
  5. I will certainly do so :D ! Thanks so much for the reply.
  6. If you have only just started coding, then Classifieds is definitely not for you. We do not allow people to advertise there unless they are well skilled.

If you have been coding for a long time and have only just started responding to requests, that is a different matter, and you would definitely be better off showing a portfolio of your work. In that case, if your scripts have been provided for free and the requesters have no issue with you sharing them, you could post them there. If you don't want to post the actual scripts, a video of them in action might also be suitable.

If you don't have a lot to provide to show your skills, you may just consider looking in the Classifieds - Requests forum (again, only if you consider yourself experienced enough) to see if you can fill any of those requests.

Moving to Commercial Discussion, as Scripts in Development is for actual scripts that are in development
  7. I have been writing scripts for over a year now and started responding to requests recently. I will keep trying both Requests-Classifields forum and feeling my portfolio ;) . Thanks again.
  8. no worries. I wasn't sure what "started ... a few days ago" meant. Sounds good :)
