RPG Maker VX Ace Lite, and Kickstarter?

  1. Hello! Currently, I'm using the "Lite" version of the RPG Maker VX Ace product, and am realising that it has limited functionality as compared to the retail version. Unfortunately, I do not actually have the funds with which to purchase said retail version at this time, as much as I'd like to. Thus, a few queries:

-May I create a short demo, using the RPG Maker VX Ace Lite, and release it via Kickstarter in the hopes of raising the funds to acquire the full version?

-Are those products that I create via Lite using the provided materials able to be used commercially (i.e. may I directly "sell" anything I make in it)?

And a few basic questions (that I'm sure are answered about every other Tuesday here), but as long as I'm here and asking:

-If/Once I acquire the full retail version, I need not jump through any further hoops so as to sell my products created therein, yes? That is, I may use the provided graphics, sounds, music (when I'm not using my own), etc. and as long as I give credit to the company that created the product, all is well?

-As far as I can tell, VX Ace is the most expensive, but also seems worth the investment in terms of functionality. Am I correct in this assessment, and should I continue (intending) to use it as my primary tool, while I'm still in this one-person Indie pseudo-RPG Development mode? If any of the other products works better, how do they intersect with all the Ace-specific questions asked above?

I will ask any further questions if I have them. Thank you very much for your time!
  2. I dont think you can. You need the full version to have rights to sell or make money off of your game.
  3. 1) The lite version is non-commercial only, you may not sell anything made with it - which also includes that you cannot offer it on kickstarter, because kickstarter only funds commercial projects as far as I know.

2)yes, if you purchase the full version, you are allowed to use the results commercially - after you purchased it, not before. That includes the RTP and all resources purchased in Degica's shop.

If you use other resources, you have to check the original artists terms-of-service.

    3) The different RPG-Makers were developed one after another, they are not really competitive products. The oldest, XP, is still there due to the fakt that a lot of people like its mapping better. The newest, Ace, has so much improvement over the middle one (VX) that new users should either purchase XP or Ace, the VX is for very special cases only (mainly for licencing options for special resources).
  4. Thank you very much for your replies!

re: Andar, what about distributing the Lite-created product for free, with the Kickstarter itself for the (promise of a) full-release? That is, offering the Lite-created product freely available, as a demonstration, with the Kickstarter itself being for the finished product, whether the demo or otherwise? Technically, it would be going towards my purchase of Ace, with an added promise that I would use my purchase to finish and further what I have started now, with Ace Lite. It seems very much treading a line, to me, but from my angle it appears technically admissible, since I would not actually be selling the product that I had created via Lite.

However, I certainly do not want to go ahead with what appears admissible, when it is in fact not. Would my amended plan, above, be allowed?

And re: Andar, thank you for your advising as to which product to purchase!
  5. The Humble Bundle is still available on the Humble Store for $15.  You can get the full version of Ace as one of the items.  Beg the money off someone if you haven't got it yourself.  It will solve your problems and will never be as cheap again.  You can get it here. https://www.humblebundle.com/store/p/rpgmaker_weeklybundle_storefront

More directly on your question - getting on to Kickstarter requires some expenditure if you hope to get anywhere at all.  If you can't afford to get Ace, I doubt you will be able to afford all the necessary expenditure to get on Kickstarter.
  6. re: ksjp17, as far as I am able to read, the Kickstarter service requires less than $70 to participate in, although however much one requires in order to participate successfully is unknown to a newbie as myself. However, the Humble Bundle link you provided is absolutely wonderful news, and (assuming I'm able to scrape the amount up), I'll never be able to thank you enough for this small amount of aid. Thank you!
