I have no bias against it.
From the technical perspective, you can essentially use Rpgmaker to create anything, but honestly it'd be a lot easier to use engines like Gamemaker for games which aren't RPGs. Of course, with Ruby being right there for you to edit, alter and rewrite as you please, if you know what you're doing, it is merely a matter of choice,in fact you could achieve results even without scripting, through eventing, though Personally, and being a player for both teams, I would just stick to Game maker for a plataformer/Sidescrolling game, but certainly never for rpgs.
From a player's perspective, I don't care which engine you used, I just wanna play a fun game. :p
Edit:
Actually "It would be a lot easier to use engines like Gamemaker for games which aren't role playing games" is too vague of a response, lemme elaborate on that.
I've dabbled into making Rpgmaker work for games which aren't traditional role playing games, and it has certainly worked. But honestly, to create games outside of the rpg genre, I've found myself investing more time in restructuring RGSS3 and eventing, than by using Gamemaker's GML scripting language, which comes with generic built-in functions to aid the creation of any type of game.
Of course RGSS3 can do this, but by default, it comes tuned to work for rpgs, i.e by default it is designed to have functions developers would most likely find useful in the creation of rpgs, it isn't intended to work for other type of games unless you write the stuff yourself, and this kind of generic functions is what already comes with Game Maker, and they're easily editable too, GML( Game-maker language) is a really intuitive scripting language, far easier than understanding Ruby imho. Whereas I spent quite some time understanding how RGSS3 was built and worked, GML only took me 2 days to get comfortable with.
As I said, it all comes down to personal preference, experienced coders will just write their own functions to fit their needs and transform the engine as they need, for others who want it easier and can't be bothered to reinvent the wheel, Gamemaker nicely covers the rest of the 2d genre. ( again, I would never use it to create and rpg though lol, that'd be a loooot more work than just using rpg maker for said task.) And hey, if you like rpgmaker's functionality and just wanna add in some stuff to make it work for a plataformer, go for it~ I've seen amazing plataformers created with rpgmaker. -
It can work. I have no clue how easy it would be to do it with RPG Maker though, I know little about scripting.
Valkyrie Profile did a good job of using 2D maps and incorporating puzzles in that fashion.
Without a battle system though, then it becomes more like an action game with RPG elements, such as the more recent Castlevania games. -
Isn't that what IG maker is for? I'm not too familiar with that particular program but my husband has Construct, which makes games like that using HTML and it's SO easy to work with. I saw him fiddling with it before and if you like arcade type games it's going to make your life SO easy if you just use another program like that. Its going to take a lot of scripting to make it happen in rpg maker. I mean if you're going to do just a mini-game attached to your rpg I can see doing it but if you have in mind a whole game exclusive to side-scrolling... I'd look around at other makers first if you've got the cash to spare. Besides some are free and some have trials, so you can know before hand.
