RMXP tilesets for RMVX Ace?

  1. So while playing around with RMVX Ace I noticed I just really don't like the RTP that comes with it. The tilesets are just really simple, and I can't see why there are only a few tilesets provided, compared to RMXP's huge RTP.

Million dollar question: Has anyone converted the RMXP RTP tilesets to RMVX Ace format? If yes, who and where? If no, is there anyone who knows how to do it?
  2. There are a few that have done some parts of it, and there are a few people working on doing more but mostly no.  The way XP does its tiles is different enough from Ace to make conversion a really large project.  The main problem is the auto tiles.  XP has lovely 32x32 tiles for each edge and Ace has a much more limited 16x16 corners with rectangular edges (16x32 and 32x16) making it impossible to just cut it down to the right size.
  3. But is there a way it can be done?
  4. Sure, but you have to be an artist to pull it off.  Some of it needs redrawing to work, and there's no way to avoid the loss of information so you'd have to pick and choose what parts are more important and what to let go.
  5. That sucks pretty hard.
  6. yes, it can be done - but you need to know how to handle an image program and cut the original XP tiles up in smaller parts before reconnecting them in a different way, and then probably pixelpaint over those parts that still don't fit.

and no, I don't know of any tutorial or description how to do that, you would have to experiment and find out yourself.
  7. Yeah.  Mlogan and I have been slowly working on the autotile problem but it's a low priority project.  I don't think either of us have done anything on it since July.
  8. How is the quality of VX Ace scripts when compared to XP? Are they like worlds apart or just small stuff? Because this might be the deal breaker that pushes me back to XP. I really love VX's overall interface and such, but the RTP is just a joke when compared to XP.

Yeah, I've been thinking I need to pick it back up! Maybe this will be some motivation to do so!
  10. Bridgeman:  That type of question isn't really suited for this section of the forums.  It's been asked before too.  Do a search, you'll find the answers quickly enough.  You aren't limited to the RTP though, there are lots of resources around the forums and there's also the graphic packs from the store, which are set up for Ace's mapping style.

mlogan:  Man, I would love to, but I need to at least get enough done on my new set for a good mockup.  I really shouldn't be dividing my time so early in development.  I will support anything you do though!

That's my problem, with RMXP you get a lot of diverse tilesets bundled with it, with RMVX Ace you have to pay if you want anything else.
  12. XP's RTP isn't that much bigger than ace, it just looks like it because of the way that XP's tiles work.  There are a lot of repeat tiles.  Also, the packs aren't made by Enterbrain, they're mostly done by artist who hang out here in the forums.  It isn't some "should have been included with the program" thing.  These packs wouldn't have existed if they weren't done separately.

Maybe you have a point there. I have to ask, does this make it hard to make your own tilesets for VX Ace? Because I'm just starting to learn pixel art, and I've done some very basic tiles, but in the XP way.
  14. In some ways yes, some no.  XP tiles are easier to make aesthetically pleasing but Ace is set up to be more efficient.
  15. Is there like a guide or something to help make custom tilesets fit for VX Ace?
  16. Wow, this is amazing. is that true, that the VX Ace RTP is painted and not pixeled? I honestly hadn't noticed that
  17. Painted as in made with anti-aliased brushes? Yep.
  18. Well, that explains why VX Ace looks so colorful and smooth. Thanks for all the help you've provided.
  19. You're welcome. :)
