Resized sprites, too fuzzy?

  1. I made the sprites I was using in VXAce (though they are XP styled) bigger for MV using this: http://www.kickbackgames.com/mvfu/ which apparently produced better results for other people, I guess because the style of sprite I was using was not ideal for it. I really don't want to have to redesign my sprites from scratch again since I spent so much time on them, but I'm really worried they look too fuzzy. Should I redo them or do you think they still look okay?

  2. You don't really need to redo them, you can just make them bigger without blurring them. (So that it would be the same, but with 2x2 pixels) But what I would do, is I would increase the size, and then go through them and manually clean up the lines, so that it's not pixelated. Understand what I'm trying to say?
  3. I'm not sure if the program I used blurred them, but I tried resizing them myself before, and with one method I tried, they ended up looking still pixelated, but kind of distorted and weird, and with another they looked even blurrier (though it worked really well for the tilesets, oddly enough) but I could try cleaning up the lines!
  4. I've moved this thread to Resource Support. Thank you.

  5. Well, if you're resizing them to 1.5x their original size, then that will obviously have disproportioned pixels... You'd have to multiply the width and height by a whole number. Again, I would just increase the size to whatever I want it, and then clean up the fat pixels manually.

Yeah, there aren't a lot of great ways to resize pixel art if you're not using whole numbers, unfortunately. :headshake:

I think it'd look best if you went with the fuzzier sprites and fixed them manually. If you'd rather not go through and fix everything, I think it'd still look pretty decent if you go around the edges and erase the fuzzy bits.
  7. Resizing always means that you use a mathematical formula to guess the color of added pixels. Which basically means that unless you resize by exact multiples of 100% (200%, 300% and so on), you will always get distortions.

However, different mathematical formulae used for this result in different forms of distortion, and depending on the picture some of those different distortions look better than others.
That is why the better image programs offer you a choice as to what formula to use on resizing.
  8. You can also try RyanBram's RTP Scaler on Fast setting - the result will still require you to do some manual cleanup, but it might save you some work.

I downloaded it and I'm not sure how to use it. When I tried running the thing that I think is the program, some weird "cmd" thing showed up and I think I'm supposed to type stuff in it?
  10. I think for now I'm just going to try to clean up the transparent pixels along the edges. Unless there is a way to make MV use the same size graphics as VXAce, or 200% of that instead of 150%. If someone has already made a script for that or something it would probably be easier than redoing the sprites. I already tried just cleaning up the face and it looks even worse. But if would help a lot, for making more sprites eventually, if there were any resources for sprite bases in the same style but the correct size for MV?
  11. [dpost]drwho10[/dpost]Part of the problem you're having here is that sprites are usually pixel art and most resize methods use an algorithm that works better for rasterized images. Using a method that keeps the pixels sharp can help a lot. I use this program and then go in by hand and fix it up from there. I find that it helps a little bit to size it up by 300% first and then size it down by 50%. It's a little less confusing for the computer that way.

If you're just wanting a base with different proportions, do a search for tall base or tall sprite in the MV Resources section. There's actually quite a few, but they're usually just bases. Other sprite options don't tend to have a lot of premade hair or clothing options.
