re-colour: some questions. legal stuff.

Me again!

I have taken the Green double bed and created a single bed version and also recoloured them to make some blue ones. Whats the copyright behind this? Am I allowed to re-colour/edit exisiting tiles?

Furthermore I have a friend who wants to use my re-colours. Is it ok to send them to him?

Obviously I wont be selling the reclours as a pack as well: thats clearly wrong. But what about if I wanted to sell my game? Can I still use my edits? What if my friend wanted to sell his game  could he even though I have sent him edits of the existing tiles? What if someone on these forums liked the recolours and i sent them to that person?

Where do I stand on this?

Not sure but euphoria makes some edits of the rtp and shares it under creative Commons sharealike license.

As long as you own the engine to which the graphics RTP belongs to, you may edit them freely. You may share them freely with others as long as you link to or mention the RTP license, which you can find on the RTP download page. You can not charge for the edits. Since you can release commercial games using the RTP, you can do this with RTP edits too. However, you must credit Enterbrain in your credits.

That's the gist of it, but I'm sure a mod will turn up soon and give you the exact details.

It depends what tiles you are editing.  If they are the RTP, then yes you can use them in a game you sell as long as it is the engine you own.  Similarly, if you are editing something that you have bought then you can use them.

Where it gets complicated is other people using those edits.  If they are making their game in collaboration with you, then they are covered by your licence.  If it is their own game, then they must own the unedited tiles.  RTP edits can only be used by someone who owns the particular engine that the RTP came from (Ace, XP, VX).  If it is a resource pack that you are editing, then the person using those edits must also own the pack. 

ah some very interesting points. So as long as I keep the files myself I shouldnt have any problems :D Thats fine by me as I plan on making a few edits.

Recolours of the standard RTP is fine, it's even fine if you upload them to the resource forum.

Anything that came with RPG Maker VX Ace when you first bought it.

It is legal as long as you don't sell them, you can also share them on other sites (just say that you only re-coloured them)
