Question concerning the rules of this section

  1. Hello, I am new to the RPG Maker community and was wondering a few things about this section. I noticed that this is mentioned in the rules:

    • "Do not post any resources that can be made with a generator, of any type. Character sets, facesets, music, etc."
I was wondering if there was any more elaboration on this, if it only applies for completely original content. Let's say, for instance, if someone made some characters & face sets with the RPG Maker program or made some music with a program like 'Music Maker Jam'. Would that be permissible to post?

I have a project I'm working on which I am incorporating into RPG Maker VX Ace and would like to share about what I've been working on. However, I've been in the initial stages of adapting it to this program and, in doing so, I have been experimenting with editing a few preexisting character & face sets (as well as battlers, tiles, and more) just to get used to how it works. I have been producing some original content for the project as well, though I have been playing around with a program which came with my new computer called 'Music Maker Jam'. I was hoping to find out if this would fall into the 'generator' category or not.

As for this section of the forum, would I be able share some of the graphics & audio I've been experimenting with, or is that generally not acceptable? I will be glad to comply with whatever the ruling is on this matter. Hope all is well and look forward to hearing from You soon!

    Thank You,

    Sol
  2. Okay, not an official here or anything but in my time I've picked up this:

This section is for sharing resources you've made with the community. That rule specfically speaks to things like character and face sets in RMA or other generators. Basically, don't post things here that I could go into RMA or another program and make myself. I'm not sure if a program like Music Maker Jam would count or not - I don't know that program.

Editing resources is a bit different. If they are simple recolors or that type of thing, I'm pretty certain that is frowned upon posting - but don't quote me on that, I could be wrong. However more involved edits are allowed to be shared as long as they are properly credited.

There are different ways you can share about your progress or things you are creating. There is a Screenshots/Map thread where you can post images of your game for feedback. You could start a thread in the appropriate section (Early Project Feedback/Project Development) to share about it.

As far as sharing the graphics and audio, it depends on how you want to share them. If you are wanting to share them so that others can use them, then yes, if they are the proper formats, this would be the place to share.

If you are just wanting to show off your work, there is an Art/Music/Literature section where many people post that kind of more general thing.

I'm sorry I wasn't able to be more specific with the music program you are using, but I hope this helps.
  3. Thank You, mlogan, I appreciate Your assistance.
I figured that was most likely the case, I'll eventually be sharing content from my project for others to use. Here's a sample of what I put together earlier with Music Maker Jam:

It's a simple loop program that lets You select from a variety of pre-set instrument sounds & loops to edit together make layers. While others could potentially use the program to 'generate' something similar, I wouldn't mind simply sharing what I've put together on it for others to use (if allowable). The program specifies that it is for non-commercial uses though.

Even though it is not the program I typically use to compose music, I am interested to know how it comes into play here. If anyone else has an idea about this, I'd like to know Your input.
  4. It means don't go into the character generator or face generator or any generator and click a button that says "Generate" and post that to share. What you share MUST be made yourself, or edits of RTP stuff or stuff you've made yourself (or stuff from others ONLY if you have their permission).

One of the musicians who shares their stuff here regularly) or a mod would be able to answer your question re the loops. My own thought is that it wouldn't be allowed, as you're not actually making the music yourself - you're just arranging it. But I might be wrong.
  5. My understanding is that if it can be created by someone else with little ease, it isnt something to post. If you are taking loops from a program and just placing them in a certain order, I would say that is not looked at as original as you did not make the loops themselves and anyone with the program could make the same. However, if you make your own loops and then do it as said before, that is your own original content and is absolutely welcome. We always welcome original materials, it's just that material that isn't completely original enters a bit of a grey area that makes it hard to judge with complete certainty how much credit should be given to whom.

But take my words with a grain of salt. I'm not staff, nor am I an expert in law. I'm just a fellow musician. I would ask staff for a more definitive answer.
  6. Thanks for the input, I'm not looking to claim that anything used in Music Maker Jam is something I created as original though was just wondering if there was a place I could share what I've arranged in the program for whoever else to use for non-commercial purposes.
Like I said, I don't usually use that program for music, it just came with my new computer and I thought I'd check it out.
