Question about shadows, images and sorting order

  1. I'm having a bit of an issue with the general concept of using photoshop to create overlay layers for light/shadow.

First off, is RPG Maker MV's implementation of the "multiply" blend mode, well, unusual? I have an image in photoshop with a multiply layer over the top, but when I display this layer as a picture in MV with the multiply mode, it looks very different. Does MV crush the alpha or something?

Secondly, I'm having an awkward problem:

    I have these pictures/layers...

    • MV's ground, i.e. the tile sprites
    • "Lower Shadow" which defines the base colour/shadows for the scene
    • "Lower Light" which is a very textured light layer to represent bright areas
    • (the character layer goes here in MV)
    • "Upper shadow" which is a thin shadow layer that exists mainly to cast shadow on characters & events
    • "Upper light" which is similar to upper shadow, but for bright stuff - it casts some light near bright things mainly for characters

    The result looks like this:

The problem, which you can probably see, is that the upper part of the lamp-post (and other areas like this) in the scene aren't shadowed correctly. This is because they're on a "higher" layer, because characters can walk behind the tops of lamp-posts in-game.

The only solution to this I can so far think of would be to go through and manually paint the insides of the upper lamp-posts with darkness to cover this up. However, while that's viable for this image, some of my locations have a large number of objects that would require this treatment.

I'm probably asking too much here, but is it possible to set an overlay layer, in any plugin, to be "on top of the character layer AND only affecting the character layer and top layer"?
