Very disappointed with some of the fake skills in the contest and the bad frankensprites. Those guys are definitely going to have a hard time with some of the later challenges in Pixel Madness.
Trust me, I was there during RMVX.net's PM. Some of the stuff people did there was pretty impressive. -
For the curious, I made sprite P. And I can make my own sprites. I didn't want it to win or expect it to win. There's not enough entries and I wanted the contest to start. If I did manage to win, I was going to be serious and submit purely original pieces.
This is a design contest and I understand what you guys feel. And stating sources would probably been a good idea for the Frankenstein'd entries. I am disappointed considering the last contest in VX.net had frankens and people still enjoyed it for what it is. -
Contest on hold until the staff decide what to do with it.
-
No you didn't. Somebody else did, and you just changed the colors. For the curious, I made sprite P.
-
I suggest that you look over the original again.
-
:( Wow, well this whole thing put a damper on my day... I hope everything gets resolved soon.
-
oops!

Well with 4 you can MOONWALK ! BD8? what happened to 2? pointless anecdote from hypothetical childhood goes here.
I actually remember making adventure games where the player could face 4-directions and had no animation step between. I gave the guys long dresses to remove the stillness of no leg movement, best way to handle it I thought at the time. :p -
So because a few people were being buttmunchers, the contest is on hold? That stinks. Hope this gets resolved quickly and we can have a fun contest.

dw817 please refrain from posting images like that. They are still counted as rips.

I mean for all the commotion that came up about the pixel madness and all, I do agree that pixel contests should all be done custom. No frankensprites, and that emphasized in the rules.
If the pixel madness contest is to be revived I would auto-disqualify the frankensprites and then continue on (even if you have to change the voting/judging system) without them. It'd be a waste to let peoples work drop off just due to that. But for future pixel contests it should be all their own work. Personally I'd shy away from even using a base for it and instead go by a theme or idea. I think that part of the point of a pixel contest is to try different things that you may not have a chance to do if you're just doing it for your game or something for example. I would emphasize the learning part over the winning/losing part. Feedback would be good to have too.
Oh or the other thing, simply renaming it to Sprite Madness and allowing frankensprites explicitely could have had it focus more on the design/new resources part I GUESS, I think part of the issue was the naming of the contest and the expectations. Kinda late for that this time though! -
I don't think you're wrong and I was against the idea of having vx(ace) base in the first place. Until I was told about the specifics of the previous contest.
I was under the impression that Pixel Madness was less of a pixel contest and more of something for fun. And at the same time having usable resources. That's why it's designed based and why there's a base in the first place. I guess if it was "Sprite Madness" it would've been less misleading. Then again VX did have that Pixel art is awesome trailer even when the tiles are painted. It could've been a joke from that. -
Hey guys, you can totally still run the contest if you just change every last thing about it! The reason Pixel Madness exists is because its the only skill I could think of that could run within the format, and the format is really fun. Keep in mind this is the second time this contest was run, and the first time it ran smoothly with no issues and produced quite a few really awesome sprites.I mean for all the commotion that came up about the pixel madness and all, I do agree that pixel contests should all be done custom. No frankensprites, and that emphasized in the rules.

Also, the base issue is because of two issues: 1. It helps maintain the voting blind. If someone was using another style base, it could easily give away who they are, 2. I want the sprites to be USEABLE after its over. We are the official RM site, one of the great things about this contest before was it created a large volume of sprites in a style that was ALREADY useable. I love custom sprites in other styles. But find me a style that has a working base (villagers, boring people sprites, etc. etc.) to work with so that they can actually be used IN A GAME, and I'll be happy, because every custom base style I see going around goes "Hey guys check out my new base and the 2 sprites in that style" and then dies, and no one ever wants to bother with the "boring" sprites that are necessary to actually use them.
I'm not running a pixel contest again. Its not worth it. There aren't enough people who can custom from scratch who would even bother entering a contest. Keep in mind that out of all those great pixel artists who are complaining about how awful this contest is, only 1 actually entered. You find me 16 pixel artists who can all do great scratch work AND will bother committing to a contest, and I'll bother. Outside of that, I'm not bothering running something like this again.
I'm still on the fence about whether I want to even salvage what we have now. -
I think that's fair. An officially sanctioned contest has to have more clarifications anyway.
-
Just wait until you guys unveil themes for sprites, then things will get real and the frankenspriting issue will be long gone.
-
there's a reason that there aren't enough people who create original sprites. the community as a whole should encourage more original works, and encourage people to learn to create original works. it's something i've been saying for many years—our rpg maker world is way too focused around one graphical style, for an engine that has no such limitations. for every thread with original resources, there are literally hundreds that show off frankensprites and recolors. the problem is in the mindset of the community at large.

Oof ... (hands in air) I didn't do it ! I didn't rip this. [Link]dw817 please refrain from posting images like that. They are still counted as rips.

And isn't there a sprite-maker already in RMVXA ? Perhaps the contest could be for the best additions to the database used here so it works directly into the RM system itself benefiting all Worldbuilders ? -
Thats because the style is useable. Show me one style from anyone else, yourself included that has a useable base number of sprites.there's a reason that there aren't enough people who create original sprites. the community as a whole should encourage more original works, and encourage people to learn to create original works. it's something i've been saying for many years—our rpg maker world is way too focused around one graphical style, for an engine that has no such limitations. for every thread with original resources, there are literally hundreds that show off frankensprites and recolors. the problem is in the mindset of the community at large.

that's my point exactly. stop thinking that way. we should encourage everybody to create their own, for their own games.Thats because the style is useable. Show me one style from anyone else, yourself included that has a useable base number of sprites.
