Photoshop/GIMP question

    How do I do this really simple image edit?

    There are probably dozens of ways to get that, and professional artist might know faster or better way - but I would simply import that picture as a new layer above a white background, and then use an eraser tool with a diffuse pattern to erase some of that picture to allow the white background to become visible.

    Or, if you are using GIMP there are light effects that you can put above your image.

    on GIMP 2.6 and 2.8 you have brushes which fade out towards the edge so you would only have to use that brush to gain those lighting effects.

    It depends as to why you want it to look like that. But anyway, assuming that all you want is an exact copy I'd draw the shapes in a new layer and just blur them (With Gaussian Blur) until you get the effect you want.

    Should be the fastest way, at least for me.
