Options not greyed out. Strange glitches all around.

  1. Hi everyone,

Ok I'm having a few strange glitches like: events that I edit will later return to a previous state, or sometimes after going from one map to another I get some passability issues where there should be none, fogs that don't dissapear even if I delete the event that calls them and similar.

Okay, I believe that something may be corrupted, but what... no idea, and how to fix it is algo beyond me. I however detected this:

The options on the left which should be greyed out, are actually not. Now I have a feeling (based on nothing) that is all related.

-If I create a new game, the options are back to normal, but after (let's say) an hour of constant work on the new game, they turn like this again.

-If I move a map or event from a game that is like this to a new game, it "corrupts" it immediately and makes all options appear in black again.

Probably there is something wrong with my PC (although no virus nor malware has been detected) but probably is something else... (?)

(I already deleted and reinstalled the Maker and the RTP and it's all the same).

    Anyone has any idea?

    Cheers!
  2. Are you using a steam version of Ace? It may be a cloud problem. Try making a new project locally, keep it from syncing online and see if that solves anything.
  3. Hi Seita,

Sorry I should have clarified, I'm not using Steam's version.

    Thanks for the answer though!

    Cheers.
  4. If that happens with the non-steam version, and you already reinstalled the editor, then either some background program is interfering with and damaging the editor, or some basic windows functions have been damaged or disabled.

Which Windows do you use, and how large is the window folder? (only approximately, how many hundreds MB or so)?
  5. Hmm

I'm using Windows 7 and the folder is 25.6 gb which to me seems a lot...
  6. no, it's not - I was considering a different problem that could happen with older windows versions, 7 should be OK from that point of view (doesn't say that there might not be other problems with your windows)
  7. I don't really understand the problem. I don't see ANY options that SHOULD be "greyed out".

Ace does not have fogs to start with. So you must be using a script. Depending on what script it is, erasing the event is not necessarily going to erase the fog. I suspect in this case, you are just expecting the script to do something that it's not meant to do.

Passability issues are more than likely due to your mapping or eventing - you've got the top left tile in the B tab set to O when it should be a star, or you've run a command to turn Player Through ON at some point, and have not turned it off.

With events you edit returning to a previous state - do you mean in the editor, or when you're playing the game? Events doing something you don't expect them to do is a common issue with people new to RPG Maker and is due to the way the events are designed. If you mean you actually change the event in the editor and save them then come back to the same map later and they're different ... I would ask if you actually close the editor between changing/saving it and looking at it again - in that case could you have several versions of your game, and you're just opening a different version? That happens (especially with the Steam version, but maybe also with the non-Steam version, depending on how you open the project).

I don't think your issues are related at all - I think you have several different issues, and most are either script or event related. Where did you download Ace from?
  8. Hey there,

Probably is my lack of proper english skills (I learnt with movies and cereal boxes), so I'll try to explain myself better:

2: Yes, I'm using Woratana's (uber) fogs. But the fogs are not the actual problem, they were just an example. What I meant is that when I enter a map that previously worked in a way because I created an event that made it work in such way and then I delete such event and try again to test it, the map still behaves as the event calling whatever it was still exists, then I feel a bit uneasy and start thinking of conspiracies... such as there is something wrong with the maker (or my pc for that matter).

    3. Yes I understand that passability most common problem is what-is-that-star-thing!? in the editor, I should know, I had problems with it for like six months or something,.the problem is that I'm walking on a specific tile and all of the sudden I can't go through it anymore, there was no tile change, and I can go back of course, but there is an invisible wall that won't let me go further. I did check for events that may have been blocking my path but none was to be found..

    4. I also understand this, I'm a graphic designer which means I save in a compulsive unhealthy way, I also make back ups every hour (no kidding) for the data and graphcis folder, which indeed means I have several folders with the game in it, however I also only open from the folder that my game is exactly in order to avoid this. And no, I didn't close it anyway from creating to testing.

    5. I downloaded my amazing Ace copy from the official page last year. (Edit: And only having these problems now by the way, forgot to mention).

Ok, to wrap things up: After saving the project, I always choose New Game to test whatever I'm doing (I see this being a common problem around for which I wanted to mention it) so if it's not an event on the current map or a script calling it 100% of the time, it should not happen and sometimes it still happens (like with the fogs and as you may know, woratana fogs have to be called with an event). I test locally (so to speak) which means I test map by map - region by region, etc. And always make sure of which tileset I',m using and double and triple check its passability properties when I find a problem (I find them al the time), there was none this time - Actually I fixed this one creating a new map and copy-pasting everything from one map to the other and magic! - and well, I just guess this time those hoofbeats are indeed zebras (or a ninja horse or Sleipnir, please let it be Slepinir).

    Thanks for your answer!
    Cheers!
  9. No matter what else, you have a problem in the editor itself - Shaz probably didn't compare your first screenshot with how it should look like.

When you reinstalled it, did you use the old download or did you redownload it before installing? Try redownloading if you haven't, perhaps your old download file was damaged.
  10. @Andar,

I didn't think of downloading a new copy, I just did and sadly didn't work. I may then guess it has something to do with my PC... any thoughts are more than welcome.

    Thanks!

    Best!
  11. I've had a few weird problems (like a directional button always being detected as being pressed) in both XP and VX Ace, but they have always somehow resolved themselves over time, and I've never seen something like this that messes up the standard look of events.

All of this is guesswork, but if there's anything you haven't tried, go ahead and try it and see if it works.

    1. I assume you've already tried rebooting your computer.  If not, do so.
    2. I also assume you've disabled any scripts you're using (Ctrl + A, then Ctrl + Q for each script), then restarted RPG Maker.  If not, do so.
    3. Have you tried opening the project that has RPG Maker (particularly a newly-downloaded trial version) installed on another computer and seeing what happens?  This will be a good indication as to whether something in the project itself or its associated files is corrupt.  I think it's more likely that it will work fine on another computer, which means something's wrong with either your local session or your RPG Maker program.
    4. (Only if #3 did NOT work OK on another computer) If it didn't work OK on another computer, it's probably something in the project itself that's corrupt.  Close down RPG Maker, then open up a new project and make sure you don't see the same bugs happening.  Assuming they don't happen, open up your other project file and start copying stuff over into the clean one, one "element" at a time - for example, copy all the Armors in the database at once, or copy one entire Map, but don't copy anything else until you save, do a Test Play, shut down both files and the RPG Maker program, re-open it, and confirm that it's still not happening.  Then copy one more element and do the same.  Hopefully this will allow you to copy everything over without any problems.  And if it doesn't, at least this should reveal which element is causing this strange bug.
    5. (Only if #3 DID work OK on another computer) Have you tried clearing the Registry after you uninstall?  (Make sure to save your entire project to an external device like a flash drive, or to something like Dropbox, before you do so!)  Uninstall, then, in the "run" Windows command, type "regedit" and press enter/OK.  Click on the top level of the file tree and do a Find (Ctrl + F) for something like "RPG Maker".  You'll need to do this a lot of times since there will be a ton of different registry entries.  I think you're gonna want to be looking for things under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.  Simply delete all of these entries that you can find, try the project again (might not work at all), THEN reinstall RPG Maker and try again.  I'm not an expert with the Registry Editor so maybe someone can give you more guidance with this step before you start.
  12. Hi Wavelength,

    1. Yes, several times.

    2. Yes, I tested it with a new project, and as I said in my original post, after a while of working on a new project (no scripts at all) it happens again.

    3. This is an amazing idea and I haven't done it, I guess I can get another computer by tomorrow so will do and post the results.

4 .I did this thinking it was the project itself what was corrupted and after copying one single map it corrupts the new project entirely.

    5. I'll do this tomorrow after the test with another computer.

And thanks! Will post tomorrow to see if any of that worked.

    Best!
  13. The problems appear to be with the editor AND with playing a game. In your game, when you delete the event and replay, are you continuing a saved game or are you starting a new game? Do you leave the map and return? The map you're on doesn't reload when you load a saved game, so it could well be using the last version of the map from the save file. I think ... I don't have Ace on this computer so I can't double check that.
  14. Hi Shaz,

As I said on my answer to you, I always select "New Game" when testing stuff (I actually never make "saves" when testing, I see no point in them). So yeah don't think that's it.

    But thanks :)

    Cheers.
  15. Sorry - I missed that bit.
  16. how much RAM do you have?
  17. 6gb.
  18. Sorry to Necropost, but this issue is causing a lot of anxiety.

I tried Wavelength's suggestion of clearing all registry entries connected to RMVXA after uninstalling the game. Once deleted, I reinstalled, and it seemed to fix the problem. Then today, it happened again. It usually seems to happen after jumping over to my photoshop and saving a png file into RMVXA. (I never use the import option). Could that be why? However, I've been using this method for nearly a year, then all of a sudden, I seem to be having this problem.

I don't know how to create DLL's, so I haven't messed with the language of the game. I also haven't tried deleting the corresponding registry files since it happened again today, but I did download CCleaner today, and it got rid of 2000 registry files - which I was told was substantial.

Not sure why this keeps happening, but it's stressing me out. It's not gamebreaking, just not working properly, and I didn't invest $90 ($70 RMVXA & $20 Effectus) for it not to work.

Please, please, please, can anyone help. So far, I've found no other information to help.
  19. The problem is that this bug happens too rarely for us to ever have identified the cause. That's why there is no other information.

So far all we can say is that it's an editor problem that has no effect on the game itself other than making the developer look twice to see if the correct event conditions are set.
