Old Free-to-Use Doodadable Images

  1. I've been digging up obscure game-ready assets with proper author permissions. I'm gonna post ones I think will be universally useful here so other people don't need to dig through 20-year-old image archives. Mostly I'm focusing on things that would be useful as doodads, since I personally love having a lot of map clutter.

The first one I am posting is the

Hide Ito Icon Pack (free to use, credit not required, noncommercial only - if you do credit, credit "Hideki Ito"). He didn't put any limits on editing them in our conversation.

Ito was the #1 artist in the mac icon community back when it was thriving. Dude made tons and tons of really neat art, and won a ton of contests. I talked with him, and he agreed to let me upload a compilation of his art on this forum for anyone to use in (noncommercial) games.

This package has over a thousand individual pieces, all 32x32. A ton of these are perfect as item icons, and depending on scale a lot of them would make for nice map doodads too. These were released in batches of multi-icon sets over the course of a couple years. I've excluded a few icons that are tied to a company's IP (so sadly the 25 furbies aren't making the cut), and stuff that was just like, icons pictures of normal computer folders.

This is a zip file, split into loosely-themed folders, with every individual image as a separate png or gif. Most of the images have descriptive filenames, all filenames should be unique (due to a quirk of converting files from old mac filesystems to modern ones, some of the descriptive filenames were lost).

Generally, these are all modern, everyday recognizable items. Some examples:
    Bell: Fi1sdUZ.png
    Cauliflower: T6Y1tMJ.gif
    Gas can: gTuOhaq.gif
    Cowboy hat: AW7LARG.png
    Nail clippers: glCRhQW.png
    A house*: xiNjVri.png
There's over 300 different food sprites alone.

I'm going to update sporadically whenever I turn up anything else neat. If you come up with a good weird source of free-to-use doodadable stuff I won't mind if you posted a link to it here and made this into a doodad warehouse.

*More on these later. Because of the Icontown project there were a lot of artists doing buildings in this style, size, and perspective, and I might be able to get permission from enough of them to have a whole isometric city.
  2. Any license or ways to use them in commercial project?
  3. Thanks for sharing, @Restart. It was also nice to learn a bit about the history of the Mac community. :)
  4. I want to give this thread a push, because I think the title is a bit misleading with the pictures all broken it is really difficult to know what treasure lies in the download link.

So, let me drop a "little" promotional text and some examples here ;D

MV and MZ both use 32x32 icons, but that size is not really unique, there are a lot of different places where those sizes are used - and in fact, I remember seeing those exact icons on random “customize your desktop with those pretty icons” sites in the past and loved them - but that was when XP was around and the default Maker icon size was a different one.

Somehow I forgot about them, but Restart did not and reached out to him, with the great news that we may use them in any of our non-commercial Maker projects!

So, that was a lot of talking, let us see what he got for us!
After downloading the single zip file you can see some subfolders that are pretty self-explanatory:

As the titles already suggest, the icons themselves are generally modern themed and more everyday life oriented.
And if your game falls in that category, they are simply a must have!
Some examples of things you can do with those:
Do you want to have a fun cookie baking minigame for christmas?

With virtually everything to realize that, Hide has your back! With everything from whisk over a measuring cup to resulting cookies, there is everything you need to implement one!

And even of your game is not all modern, especially the food items will work in most games that are made with RM:

Since there are both ingredients, kitchen utensils and resulting dishes in here, this pack is a giant invitation to make the cooking system you always wanted to have become a real thing!

In the end it is always up to you how you want to put them to use!

The halloween set can be anything from fun props in a modern game involving a halloween party to perfect items for your necromancer’s skills and equipment! Whether the bat is a real bat, a toy or the symbol for a blood sucking spell, who knows? And the black cat is just perfect for any type of scare status or action that causes one!

All the small everyday items make making a puzzle focused game so tempting… use the clip to pick a lock or use the eraser on the paper on the clipboard to find out which letters are not written with a pencil and see what the secret message is…
The items were not made with a game in mind, but that on the other hand lets you brainstorm out of the box and you might come up with things you did not think about before!

The things shown here are just a handful of examples, the folder has many more things to offer and is probably one of the most inspiring things when it comes to implementing cool systems or combination mechanics!
