Hello everyone! I am very new to RPG Maker, and by very new, I mean I haven't even downloaded it yet and have been watching basic youtube tutorials lol
This program looks like a ton of fun and I've always wanted to make a game since I was a kid. I do have a few questions if you wouldn't mind helping me...
1) I am not sure which version to download. From my understanding, ACE is the most recent/updated version but there are slight variations from that and XP. Which would you recommend I use?
2) I just bought a new laptop today and it uses Windows 8. Does RPG Maker work with W8? I'm still getting used to all the features haha.
3) I NEED this computer for college so is there any chance that these programs or downloads would cause a crash?
4) Are you able to import/download more enemies into the game? I don't mean create my own sprites, I mean is there place on this site where there are more things you can download into the game?
5) Are you able to rename things? Suppose there's a spell in the game that comes with RPG MAKER. Can i just name the spell something else or maybe create my own? I have no experience in codding and am hoping doing things like this isn't too technical.
I realize I asked a lot of questions but I would really like to know some things before I dive in. Also, I didn't place these questions anywhere else because I didn't know where they would belong since i did not know yet which version I would be using.
Thanks for any help you can give me! I'm really looking forward to making my own game and playing some of yours!

Hello, welcome to the community :)
1. For simplicity, Ace is much better, while XP gives more control on certain aspects, predominantly the mapping, and it is older so there are more scripts and games with it. I'd recommend you Ace, specially since you're new on this.
2. Yep, other people and I have used it without problems, as I am using it right now on the Steam edition (which is slightly more updated, and more versatility in terms of moving to other computers, but have it's cons too, like the cloud feature it have can slow you down, and you can't open the Ace editor files directly), so the Non-Steam one shouldn't also.
3. No, it works fine offline :)
4. Yes, and this site have tons of resources, which includes battlers, and also scripts, music, tilesets, etc.
5. Yep, it is in the database, in the "Skills" tab, and it doesn't require any technical level, that's a good pro of RPG Maker series, although there is a learning curve, but much lower than other programs with coding and stuff.
No problem :) , it's good if you ask, many members are friendly here and are willing to help :) , there are also category specifically for helping in certain aspects :) -
Welcome to the group!
It seems M_Michael has already basically answered all your stated questions. -
Hi and welcome (I'll post here instead of reply to your PM).
If you need help with the engine, you can view the manual with F1, or search through the forum with some well-chosen keywords. If you can't find what you're looking for, please post your question (one separate question/theme per thread) in the VX Ace Support forum. This area is only for intros, not for getting help developing a game :)
Lots to learn, take your time :) -
Welcome to RPGmakerweb! I think you will find that not only is RPG Maker VERY capable of allowing one to live out their childhood dream of creating their own game (and thus, a world)... but also that this community is teaming with some very amazing and talented invdividuals!
Congrats on joining, and I hope you have fun! :) -
Welcome!
1. I recommend Ace, because it's the newer RPG maker engine. You can either purchase it on Steam, as a direct download or a boxed copy. I use the Steam copy.
2. I don't have Windows 8 so I can't answer this one.
3. I don't think it would cause a crash. RPG Maker runs as a standalone program.
4. Absolutely! There are a ton of free resources for RPG Maker (Thalzon makes a lot of excellent, free, battlers), and if/when you have some cash, there are a lot of resource packs you can purchase. You can also get more music, sound effects, even tilesets which make completely different RPG types than the classic fantasy.
5. Easily. Just about every skill can be removed (except the "Death" skill which can be renamed but not removed) and you can easily create a ton of custom Skills/Spells. You can create as many unique Classes as you like and can control how their abilities grow over levels, how much XP to advance to each level and so on.
Pretty much any aspect of an RPG you can make a custom one in RPG Maker. And that's before you get into the literally thousands of scripts which themselves can further modify aspects of your game --- from custom combat windows, to in-game Time, Weather. And, if you are or become proficient in Ruby, you can make your own scripts, but none of that is required to make a full game. -
Welcome to the community!
I think Michael and whitesphere have answered most of your questions (can't think of any to add on to what they've already said).
Hope you enjoy yourself over here! ^^ -
Thanks for the warm welcomes! I'm glad to see the community here is very helpful and seems very pleasant. I don't have too much time to be posting from work and school but I'll be on when i can.
:) See you on the boards! -
Better late than never, welcome buddy!
