Hello everyone!
I was sratching my head over something that is purely visual, yet important for the enjoyment of the gameplay. I have a full 24 classes system for multiple ways of playing the same characters, since my entire game resolves around my party, I thought said party would be more fun with jobs and classes.
I've come at a decision to make if I am to go for either costumes per class for each characters to wear, or if I should keep it on one clothing to make up for it with more expression of the character on how they act with poses and stuff. I cannot go for both so I wanted opinions.
So basically:
1- Class-specific costumes. For example, if the character had the mage class, it would wear a magic robe on the screen. If it goes for for a Knight, it would change the costume to an armor
2- There's only one costume per character, which allows me to put more expression in them, only with more limited clothings.
What do you think?
Need opinion for classes costumes

A character that wear robes, can only pick classes like cleric, sorcerer, warlock. I'm okay with one costume per character
A character that wear robes, can pick classes between magic related class to completely different class like berserker, definitely need a new costume. -
How much does the storyline of you game rely on the character's emotions? If the story is going to take a significant hit by not being able to properly tell it, I'd say ditch the costumes. If the characters and story aren't really the focus of the game then putting more detail in the costumes would probably be a better investment.

I would base your decision on what the character's attributes are. Say, if character A has a strong leaning towards higher attacks make classes and costumes to fit that and go from there. May make things easier. Just my two pennies...

I'm making one where every characters has access to every classes, but there is also a system of profeciency

Which RPG Maker are you using? I find that MV's chibi style leaves so little space for the body it's quite hard to tell you're wearing something different unless you go Final Fantasy's crazy hat route (check out FF5's original pixel sprites). Personally I think expressions and maybe busts would be a better investment.

I got to have better sprites using the SV Battlers and makign them portraits. Here's an example:

I would base it on which graphics we will be seeing more, your character sprite or your character's expressions and poses. Personally I prefer the class costumes especially when some of the features of a class kind of relies on its appearance (like a knight that has high defense wouldn't make sense if he's actually wearing a robe)

'General Discussion' is not for feedback on individual games. That belongs in either 'Ideas and Prototypes' or 'Games in Development', depending on how far into the development process you are. Nor is it to discuss which assets you should use. It is for looking at broad themes as they affect the making of games.
